Material Empathy in the Manufacture of a Multi-block Printed Wallcovering

This paper reflects on the interconnection between studio and factory production as the merging and metamorphosis of my printmaking practice. Specifically, the ‘process of correspondence’ (Ingold, 2013) in the making of multi-block matrices prior to factory printing. In 2020, Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo funded my artistic research, to embody ‘material empathy as the physicality of craft’ (Shales, 2017) in the manufacture of a multi-block printed wallcovering. How did first-hand knowledge of factory production impact my studio practice? What new insights into printmaking were revealed through the delimitations of manufacturing?Material Empathy in the Manufacture of a Multi-block Printed WallcoveringpublishedVersio

    Materiality of Ink

In this one-day seminar at KHiO, international leading experts in their academic, artistic, manufacturing, and scientific fields of research responded to Barbara Balfour’s Inkling, Thinking About Ink (2022). An exhibition of material artefacts embodying guest speakers' presentations, was located in KHiO's library and reception, and will be accessible for attendees during the seminar. "Something about the visual apprehension of ink, something about the haptic nature of ink, something about ink as a substance in and of itself, something about how printmakers are drawn to ink, it’s an inkling I have.'’ Barbara Balfour (2022). Artists are drawn to the haptic and visual presence of ink in the workshop, but now also question the socio-political and environmental impact of sourcing materials within a global distribution. For example, what are the ethical considerations when mining lapis lazuli in Afghanistan, to be ground into blue pigment? In addition, with a reduction in craft making of artists’ colours, and an increase in mass manufacturing of inorganic and synthetic pigments, there is now an ‘inkling’ amongst printmakers to suggest that the materiality of ink has also transformed, perhaps even diminished. Wo(rk)manship: Transforming reduction into tessellating multi-block relief prints

This article documents practice-led research from the artist’s position as print ‘maker’ within contemporary craft. The methodology embodies David Pye’s first-hand account of the workmanship of risk. The project integrates Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling to overcome process limitations; to realise scalable complex multi-block relief prints and to allow further exploration in colour printing. The report reflects on the process of transforming reduction relief prints into tessellating multi-block relief prints, as well as commenting on the situation and timescale in which the research took place. The outcome delivers new insights into the author’s artistic practice.publishedVersio

The purpose of the research was to revisit the process of carving the block and apportion more time in the studio to printing; to explore colour’s interdependence between static and active as an expressive form of perceptual dynamism. By remixing in colour, in three beats, in five beats, seven beats, twenty-four beats, the research led to new print-making idioms re-interpreted by post-production in music-making, generating a new methodology to my artistic practice. Documentation on Instagram The artistic research project was chronologically documented on Instagram (@VictoriaBrowne_), a mobile photo-sharing application and service that allows users to share photographs, videos and live broadcasts publicly or privately. Between August 2016 and January 2017, I uploaded 250 posts documenting data gathered in the field, activities in the studio, exhibitions visited and the outcome presented as a series of lectures and an exhibition. #GOSH Exhibition The outcome of the research was presented as an exhibition in the reception gallery during the inaugural Artistic Research Week at KHiO, for five hundred staff and students and an additional estimated two hundred international visitors over five days. #GOSH comprised of wall-mounted prints, a sound track, a sktechbook, a pamphlet publication, a series of relief blocks, a slide presentation and two reference books
