    Collaborative semantic web browsing with Magpie

    Web browsing is often a collaborative activity. Users involved in a joint information gathering exercise will wish to share knowledge about the web pages visited and the contents found. Magpie is a suite of tools supporting the interpretation of web pages and semantically enriched web browsing. By automatically associating an ontology-based semantic layer to web resources, Magpie allows relevant services to be invoked as well as remotely triggered within a standard web browser. In this paper we describe how Magpie trigger services can provide semantic support to collaborative browsing activities

    Approaches to Semantic Web Services: An Overview and Comparison

    Abstract. The next Web generation promises to deliver Semantic Web Services (SWS); services that are self-described and amenable to automated discovery, composition and invocation. A prerequisite to this, however, is the emergence and evolution of the Semantic Web, which provides the infrastructure for the semantic interoperability of Web Services. Web Services will be augmented with rich formal descriptions of their capabilities, such that they can be utilized by applications or other services without human assistance or highly constrained agreements on interfaces or protocols. Thus, Semantic Web Services have the potential to change the way knowledge and business services are consumed and provided on the Web. In this paper, we survey the state of the art of current enabling technologies for Semantic Web Services. In addition, we characterize the infrastructure of Semantic Web Services along three orthogonal dimensions: activities, architecture and service ontology. Further, we examine and contrast three current approaches to SWS according to the proposed dimensions

    Classical analogy for the deflection of flux avalanches by a metallic layer

    Sudden avalanches of magnetic flux bursting into a superconducting sample undergo deflections of their trajectories when encountering a conductive layer deposited on top of the superconductor. Remarkably, in some cases flux is totally excluded from the area covered by the conductive layer. We present a simple classical model that accounts for this behaviour and considers a magnetic monopole approaching a semi-infinite conductive plane. This model suggests that magnetic braking is an important mechanism responsible for avalanche deflection.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    A GEANT-based study of atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters at INO

    We have studied the dependence of the allowed space of the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters on the time of exposure for a magnetized Iron CALorimeter (ICAL) detector at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO). We have performed a Monte Carlo simulation for a 50 kTon ICAL detector generating events by the neutrino generator NUANCE and simulating the detector response by GEANT. A chi-square analysis for the ratio of the up-going and down-going neutrinos as a function of L/EL/E is performed and the allowed regions at 90% and 99% CL are displayed. These results are found to be better than the current experimental results of MINOS and Super-K.     Equatorial ozone characteristics as measured at Natal (5.9 deg S, 35.2 deg W)

    Ozone density profiles obtained through electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) sonde measurements at Natal were analyzed. Time variations, as expected, are small. Outstanding features of the data are tropospheric densities substantially higher than those measured at other stations, and also a total ozone content that is higher than the averages given by satellite measurements

    Modelling of waste heat recovery of a biomass combustion plant through ground source heat pumps- development of an efficient numerical framework

    Development of a reliable and convenient dynamic modelling approach for ground source heat pumps remains as an important unresolved issue. As a remedy, in this work a novel, computationally-efficient modelling framework is developed and rigorously validated. This is based upon an implicit computational modelling approach of the ground together with an empirical modelling of heat and fluid flow inside U-tube ground heat exchangers and waste heat calculations. The coupled governing equations are solved simultaneously and the influences of parameters on the performance of the whole system are evaluated. The outcomes of the developed framework are, first, favorably compared against two different existing cases in the literature. Subsequently, the underground storage and recovery process of the waste heat through flue gases generated by a biomass combustion plant are modelled numerically. This reveals the history of temperature distributions in the ground under different configurations of the system. The results show that for a biomass combustion plant generating flue gases at 485.9 K as waste heat with the mass flow rate of 0.773 kg/s, the extracted heat from the ground is increase by 7.6%, 14.4% and 23.7% per unit length of the borehole corresponding to 40 °C, 50 °C and 60 °C storage temperatures. It is further shown that the proposed storage system can recover a significant fraction of the thermal energy otherwise wasted to the atmosphere. Hence, it practically offers a sizable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

    Comparison of in situ devices for the assessment of pavement subgrade stiffness

    The subgrade is the top surface of a roadbed upon which the pavement structure is constructed. The purpose is to provide a platform for construction of the pavement and to support the pavement without unwanted deflection that would reduce its performance. For those reasons subgrade bearing capacity have to be investigate during the construction process as a quality control, based on the design results. The dynamic in situ Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests are nowadays widely used and considered the most reliable and suitable approach to determine bearing capacity of road pavements and elastic moduli. In addition, the use of the Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD) takes the advantage of the dynamic application of load, and the flexibility of the handling of the equipment on construction area and unbound layer. In the present paper, a wide literature review is presented on the topic of correlation between different subgrade bearing capacity in situ tests. In order to assess the transferability of LWD measures, these results were compared with FWD test and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) test. Soil samples, taken from the site, have also been investigate in laboratory to relate geotechnical and in situ test results

    Supracricoid Partial Laryngectomy: Oncological and Functional Outcomes

    Introduction In the present study, we have reviewed the outcomes of patients with supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) in our institution. Our results show that SCPL is a well-tolerated procedure with generally good functional outcomes for patients with advanced laryngeal cancer. Objective We analyzed the oncological and functional results of a cohort of 35 patients who had undergone SCPL, and we highlighted the complications, identified the overall and disease-free survivals, demonstrating that the reconstructive laryngectomy guarantees the oncological safety and reproducibility of the oncological results, preserving the laryngeal functions and promoting an improvement in the patient's quality of life, favoring communication and interpersonal relationships. Methods Between 2010 and 2018, 35 patients underwent SCPL for primary and recurrent laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas, and they were divided into two subgroups: in 16 cases, the cricohyoidoepiglottopexy according to the Mayer-Piquet technique was performed, while the remaining 19 cases were submitted to the cricohyoidopexy according to the Labayle technique. In addition to evaluating the oncological results of patients undergoing reconstructive laryngectomy, the present study also aimed to evaluate the functionality of the residual larynx and the quality of life. Results The overall and disease-free survivals were of 83% and 76.3% respectively. All patients were able to swallow. The nasogastric tube was removed after a mean period of 21.8 days (range: 14 to 28 days). The mean decannulation time was of 23.4 days after surgery (range: 15 to 36 days). Conclusion The curves for the overall and disease-free survivals show that SCPL can guarantee oncological safety comparable to that of total laryngectomies in diseases in the intermediate stage and in carefully-selected advanced stages
