Application of ERTS-1 imagery and underflight photography in the detection and monitoring of forest insect infestations in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California
The analysis of ERTS-1 imagery of areas in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California is discussed. The data is used to detect two types of insect infestational and to determine the extent of timber resources. Addition applications are the mapping of stream courses, mountain meadows, lakes, rock outcrops, and grazing land. The ERTS-1 data and underflight photography are used for this purpose

Status of ultratrace chemical analyses of materials for semiconductors was studied. This study covered atomic absorption spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, and activation analyses. It makes recommendations to improve sensitivity, reliability and versatility for ultratrace chemical analysis
Complex eigenvalues for the stability of Couette flow
The eigenvalue problem for the linear stability of Couette flow between rotating concentric cylinders to axisymmetric disturbances is considered. It is shown by numerical calculations and by formal perturbation methods that when the outer cylinder is at rest there exist complex eigenvalues corresponding to oscillatory damped disturbances. The structure of the first few eigenvalues in the spectrum is discussed. The results do not contradict the principle of exchange of stabilities, namely, for a fixed axial wavenumber the first mode to become unstable as the speed of the inner cylinder is increased is nonoscillatory as the stability boundary is crossed
Status of coral reefs of Little Cayman, Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, British West Indies in 1999 and 2000. (Part 1: Stony corals and algae)
A benthic assessment of the isolated Cayman Islands was completed at 42 sites. Major changes in the reef community structure were documented by comparison with earlier studies. Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis, once abundant as shallow framework builders, were uncommon. Diseased stony corals were seen in \u3e90% of the study sites, with the highest averages in Little Cayman, especially at Bloody Bay which is one of the most highly regulated marine parks in the Cayman Islands. The Montastraea annularis species complex accounted for two-thirds of the diseased corals which, along with other massive species, were affected largely by white-plague disease. Recent partial-colony mortality was particularly high in Grand Cayman. However, small- to intermediate-sized (M. annularis complex) suggest a strong potential for population regeneration. Algal competition generally did not appear to be a problem for stony corals, and bleaching was insignificant, yet more prevalent, in the deeper (\u3e10 m) sites

Application of ERTS-1 imagery and underflight photography in the detection and monitoring of forest insect infections in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California
The author has identified the following significant results. Analysis of ERTS-1 imagery with underflight aerial photo support including U-2, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, indicates promising possibilities of detecting and monitoring forest insect outbreaks visually with some mechanical support utilizing the VP-8 image analyzer. Visually, it is possible at a scale of 1:1,000,000 to discriminate between large areas of damaged and undamaged forests; timbered and non-timbered areas; pasture land and cultivated fields; desert and riparian vegetation. At a scale of 1:80,000 it is possible to distinguish among three classes of tree mortality; defoliated and undefoliated areas; non-host mixed conifers; and mountain meadows, rock domes, lakes and glaciers. Machine tests showed significant differences in image densities among various bands and mortality areas
Lightweight thermally efficient composite feedlines, preliminary design and evaluation
Six liquid hydrogen feedline design concepts were developed for the cryogenic space tug. The feedlines include composite and all-metal vacuum jacketed and non-vacuum jacketed concepts, and incorporate the latest technology developments in the areas of thermally efficient vacuum jacket end closures and standoffs, radiation shields in the vacuum annulus, thermal coatings, and lightweight dissimilar metal flanged joints. The feedline design concepts were evaluated on the basis of thermal performance, weight, cost, reliability, and reusability. It is shown that composite tubing provides improved thermal performance and reduced weight for each design concept considered. Approximately 12 kg (26 lb.) can be saved by the use of composite tubing for the LH2 feedline and the other propulsion lines in the space tug
A new representation for non--local operators and path integrals
We derive an alternative representation for the relativistic non--local
kinetic energy operator and we apply it to solve the relativistic Salpeter
equation using the variational sinc collocation method. Our representation is
analytical and does not depend on an expansion in terms of local operators. We
have used the relativistic harmonic oscillator problem to test our formula and
we have found that arbitrarily precise results are obtained, simply increasing
the number of grid points. More difficult problems have also been considered,
observing in all cases the convergence of the numerical results. Using these
results we have also derived a new representation for the quantum mechanical
Green's function and for the corresponding path integral. We have tested this
representation for a free particle in a box, recovering the exact result after
taking the proper limits, and we have also found that the application of the
Feynman--Kac formula to our Green's function yields the correct ground state
energy. Our path integral representation allows to treat hamiltonians
containing non--local operators and it could provide to the community a new

Asymptotic iteration method for eigenvalue problems
An asymptotic interation method for solving second-order homogeneous linear
differential equations of the form y'' = lambda(x) y' + s(x) y is introduced,
where lambda(x) \neq 0 and s(x) are C-infinity functions. Applications to
Schroedinger type problems, including some with highly singular potentials, are

Coherent states and the quantization of 1+1-dimensional Yang-Mills theory
This paper discusses the canonical quantization of 1+1-dimensional Yang-Mills
theory on a spacetime cylinder, from the point of view of coherent states, or
equivalently, the Segal-Bargmann transform. Before gauge symmetry is imposed,
the coherent states are simply ordinary coherent states labeled by points in an
infinite-dimensional linear phase space. Gauge symmetry is imposed by
projecting the original coherent states onto the gauge-invariant subspace,
using a suitable regularization procedure. We obtain in this way a new family
of "reduced" coherent states labeled by points in the reduced phase space,
which in this case is simply the cotangent bundle of the structure group K.
The main result explained here, obtained originally in a joint work of the
author with B. Driver, is this: The reduced coherent states are precisely those
associated to the generalized Segal-Bargmann transform for K, as introduced by
the author from a different point of view. This result agrees with that of K.
Wren, who uses a different method of implementing the gauge symmetry. The
coherent states also provide a rigorous way of making sense out of the quantum
Hamiltonian for the unreduced system.
Various related issues are discussed, including the complex structure on the
reduced phase space and the question of whether quantization commutes with
reduction
