    My Ecuadorian Host Mother

    Get PDF
While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield College write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Nicole Bissey describes her observations during her study abroad program at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador

The program for the simulation of electoral systems ALEX4.1: what it does and how to use it.

    Get PDF
This paper illustrates ALEX4.1, the 2007 version of the program of simulation of electoral systems developed at ALEX, the Laboratory for Experimental and Simulative Economics of the Università del Piemonte Orientale at Alessandria, Italy. The main features of the program have been described with reference to a previous version in Bissey, Carini and Ortona, 2004; the paper may be freely downloaded from the site of the journal where it has been published, or in its working paper version from the site http://polis.unipmn.it/. The organization of this paper is, consequently, rather unusual. The next section presents only the very basic traits of the simulation program, as most details and theoretical considerations may be read in the quoted (and easy-to-find) reference. Sections 3 and 4 are the most important: they illustrate the novelties of ALEX4.1 with respect to previous versions. Section 5 is very short, as it contains only the instructions for downloading the program, and some caveats regarding its use. The core of the paper is a large appendix that contains the readme file of the package ALEX4.1. Actually, this paper should be considered a handbook for the use of ALEX4.1.

Generalized Parton Distributions of the Pion

Off-forward structure functions of the pion are investigated in twist-two and twist-three approximation. A simple model is used for the pion, which allows to introduce finite size effects, while preserving gauge invariance. Results for the imaginary parts of the gamma^* pi -> gamma^* pi off-forward amplitude and of the structure functions are presented. Generalized Callan-Gross relations are obtained.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX, uses espcrc2.sty (included), presented at QCD03 Conference, Montpellier, France, July 200

Dynamical relativistic corrections to the leptonic decay width of heavy quarkonia

    Get PDF
We calculate the dynamical relativistic corrections, originating from radiative one-gluon-exchange, to the leptonic decay width of heavy quarkonia in the framework of a covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics. Comparison with the non-relativistic calculations of the leptonic decay width of J=1 charmonium and bottomonium S-ground states shows that relativistic corrections are large. Most importantly, the calculation of these dynamical relativistic corrections legitimate a perturbative expansion in αs\alpha_s, even in the charmonium sector. This is in contrast with the ongoing belief based on calculations in the non-relativistic limit. Consequences for the ability of several phenomenological potential to describe these decays are drawn.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

Complete analysis of spin structure function g1 of He-3

We present a comprehensive analysis of the nuclear effects important in DIS on polarized He-3 over a wide range of Bjorken x, 10^{-4} \leq x \leq 0.8. Effects relevant for the extraction of the neutron spin structure function, g1^n, from the He-3 data are emphasized.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures, LaTe

    Jekyll and Hyde

Jekyll and Hyde were in fact two people inside the same person – an obviously dynamically inconsistent person. In the book and in the movie, the dynamic inconsistency was resolved in arather dramatic way. We investigate its resolution in the laboratory.dynamic inconsistency, saving, consumption, naïve, resolute, sophisticated, dual selves

An Innovative Experimental Study of Corner Radius Effect on Cutting Forces

    Get PDF
The cutting forces are often modelled using edge discretisation methodology. In finish turning, due to the smaller corner radii, the use of a local cutting force model identified from orthogonal cutting tests poses a significant challenge. In this paper, the local effect of the corner radius on the forces is investigated using a new experimental configuration: corner cutting tests involving the tool nose. The results are compared with inverse identifications based on cylindrical turning tests and elementary cutting tests on tubes. The results obtained from these methods consistently show the significant influence of the corner radius on the cutting forces
