Synchronization of medial temporal lobe and prefrontal rhythms in human decision-making
Optimal decision making requires that we integrate mnemonic information regarding previous decisions with value signals that entail likely rewards and punishments. The fact that memory and value signals appear to be coded by segregated brain regions, the hippocampus in the case of memory and sectors of prefrontal cortex in the case of value, raises the question as to how they are integrated during human decision making. Using magnetoencephalography to study healthy human participants, we show increased theta oscillations over frontal and temporal sensors during nonspatial decisions based on memories from previous trials. Using source reconstruction we found that the medial temporal lobe (MTL), in a location compatible with the anterior hippocampus, and the anterior cingulate cortex in the medial wall of the frontal lobe are the source of this increased theta power. Moreover, we observed a correlation between theta power in the MTL source and behavioral performance in decision making, supporting a role for MTL theta oscillations in decision-making performance. These MTL theta oscillations were synchronized with several prefrontal sources, including lateral superior frontal gyrus, dorsal anterior cingulate gyrus, and medial frontopolar cortex. There was no relationship between the strength of synchronization and the expected value of choices. Our results indicate a mnemonic guidance of human decision making, beyond anticipation of expected reward, is supported by hippocampal–prefrontal theta synchronization
The effect of small bowel transplantation on the morphology and physiology of intestinal muscle: A comparison of autografts versus allografts in dogs
The effects of acute (AR) and chronic rejection (CR) on intestinal smooth muscle that are responsible for the dysmotility following small bowel transplantation (SBTX) are incompletely understood. Jejunal and ileal specimens from normal control dogs (n=7), and autotransplanted dogs were examined at 7 days (n=6) and 1 (n=7), 3 (n=6), 6 (n=6), and 12 months (n=6). Allotransplanted dogs that developed AR (n=8) and CR (n=5) were examined for gross and microscopic morphology (muscle thickness, the number and size of myocytes, and inflammatory infiltrate), and for contractile and intracellular electrical function in vitro. Auto-SBTX did not alter morphology at any period, but contractile function was impaired at 7 days (73.6%) compared with normal intestine. Acute rejection did not influence myocyte number or size, but was associated with a prominent infiltrate of neutrophils and lymphocytes, and severely impaired contractile function (20.6%) compared with auto-SBTX controls. Acute rejection also significantly inhibited the amplitude of slow waves and of inhibitory junction potentials. Chronic rejection caused thickening of muscularis propria by both hyperplasia (175.5%) and hypertrophy (202.6%) accompanied by moderate inflammatory cell infiltrate compared with auto-SBTX controls. We conclude that the marked inflammatory infiltrate into the muscularis propria indicates that the graft muscle is injured by both acute and chronic rejection; impaired function of intestinal smooth muscle following SBTX results from both rejection and the injury associated with transplantation, and chronic rejection following SBTX is associated with both hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the muscularis propria
Internet-based psychoeducation for bipolar disorder: a qualitative analysis of feasibility, acceptability and impact
<p>Background: In a recent exploratory randomised trial we found that a novel, internet-based psychoeducation programme for bipolar disorder (Beating Bipolar) was relatively easy to deliver and had a modest effect on psychological quality of life. We sought to explore the experiences of participants with respect to feasibility, acceptability and impact of Beating Bipolar.</p>
<p>Methods: Participants were invited to take part in a semi-structured interview. Thematic analysis techniques were employed; to explore and describe participants’ experiences, the data were analysed for emerging themes which were identified and coded.</p>
<p>Results: The programme was feasible to deliver and acceptable to participants where they felt comfortable using a computer. It was found to impact upon insight into illness, health behaviour, personal routines and positive attitudes towards medication. Many participants regarded the programme as likely to be most beneficial for those recently diagnosed.</p>
<p>Conclusions: An online psychoeducation package for bipolar disorder, such as Beating Bipolar, is feasible and acceptable to patients, has a positive impact on self-management behaviours and may be particularly suited to early intervention. Alternative (non-internet) formats should also be made available to patients.</p>
Supersymmetric contributions to and decays in SCET
We study the decay modes and using Soft Collinear Effective Theory. Within Standard Model and
including the error due to the SU(3) breaking effect in the SCET parameters we
find that BR and BR
corresponding to
solution 1 and solution 2 of the SCET parameters respectively.For the decay
mode , we find that BR and BR corresponding to solution 1 and
solution 2 of the SCET parameters respectively. We extend our study to include
supersymmetric models with non-universal A-terms where the dominant
contributions arise from diagrams mediated by gluino and chargino exchanges. We
show that gluino contributions can not lead to an enhancement of the branching
ratios of and . In
addition, we show that SUSY contributions mediated by chargino exchange can
enhance the branching ratio of by about 14% with
respect to the SM prediction. For the branching ratio of , we find that SUSY contributions can enhance its value by about 1% with

Intergenerational change and familial aggregation of body mass index
The relationship between parental BMI and that of their adult offspring, when increased adiposity can become a clinical issue, is unknown. We investigated the intergenerational change in body mass index (BMI) distribution, and examined the sex-specific relationship
between parental and adult offspring BMI. Intergenerational
change in the distribution of adjusted BMI in 1,443
complete families (both parents and at least one offspring)
with 2,286 offspring (1,263 daughters and 1,023 sons) from
the west of Scotland, UK, was investigated using quantile
regression. Familial correlations were estimated from
linear mixed effects regression models. The distribution
of BMI showed little intergenerational change in the normal
range (\25 kg/m2), decreasing overweightness (25–
\30 kg/m2) and increasing obesity (C30 kg/m2). Median
BMI was static across generations in males and decreased
in females by 0.4 (95% CI: 0.0, 0.7) kg/m2; the 95th percentileincreased by 2.2 (1.1, 3.2) kg/m2 in males and 2.7
(1.4, 3.9) kg/m2 in females. Mothers’ BMI was more
strongly associated with daughters’ BMI than was fathers’
(correlation coefficient (95% CI): mothers 0.31 (0.27,
0.36), fathers 0.19 (0.14, 0.25); P = 0.001). Mothers’ and
fathers’ BMI were equally correlated with sons’ BMI
(correlation coefficient: mothers 0.28 (0.22, 0.33), fathers
0.27 (0.22, 0.33). The increase in BMI between generations
was concentrated at the upper end of the distribution. This,
alongside the strong parent-offspring correlation, suggests that the increase in BMI is disproportionally greater among
offspring of heavier parents. Familial influences on BMI among middle-aged women appear significantly stronger from mothers than father
The origin of defects induced in ultra-pure germanium by Electron Beam Deposition
The creation of point defects in the crystal lattices of various
semiconductors by subthreshold events has been reported on by a number of
groups. These observations have been made in great detail using sensitive
electrical techniques but there is still much that needs to be clarified.
Experiments using Ge and Si were performed that demonstrate that energetic
particles, the products of collisions in the electron beam, were responsible
for the majority of electron-beam deposition (EBD) induced defects in a
two-step energy transfer process. Lowering the number of collisions of these
energetic particles with the semiconductor during metal deposition was
accomplished using a combination of static shields and superior vacuum
resulting in devices with defect concentrations lower than cm, the measurement limit of our deep level transient
spectroscopy (DLTS) system. High energy electrons and photons that samples are
typically exposed to were not influenced by the shields as most of these
particles originate at the metal target thus eliminating these particles as
possible damage causing agents. It remains unclear how packets of energy that
can sometimes be as small of 2eV travel up to a m into the material while
still retaining enough energy, that is, in the order of 1eV, to cause changes
in the crystal. The manipulation of this defect causing phenomenon may hold the
