Image metadata estimation using independent component analysis and regression

    Get PDF
In this paper, we describe an approach to camera metadata estimation using regression based on Independent Component Analysis (ICA). Semantic scene classification of images using camera metadata related to capture conditions has had some success in the past. However, different makes and models of camera capture different types of metadata and this severely hampers the application of this kind of approach in real systems that consist of photos captured by many different users. We propose to address this issue by using regression to predict the missing metadata from observed data, thereby providing more complete (and hence more useful) metadata for the entire image corpus. The proposed approach uses an ICA based approach to regression

Applying social learning where ‘business-as-usual’ solutions no longer work for complex problems and programs

    Get PDF
Key messages • Social learning facilitates sharing and learning beyond individuals to networks and systems. Through a facilitated, iterative process of joint work, dialogue and reflection, new shared ways of knowing emerge that lead to changes in practice. • Social learning has real potential to unlock change and transform relationships between actors involved in complex programs and/or dealing with ‘wicked problems’. Adversely it is not advisable to pursue for simple initiatives. • Social learning offers many thematic and pragmatic entry points to be embedded in the CGIAR research programs around partnerships, innovation systems, monitoring and evaluation

Validation of stellar population and kinematical analysis of galaxies

3D spectroscopy produces hundreds of spectra from which maps of the characteristics of stellar populations (age-metallicity) and internal kinematics of galaxies can be derived. We carried on simulations to assess the reliability of inversion methods and to define the requirements for future observations. We quantify the biases and show that to minimize the errors on the kinematics, age and metallicity (in a given observing time) the size of the spatial elements and the spectral dispersion should be chosen to obtain an instrumental velocity dispersion comparable to the physical dispersion.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, extended version of a poster proceeding to appear in "Science Perspectives for 3D Spectroscopy", eds.

In the library of Landévennec Abbey, there is a Passion of the Christ, copied in 1724 by Yves Le Borgne, who lived in Pleudaniel. Through three extracts, the author of this article proposes a sociolinguistic reading of the play. Indeed, the dialectal variants between Trégor and Goëlo introduced in the play make it possible to hear differences of register between the characters

Study of the dynamics of the core of A2218

    Get PDF
We report the results of an attempt to study the velocity structure of the core of the cluster A2218 in order to probe its dynamical state. The aim is to understand if the core is indeed virialized? relaxed? or in hydrodynamic equilibrium? We use cluster lensing data in conjunction with the optical galaxy data to solve in detail for the nature of galaxy orbits and the velocity anisotropy in the core. We present our preliminary results below.Comment: uuencoded compressed postscript, without figure. The preprint is available in complete form at http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/preprint/PrePrint.htm
