Corticospinal Inputs to Primate Motoneurons Innervatingthe Forelimb from Two Divisions of Primary Motor Cortexand Area 3a
Previous anatomical work in primates has suggested that only corticospinal axons originating in caudal primary motor cortex (ânewM1â) and area 3a make monosynaptic cortico-otoneuronal connections with limb motoneurons.By contrast, the more rostral âold M1â is proposed to control motoneurons disynaptically via spinal interneurons. In six macaque monkeys, we examined the effects from focal stimulation within old and new M1 and area 3a on 135 antidromically identified motoneurons projecting to the upper limb. EPSPs withsegmental latency shorter than 1.2 ms were classified as definitively monosynaptic; these were seen only after stimulation within new M1or at the new M1/3a border (incidence 6.6% and 1.3%, respectively; total n=27). However, most responses had longer latencies. Usingmeasures of the response facilitation after a second stimulus compared with the first, and the reduction in response latency after a third stimulus compared with the first, we classified these late responses as likely mediated by either long-latency monosynaptic (n=108) ornon-monosynaptic linkages (n=108). Both old and new M1 generated putative long-latency monosynaptic and non-monosynaptic effects; the majority of responses from area 3a were non-monosynaptic. Both types of responses from new M1 had significantly greateramplitude than those from old M1. We suggest that slowly conducting corticospinal fibers from old M1 generate weak late monosynaptic effects in motoneurons. These may represent a stage in control of primate motoneurons by the cortex intermediate between disynapticoutput via an interposed interneuron seen in nonprimates and the fast direct monosynaptic connections present in new M1.This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust
Timescale Dependence in River Channel Migration Measurements
Accurately measuring river meander migration over time is critical for sediment budgets and understanding how rivers respond to changes in hydrology or sediment supply. However, estimates of meander migration rates or streambank contributions to sediment budgets using repeat aerial imagery, maps, or topographic data will be underestimated without proper accounting for channel reversal. Furthermore, comparing channel planform adjustment measured over dissimilar timescales are biased because shortâ and longâterm measurements are disproportionately affected by temporary rate variability, longâterm hiatuses, and channel reversals. We evaluate the role of timescale dependence for the Root River, a single threaded meandering sandâ and gravelâbedded river in southeastern Minnesota, USA, with 76 years of aerial photographs spanning an era of landscape changes that have drastically altered flows.
Empirical data and results from a statistical river migration model both confirm a temporal measurementâscale dependence, illustrated by systematic underestimations (2â15% at 50 years) and convergence of migration rates measured over sufficiently long timescales (\u3e 40 years). Frequency of channel reversals exerts primary control on measurement bias for longer time intervals by erasing the record of observable migration. We conclude that using longâterm measurements of channel migration for sediment remobilization projections, streambank contributions to sediment budgets, sediment flux estimates, and perceptions of fluvial change will necessarily underestimate such calculations. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
Consenting to health record linkage: evidence from a multi-purpose longitudinal survey of a general population
Background: The British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) is the first long-running UK longitudinal survey with a non-medical focus and a sample covering the whole age range to have asked for permission to link to a range of administrative health records. This study determines whether informed consent led to selection bias and reflects on the value of the BHPS linked with health records for epidemiological research. Methods. Multivariate logistical regression is used, with whether the respondent gave consent to data linkage or not as the dependent variable. Independent variables were entered as four blocks; (i) a set of standard demographics likely to be found in most health registration data, (ii) a broader set of socio-economic characteristics, (iii) a set of indicators of health conditions and (iv) information about the use of health services. Results: Participants aged 16-24, males and those living in England were more likely to consent. Consent is not biased with respect to socio-economic characteristics or health. Recent users of GP services are underrepresented among consenters. Conclusions: Whilst data could only be linked for a minority of BHPS participants, the BHPS offers a great range of information on people's life histories, their attitudes and behaviours making it an invaluable source for epidemiological research. © 2012 Knies et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
Stoichiometrically driven disorder and local diffusion in NMC cathodes
Major structural differences in lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxides (NMC) prepared under identical conditions have been uncovered using neutron powder diffraction. Sample NMC-622 was obtained as a single R[3 with combining macron]m crystal structure with little defects, whereas NMC-811 showed significant Li deficiency and NMC-433 formed three distinct phases; ordered R[3 with combining macron]m, disordered R[3 with combining macron]m and a C2/m phase. Local diffusion behaviour was also studied by muon spin relaxation (ÎŒSR). It was observed that single phase R[3 with combining macron]m NMC-622 showed a higher lithium diffusion coefficient (4.4 Ă 10â11 cm2 sâ1) compared to lithium deficient NMC-811 (2.9 Ă 10â11 cm2 sâ1), or the highly disordered NMC-433 (3.4 Ă 10â11 cm2 sâ1). Furthermore, activation energies for the Li diffusion process were estimated to be 58 meV, 61 meV and 28 meV for NMC-811, NMC-622 and NMC-433, respectively
Multiple diffusion pathways in LixNi0.77Co0.14Al0.09O2 (NCA) Li-ion battery cathodes
Experimental evidence for the presence of two computationally theorised diffusion pathways, namely the oxygen dumbbell hop (ODH) and tetrahedral site hop (TSH), has been given for the first time by muon spin relaxation (”SR) on sub-stoichiometric LixNi0.77Co0.14Al0.09O2. ”SR has proven to be a powerful tool that is able to discriminate between diffusion pathways that occur on different timescales on a local level, where bulk electrochemical techniques cannot. Whereas the estimated values of DLi at lithium concentrations of 0.87 and 0.71 were found to be on the order of 10-11 by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, contributions to diffusion from ODH and TSH were determined to be on the order of 10-11 and 10-10 cm2 s-1, and a factor of four decrease in Ea for both samples, in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations on related compounds. Rietveld refinement of both X-ray and neutron diffraction data was also used to interrogate the local structure of the materials where no contribution from Li+/Ni2+ cation mixing was observed

Firms' Main Market, Human Capital and Wages
Recent international trade literature emphasizes two features in characterizing the current patterns of trade: efficiency heterogeneity at the firm level and quality differentiation. This paper explores human capital and wage differences across firms in that context. We build a partial equilibrium model predicting that firms selling in more-remote markets employ higher human capital and pay higher wages to employees within each education group. The channel linking these variables is firmsâ endogenous choice of quality. Predictions are tested using Spanish employer-employee matched data that classify firms according to four main destination markets: local, national, European Union, and rest of the World. Employeesâ average education is increasing in the remoteness of firmâs main output market. Marketâdestination wage premia are large, increasing in the remoteness of the market, and increasing in individual education. These results suggest that increasing globalization may play a significant role in raising wage inequality within and across education groups
