Michael S. Mahoney, 1939â2008
Perhaps the clearest testimony to the scholarly range and depth of Princeton's nowâlamented Michael S. Mahoney lies in the dismay of his colleagues in the last few years, as they contemplated his imminent retirement. How to maintain coverage of his fields? Fretting over this question, the program in history of science that he did so much to build recently found itself sketching a five-year plan that involved replacing him with no fewer than four new appointments: a historian of mathematics with the ability to handle the course on Greek antiquity, a historian of the core problems of the Scientific Revolution, a historian of technology who could cover the nineteenthâcentury United States and Britain, and, finally, a historian of the computer-and-media revolution. Chaos, containment and change: responding to persistent offending by young people
This article reviews policy developments in Scotland concerning 'persistent young offenders' and then describes the design of a study intended to assist a local planning group in developing its response. The key findings of a review of casefiles of young people involved in persistent offending are reported. It emerges that youth crime and young people involved in offending are more complex and heterogeneous than is sometimes assumed. This, along with a review of some literature about desistance from offending, reaffirms the need for properly individualised interventions. Studies of 'desisters' suggest the centrality of effective and engaging working relationships in this process. However, these studies also re-assert the significance of the social contexts of workersâ efforts to bring 'change' out of 'chaos'. We conclude therefore that the 'new correctionalism' must be tempered with appreciation of the social exclusion of young people who offend
'Keeping busy' as agency in early desistance
Agency in desistance research has often been understood as deliberate action
undertaken in pursuit of a desisting identity. Through a micro-longitudinal
approach, this research focuses on the early desistance experiences of a
number of mainly white British female participants. Agency was exhibited not
with a new identity in mind, but instead through 'keeping busy'. The surprising
lack of identity concerns may be due to the early stages of the participants'
desistance experiences, with new identities emerging later in the process.
Alternatively, it may indicate a fundamental difference to the classic desistance
narrative, linked to the differences between this sample and the frequently
researched, Western, male, high-frequency offender. Finally, important aspects
of the cultures surrounding desistance research may have shaped the
narratives of desisters and the biases of researchers towards finding a concern
for identity when this is not necessarily experienced in the everyday lives of
desisters
Characterisation of microvessel blood velocity and segment length in the brain using multi-diffusion-time diffusion-weighted MRI

At long diffusion-times, blood flow in capillaries is in the diffusive regime, and signal attenuation is dependent on blood velocity (v) and capillary segment length (l). It is described by the pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*=vl/6) of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM). At shorter diffusion-times, blood flow is in the ballistic regime, and signal attenuation depends on v, and not l. In theory, l could be estimated using D* and v. In this study, we compare the accuracy and repeatability of three approaches to estimating v, and therefore l: the IVIM ballistic model, the velocity autocorrelation model, and the ballistic approximation to the velocity autocorrelation model. Twenty-nine rat datasets from two strains were acquired at 7 T, with b-values between 0 and 1000 smmâ2 and diffusion times between 11.6 and 50 ms. Five rats were scanned twice to assess scan-rescan repeatability. Measurements of l were validated using corrosion casting and micro-CT imaging. The ballistic approximation of the velocity autocorrelation model had lowest bias relative to corrosion cast estimates of l, and had highest repeatability
Theory of Bose-Einstein condensation in trapped gases
The phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases in traps is
reviewed from a theoretical perspective. Mean-field theory provides a framework
to understand the main features of the condensation and the role of
interactions between particles. Various properties of these systems are
discussed, including the density profiles and the energy of the ground state
configurations, the collective oscillations and the dynamics of the expansion,
the condensate fraction and the thermodynamic functions. The thermodynamic
limit exhibits a scaling behavior in the relevant length and energy scales.
Despite the dilute nature of the gases, interactions profoundly modify the
static as well as the dynamic properties of the system; the predictions of
mean-field theory are in excellent agreement with available experimental
results. Effects of superfluidity including the existence of quantized vortices
and the reduction of the moment of inertia are discussed, as well as the
consequences of coherence such as the Josephson effect and interference
phenomena. The review also assesses the accuracy and limitations of the

The sensuous secrets of shelter: how recollections of food stimulate Irish men's reconstructions of their early formative residential experiences in Leicester, Sheffield and Manchester
This paper examines the intersection between food, recollection and Irish migrantsâ reconstructions of their housing pathways in the three English cities of Leicester (East Midlands), Sheffield (South Yorkshire) and Manchester (North). Previous studies have acknowledged more implicitly the role of memory in representing the Irish migrant experience in England. Here, we adopt a different stance. We explore the mnemonic power of food to encode, decode and recode Irish menâs reconstructions of their housing pathways in England when constructing and negotiating otherness. In doing so, we apply a âProustian anthropologicalâ approach in framing the menâs representations of their formative residential experiences in the boarding houses of the three English cities during the 1950s and 1960s are examined. The extent to which food provided in the boarding houses was used as an instrument of discipline and control is examined. The relevance of food related acts of resistance, food insecurity and acts of hedonic meat-centric eating in constructing the menâs sociocultural identity are also explored
The assessment of vascular risk in men with erectile dysfunction: the role of the cardiologist and general physician.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) share risk factors and frequently coexist, with endothelial dysfunction believed to be the pathophysiologic link. ED is common, affecting more than 70% of men with known CVD. In addition, clinical studies have demonstrated that ED in men with no known CVD often precedes a CVD event by 2-5 years. ED severity has been correlated with increasing plaque burden in patients with coronary artery disease. ED is an independent marker of increased CVD risk including all-cause and especially CVD mortality, particularly in men aged 30-60 years. Thus, ED identifies a window of opportunity for CVD risk mitigation. We recommend that a thorough history, physical exam (including visceral adiposity), assessment of ED severity and duration and evaluation including fasting plasma glucose, lipids, resting electrocardiogram, family history, lifestyle factors, serum creatinine (estimated glomerular filtration rate) and albumin:creatinine ratio, and determination of the presence or absence of the metabolic syndrome be performed to characterise cardiovascular risk in all men with ED. Assessment of testosterone levels should also be considered and biomarkers may help to further quantify risk, even though their roles in development of CVD have not been firmly established. Finally, we recommend that a question about ED be included in assessment of CVD risk in all men and be added to CVD risk assessment guidelines
Risk of colorectal cancer for carriers of mutations in MUTYH, with and without a family history of cancer
We studied 2332 individuals with monoallelic mutations in MUTYH among 9504 relatives of 264 colorectal cancer (CRC) cases with a MUTYH mutation. We estimated CRC risks through 70 years of age of 7.2% for male carriers of monoallelic mutations (95% confidence interval [CI], 4.6%-11.3%) and 5.6% for female carriers of monoallelic mutations (95% CI, 3.6%-8.8%), irrespective of family history. For monoallelic MUTYH mutation carriers with a first-degree relative with CRC diagnosed by 50 years of age who does not have the MUTYH mutation, risks of CRC were 12.5% for men (95% CI, 8.6%-17.7%) and 10% for women (95% CI, 6.7%-14.4%). Risks of CRC for carriers of monoallelic mutations in MUTYH with a first-degree relative with CRC are sufficiently high to warrant more intensive screening than for the general population
