Prior exercise and antioxidant supplementation: effect on oxidative stress and muscle injury
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Both acute bouts of prior exercise (preconditioning) and antioxidant nutrients have been used in an attempt to attenuate muscle injury or oxidative stress in response to resistance exercise. However, most studies have focused on untrained participants rather than on athletes. The purpose of this work was to determine the independent and combined effects of antioxidant supplementation (vitamin C + mixed tocopherols/tocotrienols) and prior eccentric exercise in attenuating markers of skeletal muscle injury and oxidative stress in resistance trained men.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Thirty-six men were randomly assigned to: no prior exercise + placebo; no prior exercise + antioxidant; prior exercise + placebo; prior exercise + antioxidant. Markers of muscle/cell injury (muscle performance, muscle soreness, C-reactive protein, and creatine kinase activity), as well as oxidative stress (blood protein carbonyls and peroxides), were measured before and through 48 hours of exercise recovery.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No group by time interactions were noted for any variable (P > 0.05). Time main effects were noted for creatine kinase activity, muscle soreness, maximal isometric force and peak velocity (P < 0.0001). Protein carbonyls and peroxides were relatively unaffected by exercise.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There appears to be no independent or combined effect of a prior bout of eccentric exercise or antioxidant supplementation as used here on markers of muscle injury in resistance trained men. Moreover, eccentric exercise as used in the present study results in minimal blood oxidative stress in resistance trained men. Hence, antioxidant supplementation for the purpose of minimizing blood oxidative stress in relation to eccentric exercise appears unnecessary in this population.</p

Intermittency in 200 GeV/nucleon S+S collisions
We have studied one and two-dimensional intermittency in S+S collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon in a high statistics electronic measurement at the CERN SPS using pad-readout streamer tubes. We observe no intermittency signal beyond that produced by folding the Fritiof event generator with a detailed model of our detector. Even though the observed signal contains significant distortions due to experimental effects, we show that we are sensitive to intermittency in the collision
Low frequency ultrasound debridement (Sonoca-185) in acute wound management: a case study
There are numerous evidence-based wound debridement techniques that promote wound healing. However, some of these techniques may cause discomfort and pain for the patient and can be costly for the health care provider. A new, non-invasive wound debridement technique known as low-frequency ultrasonic debridement (LFUD) has been used for the removal of unhealthy tissue and bacterial load in wound management in the clinical setting. This paper reports the use of LFUD by a skin integrity clinical nurse consultant (CNC) as an adjuvant wound debridement and healing technique in a patient with a parastomal abscess. LFUD was found to benefit this patient in terms of expedited wound healing and increased comfort, enabling the patient to have a successful skin graft that led to complete wound closure and discharge from hospital in a timely manner
Nonlocal restoration of two-mode squeezing in the presence of strong optical loss
We present the experimental realization of a theoretical effect discovered by
Olivares and Paris, in which a pair of entangled optical beams undergoing
independent losses can see nonlocal correlations restored by the use of a
nonlocal resource correlating the losses. Twin optical beams created in an
entangled Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) state by an optical parametric
oscillator above threshold were subjected to 50% loss from beamsplitters in
their paths. The resulting severe degradation of the signature quantum
correlations observed between the two beams was then suppressed when another,
independent EPR state impinged upon the other input ports of the beamsplitters,
effectively entangling the losses inflicted to the initial EPR state. The
additional EPR beam pair was classically coherent with the primary one but had
no quantum correlations with it. This result may find applications as a quantum

Effect of betaine supplementation on plasma nitrate/nitrite in exercise-trained men
Background: Betaine, beetroot juice, and supplemental nitrate have recently been reported to improve certain aspects of exercise performance, which may be mechanistically linked to increased nitric oxide. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of betaine supplementation on plasma nitrate/nitrite, a surrogate marker or nitric oxide, in exercise-trained men.Methods: We used three different study designs (acute intake of betaine at 1.25 and 5.00 grams, chronic intake of betaine at 2.5 grams per day for 14 days, and chronic [6 grams of betaine per day for 7 days] followed by acute intake [6 grams]), all involving exercise-trained men, to investigate the effects of orally ingested betaine on plasma nitrate/nitrite. Blood samples were collected before and at 30, 60, 90, and 120 min after ingestion of 1.25 and 5.00 grams of betaine (Study 1); before and after 14 days of betaine supplementation at a dosage of 2.5 grams (Study 2); and before and after 7 days of betaine supplementation at a dosage of 6 grams, followed by acute ingestion of 6 grams and blood measures at 30 and 60 min post ingestion (Study 3).Results: In Study 1, nitrate/nitrite was relatively unaffected and no statistically significant interaction (p = 0.99), dosage (p = 0.69), or time (p = 0.91) effects were noted. Similar findings were noted in Study 2, with no statistically significant interaction (p = 0.57), condition (p = 0.98), or pre/post intervention (p = 0.17) effects noted for nitrate/nitrite. In Study 3, no statistically significant changes were noted in nitrate/nitrite between collection times (p = 0.97).Conclusion: Our data indicate that acute or chronic ingestion of betaine by healthy, exercise-trained men does not impact plasma nitrate/nitrite. These findings suggest that other mechanisms aside from increasing circulating nitric oxide are likely responsible for any performance enhancing effect of betaine supplementation. © 2011 Bloomer et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
Real-Gas Effects and Phase Separation in Underexpanded Jets at Engine-Relevant Conditions
A numerical framework implemented in the open-source tool OpenFOAM is
presented in this work combining a hybrid, pressure-based solver with a
vapor-liquid equilibrium model based on the cubic equation of state. This
framework is used in the present work to investigate underexpanded jets at
engine-relevant conditions where real-gas effects and mixture induced phase
separation are probable to occur. A thorough validation and discussion of the
applied vapor-liquid equilibrium model is conducted by means of general
thermodynamic relations and measurement data available in the literature.
Engine-relevant simulation cases for two different fuels were defined. Analyses
of the flow field show that the used fuel has a first order effect on the
occurrence of phase separation. In the case of phase separation two different
effects could be revealed causing the single-phase instability, namely the
strong expansion and the mixing of the fuel with the chamber gas. A comparison
of single-phase and two-phase jets disclosed that the phase separation leads to
a completely different penetration depth in contrast to single-phase injection
and therefore commonly used analytical approaches fail to predict the

Impact of short-term dietary modification on postprandial oxidative stress
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We have recently reported that short-term (21-day) dietary modification in accordance with a stringent vegan diet (i.e., a Daniel Fast) lowers blood lipids as well as biomarkers of oxidative stress. However, this work only involved measurements obtained in a fasted state. In the present study, we determined the postprandial response to a high-fat milkshake with regards to blood triglycerides (TAG), biomarkers of oxidative stress, and hemodynamic variables before and following a 21-day Daniel Fast.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Twenty-two subjects (10 men and 12 women; aged 35 ± 3 years) completed a 21-day Daniel Fast. To induce oxidative stress, a milkshake (fat = 0.8 g·kg<sup>-1</sup>; carbohydrate = 1.0 g·kg<sup>-1</sup>; protein = 0.25 g·kg<sup>-1</sup>) was consumed by subjects on day one and day 22 in a rested and 12-hour fasted state. Before and at 2 and 4 h after consumption of the milkshake, heart rate (HR) and blood pressure were measured. Blood samples were also collected at these times and analyzed for TAG, malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), nitrate/nitrite (NOx), and Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A time effect was noted for HR (<it>p </it>= 0.006), with values higher at 2 hr post intake of the milkshake as compared to pre intake (<it>p </it>< 0.05). Diastolic blood pressure was lower post fast as compared to pre fast (<it>p </it>= 0.02), and a trend for lower systolic blood pressure was noted (<it>p </it>= 0.07). Time effects were noted for TAG (<it>p </it>= 0.001), MDA (<it>p </it>< 0.0001), H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>(<it>p </it>< 0.0001), AOPP (<it>p </it>< 0.0001), and TEAC (<it>p </it>< 0.0001); all concentrations were higher at 2 h and 4 h post intake compared to pre intake, except for TEAC, which was lower at these times (<it>p </it>< 0.05). A condition effect was noted for NOx (<it>p </it>= 0.02), which was higher post fast as compared to pre fast. No pre/post fast × time interactions were noted (<it>p </it>> 0.05), with the area under the curve from pre to post fast reduced only slightly for TAG (11%), MDA (11%), H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>(8%), and AOPP (12%), with a 37% increase noted for NOx.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Partaking in a 21-day Daniel Fast does not result in a statistically significant reduction in postprandial oxidative stress. It is possible that a longer time course of adherence to the Daniel Fast eating plan may be needed to observe significant findings.</p
Collaboration and contestation in further and higher education partnerships in England: a Bourdieusian field analysis
Internationally, ‘College for All’ policies are creating new forms of vocational higher education (HE), and shifting relationships between HE and further education (FE) institutions. In this paper, we consider the way in which this is being implemented in England, drawing on a detailed qualitative case study of a regional HE–FE partnership to widen participation. We focus on the complex mix of collaboration and contestation that arose within it, and how these affected socially differentiated groups of students following high- and low-status routes through its provision. We outline Bourdieu’s concept of ‘field’ as a framework for our analysis and interpretation, including its theoretical ambiguities regarding the definition and scale of fields. Through hermeneutic dialogue between data and theory, we tentatively suggest that such partnerships represent bridges between HE and FE. These bridges are strong between higher-status institutions, but highly contested between lower-status institutions competing closely for distinction. We conclude that the trajectories and outcomes for socially disadvantaged students require attention and collective action to address the inequalities they face, and that our theoretical approach may have wider international relevance beyond the English case
Surface ozone variability and the jet position: Implications for projecting future air quality
Changes in the variability of surface ozone can affect the incidence of ozone pollution events. Analysis of multi-century simulations from a chemistry climate model shows that present-day summertime variability of surface ozone depends strongly on the jet stream position over eastern North America. This relationship holds on decadal time scales under projected climate change scenarios, in which surface ozone variability follows the robust poleward shift of the jet. The correlation between ozone and co-located temperature over eastern North America is also closely tied to the jet position, implying that local ozone-temperature relationships may change as the circulation changes. Jet position can thus serve as a dynamical predictor of future surface ozone variability over eastern North America and may also modulate ozone variability in other northern midlatitude regions
