Oxygen enhanced atomic chain formation
We report experimental evidence for atomic chain formation during stretching
of atomic-sized contacts for gold and silver, that is strongly enhanced due to
oxygen incorporation. While gold has been known for its tendency to form atomic
chains, for silver this is only observed in the presence of oxygen. With oxygen
the silver chains are as long as those for gold, but the conductance drops with
chain length to about 0.1 conductance quantum. A relation is suggested with
previous work on surface reconstructions for silver (110) surfaces after
chemisorption of oxygen.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Vibrationally Induced Two-Level Systems in Single-Molecule Junctions
Single-molecule junctions are found to show anomalous spikes in dI/dV
spectra. The position in energy of the spikes are related to local vibration
mode energies. A model of vibrationally induced two-level systems reproduces
the data very well. This mechanism is expected to be quite general for
single-molecule junctions. It acts as an intrinsic amplification mechanism for
local vibration mode features and may be exploited as a new spectroscopic tool.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Spatiotemporal profile of peri-saccadic contrast sensitivity
Sensitivity to luminance contrast is reduced just before and during saccades (saccadic suppression), whereas sensitivity to color contrast is unimpaired peri-saccadically and enhanced post-saccadically. The exact spatiotemporal map of these perceptual effects is as yet unknown. Here, we measured detection thresholds for briefly flashed Gaussian blobs modulated in either luminance or chromatic contrast, displayed at a range of eccentricities. Sensitivity to luminance contrast was reduced peri-saccadically by a scaling factor, which was almost constant across retinal space. Saccadic suppression followed a similar time course across all tested eccentricities and was maximal shortly after the saccade onset. Sensitivity to chromatic contrast was enhanced post-saccadically at all tested locations. The enhancement was not specifically linked to the execution of saccades, as it was also observed following a displacement of retinal images comparable to that caused by a saccade. We conclude that luminance and chromatic contrast sensitivities are subject to distinct modulations at the time of saccades, resulting from independent neural processes
Bran, Hypertriglyceridemia and Urate Clearance
Eight subjects having raised triglyceride levels associated with conditions such s diabetes, hyperuricaemia, obesity and hypothyroidism were given 50g of bran per day to determine the effect of increasing dietary fibre on triglyceride and purine metabolism. The study continued for two months. No significant effect was noted on the serum cholesterol or triglyceride level. There was a significant (
The semi-classical expansion and resurgence in gauge theories: new perturbative, instanton, bion, and renormalon effects
We study the dynamics of four dimensional gauge theories with adjoint
fermions for all gauge groups, both in perturbation theory and
non-perturbatively, by using circle compactification with periodic boundary
conditions for the fermions. There are new gauge phenomena. We show that, to
all orders in perturbation theory, many gauge groups are Higgsed by the gauge
holonomy around the circle to a product of both abelian and nonabelian gauge
group factors. Non-perturbatively there are monopole-instantons with fermion
zero modes and two types of monopole-anti-monopole molecules, called bions. One
type are "magnetic bions" which carry net magnetic charge and induce a mass gap
for gauge fluctuations. Another type are "neutral bions" which are magnetically
neutral, and their understanding requires a generalization of multi-instanton
techniques in quantum mechanics - which we refer to as the
Bogomolny-Zinn-Justin (BZJ) prescription - to compactified field theory. The
BZJ prescription applied to bion-anti-bion topological molecules predicts a
singularity on the positive real axis of the Borel plane (i.e., a divergence
from summing large orders in peturbation theory) which is of order N times
closer to the origin than the leading 4-d BPST instanton-anti-instanton
singularity, where N is the rank of the gauge group. The position of the
bion--anti-bion singularity is thus qualitatively similar to that of the 4-d IR
renormalon singularity, and we conjecture that they are continuously related as
the compactification radius is changed. By making use of transseries and
Ecalle's resurgence theory we argue that a non-perturbative continuum
definition of a class of field theories which admit semi-classical expansions
may be possible.Comment: 112 pages, 7 figures; v2: typos corrected, discussion of

CHIP: Commodity based Hazard Identification Protocol for emerging diseases in plants and animals
This project comprised the development of a commodity-based hazard identification protocol for biological hazards in plants and animals as a decision support tree programmed in Excel. The content of the decision tree is based on the results of a systematic review of pest and pathogen characteristics, a review of risk assessment schemes and on expert judgement. Application of the protocol results in an indication of the level of likelihood of entry of animal and plant pathogens/pests in the area of destination associated with the commodity/pathway, and it guides the decision regarding potential actions to be undertaken in the search for existing and emerging pathogens/pests
On Deformations of n-Lie algebras
The aim of this paper is to review the deformation theory of -Lie
algebras. We summarize the 1-parameter formal deformation theory and provide a
generalized approach using any unital commutative associative algebra as a
deformation base. Moreover, we discuss degenerations and quantization of
-Lie algebras.Comment: Proceeding of the conference Dakar's Workshop in honor of Pr Amin
