    The validity of birth and pregnancy histories in rural Bangladesh

    Background: Maternity histories provide a means of estimating fertility and mortality from surveys. Methods: The present analysis compares two types of maternity histories\u2014birth histories and pregnancy histories\u2014in three respects: (1) completeness of live birth and infant death reporting; (2) accuracy of the time placement of live births and infant deaths; and (3) the degree to which reported versus actual total fertility measures differ. The analysis covers a 15-year time span and is based on two data sources from Matlab, Bangladesh: the 1994 Matlab Demographic and Health Survey and, as gold standard, the vital events data from Matlab\u2019s Demographic Surveillance System. Results: Both histories are near perfect in live-birth completeness; however, pregnancy histories do better in the completeness and time accuracy of deaths during the first year of life. Conclusions: Birth or pregnancy histories can be used for fertility estimation, but pregnancy histories are advised for estimating infant mortality

    The Status of Women in Kansas: A Summary Report to United WE

    United WE commissioned researchers from the Center for Science Technology & Economic Policy at the Institute for Policy & Social Research at the University of Kansas to study the socioeconomic status of women in Kansas. The report also highlights the status of women in the Kansas City metro area (KC Metro). We compare outcomes of women and men across many social and economic indicators: demographics, income, employment, childcare, poverty, and civic engagement. We include several layers of geographic comparisons: Kansas with the U.S., the KC metro with other Midwestern metropolitan areas, and, for some outcomes, individual Kansas counties with the state average. Our report also addresses the differential impact of the COVID-19 recession on Kansas women. Overall, our report paints a statistical portrait of the status of women in Kansas

    Isolation of Possible Biocontrol Endophytic Bacteria from Solanum tuberosum Effective Against Streptomyces scabies.

    Use of biological control offers a cost effective and environmentally safe method for controlling plant diseases. Biocontrol agents that can colonize roots and live endophytically within plant tissue should allow for effective disease control. The goal of this research was to develop protocols to isolate putative Streptomyces species from potato stem and tuber tissue due to their ability to produce inhibitory compounds which could potentially reduce diseases caused by Streptomyces scabies. Endophyte isolation from Solanum tuberosum (potato) plants (stem and tuber tissues) that were grown in a biocontrol field trial were the focus of this study. Several surface sterilization processes were assessed and two different tissue-processing methods were focused on to obtain endophytes: 1) excising cross-sections of stem tissue and 2) use of a maceration technique for tuber and stem tissue. From the stem tissue, four putative Streptomyces species were isolated; one of the four isolates was inhibitory to Streptomyces scabies in agar plate bioassays. To date, two putative Streptomyces species and several other bacterial species were isolated from tuber tissue. Further characterization of these isolates are underway with the goal of discovering endophytic pathogen-inhibiting bacteria that could then be used in concert with soil-dwelling biocontrol agents to enhance disease control of the potato scab pathogen

    Use of Two Pathogen-inhibiting Streptomyces Isolates for Biocontrol of Scab Disease of Raphanus sativus

    Streptomyces species are ubiquitous soil bacteria that are promising as biological control agents due to their prolific antibiotic production that can inhibit soil-borne plant pathogens. This includes Streptomyces scabies, which causes scab disease on underground storage organs. The goal of this research was to test two Streptomyces isolates that have known inhibitory and biocontrol abilities against S. scabies in a potato (Solanum tuberosum) agricultural system for their effectiveness in biocontrol of this pathogen in a radish (Raphanus sativus) greenhouse assay. Pathogenic S. scabies were mixed into either pasteurized or unpasteurized soil prior to planting. Radish seeds or radish roots were soaked in a spore suspension of the two biocontrol Streptomyces isolates. Controls of treatments without the pathogen and the biocontrol Streptomyces were included. Radish plants were grown to maturity. Upon harvesting, the radish taproot was rated for scab disease and tuber weight and length were determined. Disease levels were reduced in the presence of the two biocontrol Streptomyces. Taproot weight was greater in the treatments that included the biocontrol Streptomyces. In addition, evidence was sought to determine the ability of these Streptomyces isolates and other pathogen-inhibiting bacteria to enter into an endophytic relationship with the radish plant. For this, several protocols were assessed to try to optimize the isolation of endophytic bacteria from stem and taproot tissue. Surface-sterilized tissue sections (stem and taproot) or macerated stem tissue spread on agar plates have indicated the presence of several bacterial endophytes, including two putative Streptomycete isolates from the stem tissue sections. The search for additional endophytic bacteria capable of inhibiting the scab pathogen are currently underway.     Basic Conditioning Factors' Influences on Adolescents' Healthy Behaviors, Self-Efficacy, and Self-Care

    This article reports a secondary statistical analysis of data from a study investigating the relationships among health-promoting self-care behaviors, self-care self-efficacy, and self-care agency in an adolescent population (Callaghan, 2005). The purpose of this study was to identify the influences of selected basic conditioning factors on the practice of healthy behaviors, self-efficacy beliefs, and ability for self-care in 256 adolescents. The research instruments used to collect data for this study include: Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II Scale; Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scale; Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale; demographic questionnaire assessing basic conditioning factors. The results of this analysis identified significant relationships between the following basic conditioning factors and adolescents' practice of healthy behaviors, self-efficacy of those behaviors, and self-care abilities: support system, adequate income, adequate living conditions, gender, routine practice of religion, and reported medical problems/disabilities. These findings can give adolescent health nurses direction in developing interventions that promote the self-care and health in this specific population

    Analysis of Sex-Specific Prostanoid Production Using a Mouse Model of Selective Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibition

    Background: Prostanoids are a family of lipid mediators formed from arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenase enzymes and serve as biomarkers of vascular function. Prostanoid production may be different in males and females indicating that different therapeutic approaches may be required during disease. Objecti ves: We examined sex-dependent differences in COX-related metabolites in genetically modified mice that produce a cyclooxygenase- 2 (COX2) enzyme containing a tyrosine 385 to phenylalanine (Y385F) mutation. This mutation renders the COX2 enzyme unable to form a key intermediate radical required for complete arachidonic acid metabolism and provides a model of selective COX2 inhibition. Design and Methods: Mice heterozygous for the Y385F mutation in COX2 were mated to produce cohorts of wild-type, heterozygous, and COX2 mutant mice. We investigated whether the genotype distribution followed Mendelian genetics and studied whether sex-specific differences could be found in certain prostanoid levels measured in peritoneal macrophages and in urinary samples. Results : The inheritance of the COX2 mutation displayed a significant deviation with respect to Mendel’s laws of genetics, with a lowerthan- expected progeny of weaned COX2 mutant pups. In macrophages, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production following lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon gamma (IFNγ) stimulation was COX2-dependent in both males and females, and data indicated that crosstalk between the nitric oxide (NO) and COX2 pathways may be sex specific. We observed significant differences in urinary PGE2 production by male and female COX2 mutant mice, with the loss of COX2 activity in male mice decreasing their ability to produce urinary PGE2. Finally, female mice across all 3 genotypes produced similar levels of urinary thromboxane (measured as 11-dehydro TxB2) at significantly higher levels than males, indicating a sex-related difference that is likely COX1-derived. Conclusions: Our findings clearly demonstrate that sex-related differences in COX-derived metabolites can be observed, and that other pathways (such as the NO pathway) are affected

    Developing, monitoring, and reporting of fidelity in aphasia trials: Core recommendations from the collaboration of aphasia trialists (CATs) trials for aphasia panel

    Background: Developing, monitoring, and reporting of fidelity are essential and integral components to the design of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in stroke and aphasia. Treatment fidelity refers to the degree to which an intervention is delivered as intended and is directly related to the quality of the evidence generated by RCTs. Clear documentation of treatment fidelity in trials assists in the evaluation of the clinical implications of potential benefits attributed to the intervention. Consideration of the implementation requirements of a research-based intervention as intended in a clinical context is necessary to achieve similar outcomes for a clinical population. Despite this, treatment fidelity is rarely reported in RCTs of aphasia intervention. Aim: To describe fidelity strategies and develop core recommendations for developing, monitoring, and reporting of fidelity in aphasia intervention RCTs. Scope: Relevant conceptual frameworks were considered. The Behaviour Change Consortium comprehensive framework of fidelity was adopted. It includes five areas: study design, training providers, delivery of treatment, treatment receipt, and treatment enactment. We explored fidelity in RCTs with a range of complex aphasia interventions (e.g., ASK, Big CACTUS, COMPARE, FCET2EC, POLAR, SUPERB, and VERSE) and described how different trial design factors (e.g., phase of trial, explanatory vs. pragmatic, number and location of sites, and number and type of treatment providers) influenced the fidelity strategies chosen. Strategies were mapped onto the five areas of the fidelity framework with a detailed exploration of how fidelity criteria were developed, measured, and monitored throughout each trial. This information was synthesised into a set of core recommendations to guide aphasia researchers towards the adequate measurement, capture, and reporting of fidelity within future aphasia intervention studies. Conclusions/Recommendations: Treatment fidelity should be a core consideration in planning an intervention trial, a concept that goes beyond treatment adherence alone. A range of strategies should be selected depending on the phase and design of the trial being undertaken and appropriate investment of time and costs should be considered
