The relationship between trade openness, foreign direct investment and growth: Case of Malaysia

    Get PDF
This study examines the role of trade openness and foreign direct investment in influencing economic growth in Malaysia during 1975-2005, using the Bounds testing approach suggested by Pesaran et al. (2001). The empirical results demonstrate that trade openness is positively associated and statistically significant determinant of growth, both in short run and the long run. The result also suggested that foreign direct investment is positively associated in the short run and negatively associated in the long run, both significantly. Besides these two variables, the other control variable namely exchange rate is also significant in the short run as well as in the long run.trade openness; foreign direct investment; economic growth; Malaysia

Causation analysis between stock price and exchange rate: Pre and post crisis study on Malaysia

The furore and chaos created by the Asian financial crisis have ignited many studies on numerous subjects, and it is believed that the crisis has changed the way nations being administered and policies formed and implemented especially those regarding monetary and fiscal policies. Johansen (1991) cointegration method was used and the period was divided into two sub periods, albeit pre crisis and post crisis. The results obtained are similar with a number of past literatures pointing to no long run relationship between stock price and exchange rate for both periods.Stock price, exchange rate, Asian financial crisis, Cointegration

Convergence of violent crime in the United States: Time series test of nonlinear

    Get PDF
This study examines the violent crime convergence among the fifty one states in the United States. The chosen method for this analysis is nonlinear unit root test due to Kapetanios et al. (KSS, 2003), which was later extended by Chong et al. (CHLL, 2008). KSS-CHLL nonlinear unit root was applied for the test of nonlinear convergence among the fifty one states with respect to the national average for the period 1960 to 2007. Result of the study indicates that eight cases of long run converging, two cases of catching up, while the remainder forty one are diverging from the national average.convergence of crime; united states; non-linear

Totem-pole bridgeless boost PFC rectifier using series-parallel resonant network

A new series-parallel resonant bridgeless boost (SPBBR) power factor correction (PFC) rectifier is proposed in this paper. It is based on a totem-pole bridgeless boost (TPBLB) configuration which allows bi-directional current to flow during resonance to provide soft-switching for all semiconductor devices. Therefore, no additional active switch is needed. The resonant is produced by a resonant network which is placed before the output capacitor. A detailed analysis of the converter operation and control is presented. Design considerations and parameter values determination are also given. Simulation results is used to verify the theoretical analysis of the SPBBR

Yaw Rate and Sideslip Control using PID Controller for Double Lane Changing

Vehicle behavior and stability can be observed through the computer simulation using mathematical modeling approach consist the configuration of vehicle multibody system. This paper presents the estimation and control of the yaw rate and sideslip through vehicle lateral dynamic model with a PID controller. The stability analysis is conducted to a single-input-two-outputs (SITO) plant of front-steering-only vehicle model to observe the system response during double lane changing maneuver with constant speeds of 40 km/h and 90 km/h. Results show that a single-input-single-output (SISO) PID controller able to enhance the cornering limit by reducing the sideslip and optimized the yaw rate, especially for slow speed vehicle in order to maintain its stability states

The economic antecedents of human well being: a pooled mean group estimation of dynamic heterogeneous panel

    Get PDF
This study seeks to investigate the economic antecedents of happiness by employing the Mean Group (MG), Pooled Mean Group (PMG) and the Dynamic Fixed Effects (DFE) estimators to analyse a set of macro panel data on selected OECD countries for 40 years from 1973 to 2012. The results show evidence that income and unemployment have a favourable impact on happiness, while happiness is hindered by inflation and income inequality. Surprisingly, the study revealed that institutional quality is not a significant antecedent of happiness. It is worth noting the importance of the reference group theory or relative theory of happiness and the set-point theory of happiness in explaining the role played by income, unemployment, inflation, income inequality and institutional quality in explaining human well-being

Determination of the melting layer from meteorological radar data in Malaysia

    Get PDF
A developed algorithm based on the vertical profile of radar reflectivity, has been applied to determine the boundaries of the melting layer and its thickness. The average values of the melting layer heights are compared with ITU-R recommendations and other obtained results in tropical regions at 500m resolution range. The results obtained showed lower values for heights of the melting layer

Safety compliance for hihg rise projects in Nigerian construction Industry

Health and safety issues had always been a major challenge and concern in the construction industry. Construction is found to be one of the most dangerous on health and safety practice, predominantly in developing countries. As construction accidents continue to dominate the overall construction industry. Despite the programs implemented by government and measures introduced by companies the number of high rise construction accidents still remains alarmingly. This research aim to investigate the safety compliance for high rise construction project in Nigeria. In achieving this aim three (3) objectives has been outlined; to investigate the current level of compliance to safety practice and policies in Nigerian construction site. To investigate the factors that prevent the compliance to safety and health practices in high rise projects of Nigerian construction industry. To recommend appropriate ways to improve the compliance to safety in high rise of Nigerian construction. The interview and questionnaire method was used in this research. Structured Questionnaires was distributed to 108 potential respondents from the construction industry players 90 was returned and Qualitative interview have been conducted to meet the first objective of the project, to investigate the current level of compliance to safety practice In addition, structured interviews were carried out with selected managers from construction industry. The result shows that Bribery and corruption, Lack of training, Absence of safety representatives, Lack of corporate responsibility & Accountability, Weak legal structure were the significant factors affecting safety. Compliance. The result also indicate that Site inspection, Safety seminars (enforcement officers), Building codes of practice, Enforcement of safety act, Workers/labourers training are the effective factors that could improve compliance to safety practice in high rise project of Nigerian construction industry. It is recommended that relevant authorities should checkmate the Safety practices in the Nigerian construction industry
