    Formate as a key intermediate in CO<sub>2</sub> utilization

    Replacing fossil feedstocks for chemicals and polymers in the chemical industry is a key step towards a future circular society. Making use of CO2 as a starting material in Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) or Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) processes presents a great opportunity. Unfortunately, converting CO2 is not easy - due to its stability and inherently low reactivity either high energy inputs or nifty catalytic systems are required for its conversion. An electrochemical cell using a gas-diffusion electrode to convert CO2 into formate is such a promising system. But making formate alone does not allow us to substitute many fossil carbon-fed processes. Oxalic acid on the other hand is a potential new platform chemical for material production as useful monomers such as glycolic acid can be derived from it. Fortunately, formate can be converted into oxalate (and subsequently oxalic acid) by coupling two formates in a formate to oxalate coupling reaction (FOCR). The FOCR is a reaction that has been studied for more than 175 years and has seen widespread industrial use in the past. In this work, we critically discuss the history of the FOCR, present the most recent advances and draw a perspective for its future. We provide an overview of all (side)products obtained in FOCR and examine the various reaction parameters and their ability to influence the reaction. To understand the reaction better and improve it in the future, we critically discuss the many mechanisms proposed for the various catalytic systems in the FOCR. At last, we explore the potential to introduce new catalytic and solvent systems or co-reactants to the FOCR to improve reaction performance and broaden the range of products from CO2 derived formate

    COVID-19 pandemic broke out when the travel and tourism industry was at its peak. There was a trend among the new generation spending more time and money on recreational activities as stress relievers. Travel and Tourism were prominent activities in this regard. The spread of the pandemic was so fast and gripping that the country itself got into complete lockdown and consequent shocks in every aspect of the economy. The study attempted to analyze the changes that occurred in the travel and tourism industry as a result of the pandemic. The study made use of statistical tools such as five-point Likert scale analysis, Wilcoxon Test, Chi-Square Test to analyze the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the Travel and Tourism industry in Kerala.The study inferred from the analysis that lockdowns due to the Covid pandemic had significant and enduring negative impacts on the business prospects of stakeholders in the travel and tourism industry

    Enhancing CO2 plasma conversion using metal grid catalysts

    The synergy between catalysis and plasma chemistry often enhances the yield of chemical reactions in plasma-driven reactors. In the case of CO2 splitting into CO and O2, no positive synergistic effect was observed in earlier studies with plasma reactors, except for dielectric barrier discharges, that do not have a high yield and a high efficiency. Here, we demonstrate that introducing metal meshes into radio frequency-driven plasma reactors increases the relative reaction yield by 20%–50%, while supported metal oxide catalysts in the same setups have no effect. We attribute this to the double role of the metal mesh, which acts both as a catalyst for direct CO2 dissociation as well as for oxygen recombination.</p

    A Comparison of the Pitfall Trap, Winkler Extractor and Berlese Funnel for Sampling Ground-Dwelling Arthropods in Tropical Montane Cloud Forests

    Little is known about the ground-dwelling arthropod diversity in tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF). Due to unique habitat conditions in TMCFs with continuously wet substrates and a waterlogged forest floor along with the innate biases of the pitfall trap, Berlese funnel and Winkler extractor are certain to make it difficult to choose the most appropriate method to sample the ground-dwelling arthropods in TMCFs. Among the three methods, the Winkler extractor was the most efficient method for quantitative data and pitfall trapping for qualitative data for most groups. Inclusion of floatation method as a complementary method along with the Winkler extractor would enable a comprehensive quantitative survey of ground-dwelling arthropods. Pitfall trapping is essential for both quantitative and qualitative sampling of Diplopoda, Opiliones, Orthoptera, and Diptera. The Winkler extractor was the best quantitative method for Psocoptera, Araneae, Isopoda, and Formicidae; and the Berlese funnel was best for Collembola and Chilopoda. For larval forms of different insect orders and the Acari, all the three methods were equally effective

    Trait evaluation and trial cultivation of Dongfang No. 2, the hybrid of a male gametophyte clone of Laminaria longissima (Laminariales, Phaeophyta) and a female one of L. japonica

    Direct cultivation of the first filial generation of gametophyte clones from different Laminaria species is a highly effective way of utilizing kelp heterozygous vigor (heterosis). A male gametophyte clone of L. longissima Miyabe and a female one of L. japonica Areschoug were hybridized, generating Dongfang No. 2 hybrid kelp. This hybrid kelp was used directly in trial cultivation, and its agronomical traits were evaluated. L. longissima and L. japonica are obviously different and complement each other in their morphological characteristics and ecological performances. The hybrid of their gametophyte clones, Dongfang No. 2, showed 56.8% heterozygous vigor in yield. It also showed increased yields of 41.0 and 76.4% compared to the widely used commercial kelps Variety 1 and Variety 2, respectively. In large-scale cultivation trials at different locations and in different years, Dongfang No. 2 attained significantly higher yields than Varieties 1 and 2, increasing yield by 26.4% on average over Variety 1 and by 65.0% over the other. Dongfang No. 2 has a robust holdfast and a wide, long and deep-brown uniform blade, which shows a distinct middle groove. In addition to yield, Dongfang No. 2 also demonstrates obvious heterozygous vigor in other agronomic traits. It is resistant to strong irradiance, as the two commercial varieties are, has an appropriate vegetative maturation time, and adapts well to a range of different culture conditions. The parentage analysis using AFLP of total DNA and SNP of the ITS region of ribosomal RNA transcription unit showed that Dongfang No. 2 is the real hybrid of L. japonica and L. longissima
