Regolith behavior under asteroid-level gravity conditions: low-velocity impact experiments

The dusty regolith covering the surfaces of asteroids and planetary satellites differs in size, shape, and composition from terrestrial soil particles and is subject to very different environmental conditions. Experimental studies of the response of planetary regolith in the relevant environmental conditions are thus necessary to facilitate future Solar System exploration activities. We combined the results and provided new data analysis elements for a series of impact experiments into simulated planetary regolith in low-gravity conditions using two experimental setups: the Physics of Regolith Impacts in Microgravity Experiment (PRIME) and the COLLisions Into Dust Experiment (COLLIDE). Results of these experimental campaigns found that there is a significant change in the regolith behavior with the gravity environment. In a 10-2g environment (Lunar g levels), only embedding of the impactor was observed and ejecta production was produced for most impacts at > 20 cm/s. Once at microgravity levels (<10-4g), the lowest impact energies also produced impactor rebound. In these microgravity conditions, ejecta started to be produced for impacts at > 10 cm/s. The measured ejecta speeds were lower than the ones measured at reduced-gravity levels, but the ejected masses were higher. The mean ejecta velocity shows a power-law dependence on the impact energy with an index of ~0.7. When projectile rebound occurred, we observed that its coefficients of restitution on the bed of regolith simulant decrease by a factor of 10 with increasing impact speeds from ~5 cm/s up to 100 cm/s. We could also observe an increased cohesion between the JSC-1 grains compared to the quartz sand targets

During the patron saint's feasts in several small towns of the Iberian Peninsula, it is the devil who persuades the "moors" to kidnap the Virgin Mary. This ritual abduction of the model woman in Iberian culture can be regarded as part of a symbolic complex expressed throughout the centuries in various significant ways, the persistency of which indicating its deeprooted presence in hearts and minds and its influence on collective values and beliefs. Here I propose a comparative ethnohistorical approach, using the analytical tools of visual anthropology, to the symbolism of the different images of the abducted woman appearing in such patron saint's feasts, whether sacred or profane.En las fiestas patronales de varios pueblos ibéricos, Luzbel convence a los «moros» para que se apoderen de la Virgen María. Este rapto ritual de la bella imagen de la mujer modélica en nuestra cultura se puede incluir dentro de un complejo simbólico expresado a lo largo de los siglos con muy vanadas formas significantes; persistencia que indica su profunda implantación psíquica e influencia en las creencias y valores colectivos. Aquí se propone una aproximación comparativa etnohistórica, con el instrumental analítico de la antropología visual, para abordar el simbolismo de las diversas imágenes de la mujer raptada que aparecen en dichas representaciones festivas, tanto religiosas como profanas

1492 was also the year of the conquest of Granada. The victorious Catholic Kings made provision for the perpetua! conmemoration of this military event, charged with very spedal symbolic significan ce. Here I shall proceed to trace the formal evolution of such celebrations in Granada itself as well as the festive repercussions of the event in other areas. A model of the «conmemorative universe» will be put forward which will comprise the historical event, its institucionalized memory and its ritual repercussions. From the in-depth study of a specific case of a conmemorative process I wish to draw attention to some anthropological considerations concerning conmemorative mechanisms in general.1492 también fue el año de la conquista de Granada. Desde la antropología visual, con ayuda de la iconología, se emprende una aproximación etnohistórica al complejo simbólico que integran los emblemas monárquicos. Se analizarán en profundidad las coronas y los bastones de mando o cetros, y tras recorrer diversos ritos de coronación, estudiaremos el modelo pictórico de presentar a los monarcas hispanos y la evolución del objeto-símbolo de su poder.From the standpoint of visual anthropology, aided by iconology, we undertake an ethnohistorical approach to the symbolic complex expressed by monarchic emblems.
