Abundance patterns in early-type galaxies: is there a 'knee' in the [Fe/H] vs. [alpha/Fe] relation?
Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are known to be enhanced in alpha elements, in
accordance with their old ages and short formation timescales. In this
contribution we aim to resolve the enrichment histories of ETGs. This means we
study the abundance of Fe ([Fe/H]) and the alpha-element groups ([alpha/Fe])
separately for stars older than 9.5 Gyr ([Fe/H]o, [alpha/Fe]o) and for stars
between 1.5 and 9.5 Gyr ([Fe/H]i, [alpha/Fe]i). Through extensive simulation we
show that we can indeed recover the enrichment history per galaxy. We then
analyze a spectroscopic sample of 2286 early-type galaxies from the SDSS
selected to be ETGs. We separate out those galaxies for which the abundance of
iron in stars grows throughout the lifetime of the galaxy, i.e. in which
[Fe/H]o < [Fe/H]i. We confirm earlier work where the [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe]
parameters are correlated with the mass and velocity dispersion of ETGs. We
emphasize that the strongest relation is between [alpha/Fe] and age. This
relation falls into two regimes, one with a steep slope for old galaxies and
one with a shallow slope for younger ETGs. The vast majority of ETGs in our
sample do not show the 'knee' in the plot of [Fe/H] vs. [alpha/Fe] commonly
observed in local group galaxies. This implies that for the vast majority of
ETGs, the stars younger than 9.5 Gyrs are likely to have been accreted or
formed from accreted gas. The properties of the intermediate-age stars in
accretion-dominated ETGs indicate that mass growth through late (minor) mergers
in ETGs is dominated by galaxies with low [Fe/H] and low [alpha/Fe]. The method
of reconstructing the stellar enrichment histories of ETGs introduced in this
paper promises to constrain the star formation and mass assembly histories of
large samples of galaxies in a unique way.Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication by A&
Full spectral fitting of Milky Way and M31 globular clusters: ages and metallicities
Context: The formation and evolution of disk galaxies are long standing
questions in Astronomy. Understanding the properties of globular cluster
systems can lead to important insights on the evolution of its host galaxy.
Aims: We aim to obtain the stellar population parameters - age and metallicity
- of a sample of M31 and Galactic globular clusters. Studying their globular
cluster systems is an important step towards understanding their formation and
evolution in a complete way. Methods: Our analysis employs a modern
pixel-to-pixel spectral fitting technique to fit observed integrated spectra to
updated stellar population models. By comparing observations to models we
obtain the ages and metallicities of their stellar populations. We apply this
technique to a sample of 38 globular clusters in M31 and to 41 Galactic
globular clusters, used as a control sample. Results: Our sample of M31
globular clusters spans ages from 150 Myr to the age of the Universe.
Metallicities [Fe/H] range from -2.2 dex to the solar value. The
age-metallicity relation obtained can be described as having two components: an
old population with a flat age-[Fe/H] relation, possibly associated with the
halo and/or bulge, and a second one with a roughly linear relation between age
and metallicity, higher metallicities corresponding to younger ages, possibly
associated with the M31 disk. While we recover the very well known Galactic GC
metallicity bimodality, our own analysis of M31's metallicity distribution
function (MDF) suggests that both GC systems cover basically the same [Fe/H]
range yet M31's MDF is not clearly bimodal. These results suggest that both
galaxies experienced different star formation and accretion histories.Comment: A&A, in pres
Corino de Andrade disease: mechanisms and impact on reproduction
Familial amyloid polyneuropathy was first described by Corino de Andrade in 1952 in Northern Portugal. It is a fatal autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a progression of neurologic symptoms, beginning early in the reproductive life. The Transthyretin gene mutation originates a mutated protein that precipitates in the connective tissue as amyloid deposits. This disease is presently named Transthyretin-related hereditary amyloidosis. We performed an extensive review on this disease based on searches in Medical databases and in paper references. In this review, we briefly summarize the epidemiology and the mechanisms involved on amyloid deposition; we detailed how to evaluate the mechanisms implicated on the development of the major signs and symptoms associated with reproductive dysfunction; and we discuss the mechanisms involved in secondary sexual dysfunction after psychological treatments. Treatment of the disease is directed towards relieving specific symptoms in association with liver transplant, and molecular and genetic therapeutics. Although the current clinical trials indicate symptoms relief, no data on the reproductive function was reported. Thus, preimplantation genetic diagnosis is presently the only available technique that eradicates the disease as it avoids the birth of new patients.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The Role of in Two-pion Exchange Three-nucleon Potential
In this paper we have studied the two-pion exchange three-nucleon potential
using an approximate chiral symmetry of the
strong interaction. The off-shell pion-nucleon scattering amplitudes obtained
from the Weinberg Lagangian are supplemented with contributions from the
well-known -term and the exchange. It is the role of the
-resonance in , which we have investigated in detail in the
framework of the Lagrangian field theory. The -contribution is quite
appreciable and, more significantly, it is dependent on a parameter Z which is
arbitrary but has the empirical bounds . We find that the
-contribution to the important parameters of the depends
on the choice of a value for Z, although the correction to the binding energy
of triton is not expected to be very sensitive to the variation of Z within its
bounds.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe
Neurodevelopmental Outcome Predictors of Term Newborns With Neonatal Seizures
Introduction: The concrete burden of neonatal seizures in neurodevelopmental outcome of term newborns is still unknown in literature. The aim of this study was to describe prognostic predictors in neonatal seizures.
Subjects and methods: Observational prospective study of term neonates with clinical seizures from a tertiary center (2009-2018). Adverse outcome was determined as death, global developmental delay, cerebral palsy or epilepsy. Perinatal characteristics, etiology, electrographic features, neuroimaging and antiepileptic treatment were analyzed in a logistic regression model.
Results: A total of 102 newborns were included (52 infants with normal outcome). Twelve fatalities were registered. In the survival group, 38 children had an adverse outcome (28 global developmental delay, 27 cerebral palsy, 21 epilepsy). From the prognostic variables identified in univariate analysis, perinatal complications, seizure onset in the first day of life, moderate to severe abnormal background activity, abnormal amplitude-integrated EEG pattern, and treatment response remained independently associated with adverse outcome after a logistic regression model.
Conclusions: There is conflicting data about surrogate markers in neonatal seizures. Aside from confirming the predictive value of previously described variables, we observed that amplitude-integrated EEG monitoring is a forthcoming prognostic tool. Future approaches may include a wider use of amplitude-integrated EEG monitoring, being crucial for timely seizure identification and prompt treatment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Coulomb and quantum oscillator problems in conical spaces with arbitrary dimensions
The Schr\"odinger equations for the Coulomb and the Harmonic oscillator
potentials are solved in the cosmic-string conical space-time. The spherical
harmonics with angular deficit are introduced.
The algebraic construction of the harmonic oscillator eigenfunctions is
performed through the introduction of non-local ladder operators. By exploiting
the hidden symmetry of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator the eigenvalues
for the angular momentum operators in three dimensions are reproduced.
A generalization for N-dimensions is performed for both Coulomb and harmonic
oscillator problems in angular deficit space-times.
It is thus established the connection among the states and energies of both
problems in these topologically non-trivial space-times.Comment: 15 page

PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study based on evaluation of data from Serviço de Cirurgia, Neurologia and Consult de Neurology processes, between 1990-2003, of 15 patients submitted to total thymectomy.
RESULTS: 15 patients, aged 17 to 72, 11 female and 4 male. Miastenia Gravis was the main indication for surgery, for uncontrollable symptoms or suspicion of thymoma. In patients with myasthenia, surgery was accomplish after compensation of symptoms. There weren't post-surgery complications. Pathology were divided in thymic hyperplasia and thymoma. Miastenia patients have there symptoms diminished or stable with reduction or cessation of medical therapy.
CONCLUSIONS: Miastenia was the most frequent indication for thymectomy. Surgery was good results, with low morbimortality, as long as the protocols are respected
