Taking reincarnation seriously: Critical discussion of some central ideas from John Hick
Reincarnation has not been entirely neglected in the philosophy of religion but it has not always been taken seriously or carefully discussed in relation to its role in believersâ lives. John Hick is exceptional insofar as he gave sustained attention to the belief, at least as it features in the philosophies of VedÄnta and Buddhism. While acknowledging the value of Hickâs recognition of the variety of reincarnation beliefs, this article critically engages with certain aspects of his approach. It argues that Hickâs search for a âcriterionâ of reincarnation is misguided, and that his distinction between âfactualâ and âmythicâ forms of the doctrine is over-simplifying
âPaying Attentionâ in a Digital Economy: Reflections on the Role of Analysis and Judgement Within Contemporary Discourses of Mindfulness and Comparisons with Classical Buddhist Accounts of Sati
This chapter examines the question of the role of intellectual analysis and ethical judgement in ancient Indian Buddhist accounts of sati and contemporary discourses about âmindfulnessâ. Attention is paid to the role of paññ? (Sanskrit: prajñ?: âwisdomâ or âanalytical insightâ) and ethical reflection in the cultivation of sati in mainstream Abhidharma and early Mah?y?na philosophical discussions in India, noting the existence of a subordinate strand of Buddhist thought which focuses upon the non-conceptuality of final awakening (bodhi) and the quiescence of mind. Modern discourses of mindfulness are examined in relation to detraditionalization, the global spread of capitalism and widespread adoption of new information technologies. It is argued that analysis of the exponential growth in popularity of âmindfulnessâ techniques must be linked to an exploration of the modern history of attention, more specifically, the possibility that the use of fast-paced, digital, multimedia technologies is facilitating a demand for fragmented or dispersed attention. It is argued that the fault line between divergent contemporary accounts of mindfulness can be seen most clearly over the issue of the role of ethical judgements and mental ratiocination within mindfulness practice. The two most extreme versions on this spectrum see mindfulness on the one hand as a secular mental technology for calming the mind and reducing stress and discomfort, and on the other as a deeply ethical and experiential realization of the geopolitics of human experience. These, it is suggested, constitute an emerging discursive split in accounts of mindfulness reflective of divergent responses to the social, economic, political and technological changes occurring in relation to the global spread of neoliberal forms of capitalism
Incorporating mindfulness: questioning capitalism
This paper engages with Buddhist critiques of capitalism and consumerism; and it challenges the capitalist appropriations of Buddhist techniques. We show how Buddhist modernism and Marxism/socialism can align, and how Engaged Buddhism spawns communalism and socially revolutionary impulses for sustainability and ecological responsibility within the framework of Buddhist thought and mindfulness traditions. Our case study of the Thai Asoke community exemplifies Buddhist communal mindfulness-in-action, explores successes and idiosyncrasies, and shows how communal principles can operate in such work-based communities
Healing through culturally embedded practice: an investigation of counsellorsâ and clientsâ experiences of Buddhist Counselling in Thailand
This thesis is concerned with an exploration of counsellorsâ and clientsâ lived experiences of
Buddhist Counselling, an indigenous Buddhist-based counselling approach in Thailand. Over
the past decade, Buddhist Counselling has received a growing interest from Thai counselling
trainees and practitioners, and it has also expanded to serve Thai people in various settings.
Research on Buddhist Counselling is very limited and most of the existing studies in the
field have focused on measuring the effectiveness of the approach. While these studies have
consistently indicated the positive effects of Buddhist Counselling on psychological
improvement across several population groups, the significant questions of how Buddhist
Counselling brings about such outcome and how it is experienced are still largely
unanswered. Moreover, existing research is concentrated much more on clientsâ views than
counsellorsâ views, although counsellorsâ views of their counselling practice can also serve as
a knowledge base of the field. This thesis thus sets out to contribute to rectifying this
omission by exploring Buddhist Counselling from the perspectives of both counsellors and
clients.
The thesis is based on two qualitative studies. The first study addressed Buddhist
Counselling from the perspective of five counsellors through a focus group and semi-structured
interviews. The second study explored Buddhist Counselling from the perspective
of three clients, using two semi-structured interviews with each of them. All data received
were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).
The study reveals counsellorsâ and clientsâ overall positive experience of engaging in
Buddhist Counselling. Central to the accounts of the counsellors are the following
perceptions: that their practice of Buddhist Counselling is culturally congruent with the
existing values and beliefs of both themselves and their clients; that their personal and
professional congruence is key to their therapeutic efficacy; and that they enhance such
congruence through their application of Buddhist ideas and practices in their daily lives. Key
to the clientsâ accounts is their emphasis on the significant roles of the counsellorsâ Buddhist
ideas and personal qualities, and of their religious practices in facilitating healing and change.
Key shared findings from both studies reveal that the participantsâ accounts of their cultural
background and their experiences of Buddhist Counselling are intertwined. Adopting
hermeneutics to address this intertwinement, I reveal the cultural and moral dimensions
underlying the practice of Buddhist Counselling. Based on such revelation, I suggest that
Buddhist Counselling in particular, as well as psychotherapy in general, should be better
understood as a historically situated, culturally bound, and morally constituted activity of
people who are concerned with improving the quality of their lives and their community,
rather than the transcultural and merely relational work of morally-neutral practitioners
