"Get Your Gavel Out of My Pants": Replacing the Medical and Legal Scrutiny of Trans Bodies with Self-Identification as a Basis for Changing Sex Markers on Birth Certificates
Section 28 of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 1995 allows people to apply to the Family Court to change the sex marker on their birth certificate. This essay argues that this provision is out-dated and does not serve the needs of the trans community. It is based on the medical model of sex, and requires medical evidence that the applicant’s body conforms sufficiently to that of the “nominated sex”. This essay suggests a reform based on the self-identification model, which exists in Argentina for birth certificates, and in New Zealand for passports and drivers’ licences. Such a reform of s 28 would bring birth certificates in line with these other documents, leading to more consistency and increased respect for the human rights of trans people
Sex Markers on Birth Certificates: Replacing the Medical Model with Self-Identification
Section 28 of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 1995 allows people to apply to the Family Court to change the sex marker on their birth certificate. This article argues that this provision is outdated and does not go far enough in providing legal recognition for trans people. It is based on the medical model of sex, and requires medical evidence that the applicant's body conforms sufficiently to that of the "nominated sex". The major problem with this requirement is that the required medical interventions are unavailable or undesirable for many trans people, so should not be a basis for legal recognition. The medical model also privileges medical and judicial expertise above a person's own identity and experience. This article suggests a reform based on the self-identification model, which exists in Argentina for birth certificates, and in New Zealand for passports and drivers' licences. Such a reform of s 28 would bring birth certificates in line with these other documents, leading to more consistency and increased respect for the human rights of trans people
PROCURING PRODUCE IN A RURAL, APPALACHIAN COUNTY: A THEMATIC ANALYSIS OF COMMUNITY MEMBER EXPERIENCES
Rates of obesity and other health disparities are exceptionally high in rural Appalachian counties compared to the nation as a whole. One causal factor of these health disparities in Appalachian counties is the inequitable allocation of healthy food. Food insecurity and the local food environment are large drivers for obesity experienced by Martin County, Kentucky residents. Successful socioecological model (SEM) and policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) interventions have shown promising results in reducing obesity and enhancing food security in this population. Through the transcription of semi-structured focus group interviews, thematic analysis aimed to obtain perspectives on the local food system. This study identified major barriers, facilitators, and existing food programs relative to produce procurement in Martin County. Findings from this study will be used to tailor food security interventions for Appalachian counties in effort to reduce the obesity prevalence in this population
A Cartesian co-ordinate system for representing the second to fifth metacarpals in the human hand
Description: This is tha authors' PDF version of an article published in Radiography© 2004. The definitive version is available at www.elsevierhealth.comPurpose The use of hand radiographs has both clinical and anthropometric applications. However, a method for converting standard bony points within the metacarpus to Cartesian co-ordinates does not exist. Methods A simple method for converting standard bony points of the second to fifth metacarpals to Cartesian co-ordinates is described for the first time. Results Using a small set of measurements and treating these with equations of known voracity, this method is accurate and allows the metacarpus to be interro¬gated via a much wider range of geometrical techniques than has so far been available. Conclusions This method allows naked-eye assessments to be supported or re¬placed by metrical evaluations. It is likely to have both clinical and anthropometric uses.University of Liverpool research development grant
Solid State Polyaniline Supercapacitors Based on Electrodes Fabricated with Electropolymerization
Supercapacitors are energy storage devices with the potential to overshadow lithium-ion batteries in the energy storage sector. Generally supercapacitors store less energy than a lithium-ion battery, but make up for it with much higher power densities that allow supercapacitors to charge and discharge quickly. This can be through the formation of an electric double layer or faradaic phenomenon between the electrode and electrolyte. The energy storage mechanism relies heavily on the electrode material and the ions contained within the electrolyte. In this research, polyaniline was used as an active material to prepare supercapacitors. Polyaniline is a conductive polymer that is redox active and can be fabricated to be highly porous, making it an excellent choice for supercapacitors. It was found that a specific concentration of precursor solution containing aniline in diluted sulfuric acid could be electropolymerized at an optimized voltage of 1.21V to form an anodic deposit of polyaniline capable of 612 F/g in a half-cell with standard 1M H2SO4 electrolyte. This can be enhanced with hydroquinone as a redox mediator, causing the half-cell to exhibit 3,416 F/g on average with 0.1M hydroquinone added to the electrolyte. This design was further tested in a full cell with aqueous electrolyte and polyvinyl alcohol electrolyte. The final design iteration is a symmetric solid state supercapacitor with polyvinyl alcohol electrolyte containing hydroquinone. The completed device exhibited 307 F/g on average

Derrida and economics : the economics of depression
Derrida and Economics analyses two essays of Jacques Derrida on the
Public and Democracy, alongside other essays reflecting these
political works. However, Derrida's political thought will be taken
seriously by emphasising Economics before Politics. Economics will be
viewed as a detour, a detour inflecting every attempt to present a
meaningful political position or stable political realm. For Derrida,
economics has the force of an oblique ruse.
Derrida ADd BconoDdcs aligns Derrida's view of economics with the
Eighteenth Century realisation that a stable SOciety, analogous to
the Antique ideal of the Polis, is neither a common goal nor a proper
object for Political philosophy. Here, Classical economics emerges as
an oblique attempt to construct the conditions for the possibility of
a political body through economic relations. This epistemological 'en
passant' is familiar, in Britain, as Adam Smith's' Invisible Hand'.
For Derrida, the equi valent Continental ruse is distinguished by a
faith in 'dialectical idealisation'; a process bent upon securing an
idealised po 11 tical space, but unable to limit its more speculati ve
drifts.
If Classical economics represents an attempt to construct the
possibility of the Body Politic, Derrida's political essays
deconstruct this possibility. His emphasiS upon the 'possible'
highlights the effects of risk and competition in an economy that
could never comfortably be identified wi th a stable Polt tical realm.
For Derrida, economics is not simply an attempt to secure or rewrite
more direct Political discourses. As he argues, its every detour is
haunted by the possibility of speculative failure. Derrida argues an
enthusiasm for economics can also imply a preoccupation with the
finitude of the Body Politic. This observation allows him to comment
upon the valorisation of death or redundancy in certain poli tical
discourses; i. e. those analyses that, in the throes of Depression,
remain devoted to the idea of redundancy as though to the object of a
renewed political will
A survey of social media users privacy settings & information disclosure
This research utilises a comprehensive survey to ascertain the level of social networking site personal information disclosure by members at the time of joining the membership and their subsequent postings to the sites. Areas examined are the type of information they reveal, their level of knowledge and awareness regarding how their information is protected by SNSs and the awareness of risks that over-sharing may pose. Additionally, this research studies the effect of gender, age, education, and level of privacy concern on the amount and kind of personal information disclosure and privacy settings applied. A social experiment was then run for 3 months that tested SNSs users’ reaction to a profile access request by a stranger. The research focused on four different social networks: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. The results of the survey and experiment found that there is a significant amount of personal information disclosure, but that the level differs between social networks. It is reveals that gender, age, and education have significant influences on information disclosure and user’s privacy settings and that on most sites over 50% of friend requests were readily accepted. These results are a selection from a comprehensive study of some of the more revealing facts about SNS user ship covering 3 months of data collection and almost 500 responses
