    Die mikrobiologische Qualität von in verschiedenen Betrieben hergestellten getrockneten Zwiebeln wurde in den Produktsjahren 1968—1971 auf Grund der Zahl der mesophil-aeroben Organismen und Schimmelpilze. Auf Grund der mathematisch-statistischen Auswertung der Angaben wurden die inneren mikrobiologischen Normen der Betriebe bestimmt. Diese inneren Normen kennzeichnen gut das durchschnittliche mikrobiologische Niveau der Produktion des Betriebes. Im Fall von gewissen Betriebe wurde ein Zusammenhang zwischen der mikrobiologischen Qualität des Endproduktes und der Behandlungsart des gegebenen Rohmaterials gefunden. The microbiological quality of dried onions produced in various plants was investigated in the production season 1968— 1971 by establishing the number of mesophilic-aerobic and mould organisms. The internal microbiological standards of the plants were determined on the basis of the mathematical statistical evaluation of the data. Те average microbiological level of the production of a given I plant is characterized well by the internal standard.     The antioxidant activity of some curcuminoids and chalcones

    The antioxidant properties of the synthetic compound (C1)–(C8), which comprised 7 curcuminoids and a chalcone, were evaluated by two complementary assays, DPPH and β-carotene/linoleic acid. It was found that, in general, the free radical scavenging ability of (C1)–(C8) was concentration-dependent. Compounds (C1) and (C4), which contained (4-OH) phenolic groups, were found to be highly potent antioxidants with higher antioxidant values than BHT suggesting that synthetic curcuminoids are more potent antioxidants than standard antioxidants like BHT. Using β-carotene-linoleic acid assay, only the water-soluble 2, 4,6-trihydroxyphenolic chalcone (C5) showed 85.2 % inhibition of the formation of conjugated dienes reflecting on its potent antioxidant activity

    Phytochemical studies and antioxidant activity of two South African medicinal plants traditionally used for the management of opportunistic fungal infections in HIV/AIDS patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It has been observed that perturbations in the antioxidant defense systems, and consequently redox imbalance, are present in many tissues of HIV-infected patients. Hence, the exogenous supply of antioxidants, as natural compounds that scavenge free radicals, might represent an important additional strategy for the treatment of HIV infection. The aim of this study was therefore to analyse the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant potential of <it>Gasteria bicolor </it>Haw and <it>Pittosporum viridiflorum </it>Sims., two South African plants traditionally used for the management of opportunistic fungal infections (OFIs) in AIDS patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The <it>in vitro </it>antioxidant properties of the two plants were screened through DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), NO (nitric oxide), H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>(hydrogen peroxide) radical scavenging effects and reducing power assays. Phytochemical studies were done by spectrophotometric techniques.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no significant differences in the flavonoid and proanthocyanidins contents between the leaves and bark extracts of <it>Gasteria bicolor </it>and <it>Pittosporum viridiflorum </it>respectively, while the total phenolic content of the bark extract of <it>P. viridiflorum </it>was significantly higher than that of <it>G. bicolor </it>leaf. The acetone extracts of both plants indicated strong antioxidant activities.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results from this study indicate that the leaves and stem extracts of <it>Gasteria bicolor </it>and <it>Pittosporum viridiflorum </it>respectively possess antioxidant properties and could serve as free radical inhibitors, acting possibly as primary antioxidants. Since reactive oxygen species are thought to be associated with the pathogenesis of AIDS, and HIV-infected individuals often have impaired antioxidant defenses, the inhibitory effect of the extracts on free radicals may partially justify the traditional use of these plants in the management of OFIs in HIV patients in South Africa.</p

    Analysis of antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant activities of Juniperus excelsa M. B subsp. Polycarpos (K. Koch) Takhtajan essential oil

    Juniperus excelsa M.B subsp. Polycarpos (K.Koch), collected from south of Iran, was subjected to hydrodistillation using clevenger apparatus to obtain essential oil. The essential was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and studied for antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant activities. The results indicated α-pinene (67.71%) as the major compound and α-cedral (11.5%), δ3-carene (5.19%) and limonene (4.41%) in moderate amounts. Antimicrobial tests were carried out using disk diffusion method, followed by the measurement of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). All the Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria were susceptible to essential oil. The oil showed radical scavenging and antioxidant effects

    Antioxidant activities and fatty acid composition of wild grown myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) fruits

    The fruits of eight myrtles, Myrtus communis L. accessions from the Mediterranean region of Turkey were evaluated for their antioxidant activities and fatty acid contents. The antioxidant activities of the fruit extracts were determined by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and β-carotene-linoleic acid assays. The fatty acid contents of fruits were determined by using gas chromatography. The methanol extracts of fruits exhibited a high level of free radical scavenging activity. There was a wide range (74.51-91.65%) of antioxidant activity among the accessions in the β-carotene-linoleic acid assay. The amount of total phenolics (TP) was determined to be between 44.41-74.44 μg Gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/mg, on a dry weight basis. Oleic acid was the dominant fatty acid (67.07%), followed by palmitic (10.24%), and stearic acid (8.19%), respectively. These results suggest the future utilization of myrtle fruit extracts as food additives or in chemoprevention studies
