ENERGY CONSERVATION THROUGH INCREASED EMISSIVITY IN FURNACES
The article describes a new method which increases radiation heat transfer of furnace
refractory linings. The method, which is the application of a high emissivity coating,
results partly in energy savings, partly increases gas tightness and life span of the lining.
As heating time is decreased, the method also makes the operation of the furnace more
flexible. Application of ENECOAT furnace coating increases the emissivity of ceramic
fibre insulations by 45 %, while that of shamotte by 20 %. The phenomenon is illustrated

Variability of M giant stars based on Kepler photometry: general characteristics
M giants are among the longest-period pulsating stars which is why their
studies were traditionally restricted to analyses of low-precision visual
observations, and more recently, accurate ground-based data. Here we present an
overview of M giant variability on a wide range of time-scales (hours to
years), based on analysis of thirteen quarters of Kepler long-cadence
observations (one point per every 29.4 minutes), with a total time-span of over
1000 days. About two-thirds of the sample stars have been selected from the
ASAS-North survey of the Kepler field, with the rest supplemented from a
randomly chosen M giant control sample.
We first describe the correction of the light curves from different quarters,
which was found to be essential. We use Fourier analysis to calculate multiple
frequencies for all stars in the sample. Over 50 stars show a relatively strong
signal with a period equal to the Kepler-year and a characteristic phase
dependence across the whole field-of-view. We interpret this as a so far
unidentified systematic effect in the Kepler data. We discuss the presence of
regular patterns in the distribution of multiple periodicities and amplitudes.
In the period-amplitude plane we find that it is possible to distinguish
between solar-like oscillations and larger amplitude pulsations which are
characteristic for Mira/SR stars. This may indicate the region of the
transition between two types of oscillations as we move upward along the giant

Multi-Periodic Oscillations in Cepheids and RR Lyrae-Type Stars
Classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae-type stars are usually considered to be
textbook examples of purely radial, strictly periodic pulsators. Not all the
variables, however, conform to this simple picture. In this review I discuss
different forms of multi-periodicity observed in Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars,
including Blazhko effect and various types of radial and nonradial multi-mode

Adenoviruses of the most ancient primate lineages support the theory on virusâhost co-evolution
The scarcity or complete lack of information on the adenoviruses (AdVs) occurring in the most ancient non-human primates resulted in the initiation of a study for exploring their abundance and diversity in prosimians and New World monkeys (NWMs). In order to assess the variability of these AdVs and the possible signs of the hypothesised virusâhost co-evolution, samples from almost every family of NWMs and prosimians were screened for the presence of AdVs. A PCRscreening of 171 faecal or organ samples from live or dead, captive or wild-living prosimians and NWMs was performed. The PCR products from the gene of the IVa2 protein were sequenced and used in phylogeny calculations. The presence of 10 and 15 new AdVs in seven and ten different species of prosimians and NWMs was revealed, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the tentative novel AdVs cluster into two separate groups, which form the most basal branches among the primate AdVs, and therefore support the theory on the co-evolution of primate AdVs with their hosts. This is the first report that provides a comprehensive overview of the AdVs occurring in prosimians and NWMs, and the first insight into the evolutionary relationships among AdVs from all major primate groups
