The geography fieldwork experience: Spain 2008
In the last week of April, Dr Tony Mellor and five colleagues from the School of Applied Sciences took 34 Geography students on field work to Andalucia in southern Spain. This residential trip takes place annually as part of a core module on the second year of the BSc (Hons) Geography degree programme. The module enables students to: (a) apply skills of observation, measurement and data collection in a real world field context, (b) demonstrate skills in project design, report writing, oral presentation and group work, and (c) describe and interpret physical and environmental processes operating in the study area and discuss howthey contribute to the distinctiveness of its landscapes
Verified AIG Algorithms in ACL2
And-Inverter Graphs (AIGs) are a popular way to represent Boolean functions
(like circuits). AIG simplification algorithms can dramatically reduce an AIG,
and play an important role in modern hardware verification tools like
equivalence checkers. In practice, these tricky algorithms are implemented with
optimized C or C++ routines with no guarantee of correctness. Meanwhile, many
interactive theorem provers can now employ SAT or SMT solvers to automatically
solve finite goals, but no theorem prover makes use of these advanced,
AIG-based approaches.
We have developed two ways to represent AIGs within the ACL2 theorem prover.
One representation, Hons-AIGs, is especially convenient to use and reason
about. The other, Aignet, is the opposite; it is styled after modern AIG
packages and allows for efficient algorithms. We have implemented functions for
converting between these representations, random vector simulation, conversion
to CNF, etc., and developed reasoning strategies for verifying these
algorithms.
Aside from these contributions towards verifying AIG algorithms, this work
has an immediate, practical benefit for ACL2 users who are using GL to
bit-blast finite ACL2 theorems: they can now optionally trust an off-the-shelf
SAT solver to carry out the proof, instead of using the built-in BDD package.
Looking to the future, it is a first step toward implementing verified AIG

Studentsâ choice of occupational therapy as a second degree
There has been little research in the United Kingdom into the recruitment of
occupational therapy students. This study focused on one aspect and surveyed
students already holding a degree, in order to ascertain the factors that
attracted them to occupational therapy and why they chose a further
3-year degree course in preference to postgraduate alternative routes to
qualification.
Sixty-four students, holding degrees predominantly in the human sciences
and the arts, were motivated to study occupational therapy at Brunel
University through a desire to obtain a vocational qualification and to pursue a
career that helped others and offered variety and personal satisfaction. The
majority of the students learned of the profession through working in health
and social care environments, and chose to study at Brunel University owing to
its location in London and its reputation for attracting mature students.
Although 90% of the students had been aware of the 2-year accelerated
postgraduate diplomas in occupational therapy, more than a third preferred to
undertake a 3-year degree course because it allowed more time for study and
part-time employment.

Background
Pilates is a popular exercise therapy approach offering numerous benefits, including muscular strength, flexibility, control, and core stability. Pilates has been widely utilized in the prevention and rehabilitation of a variety of musculoskeletal disorders.
Objectives
The aim of this study was to explore the experiences and opinions of Pilates trained NHS and private practice physiotherapists in the UK, regarding the perceived benefits, risks, delivery and rationale for this exercise method.
Methods
This qualitative study used a selfâdesigned electronic survey to retrieve the views of 30 physiotherapists, who had undertaken formal Pilates Instruction training, recruited by a purposive and snowball sampling method. Questions were either multiple choice or openâended, examined via thematic analysis.
Results
Physiotherapists identified the most important benefits of Pilates as reduction in fearâavoidance, improving bodily awareness and increasing muscular strength. Exercises that promote general movement were highlighted as being particularly useful, with a majority recommending daily practice for optimum benefit. Participants recognized lack of core strength as a key indicator, whereas others criticized excessive focus on this principle.
Conclusions
Physiotherapists identified a range of interâlinked benefits and recognized that Pilates is hugely modifiable. Individualizing exercises can further encourage participation and negate the restriction of some health conditions. NHS and Private Practice Therapists utilize Pilates in a similar way, although rationales for its use may differ, as the justification for Pilates exercise may be evolving. Evaluation of two mobile health apps in the context of smoking cessation: qualitative study of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) versus non-CBT-based digital solutions.
BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) apps can offer users numerous benefits, representing a feasible and acceptable means of administering health interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is commonly used in the treatment of mental health conditions, where it has a strong evidence base, suggesting that it represents an effective method to elicit health behavior change. More importantly, CBT has proved to be effective in smoking cessation, in the context of smoking-related costs to the National Health Service (NHS) having been estimated to be as high as ÂŁ2.6bn in 2015. Although the evidence base for computerized CBT in mental health is strong, there is limited literature on its use in smoking cessation. This, combined with the cost-effectiveness of mHealth interventions, advocates a need for research into the effectiveness of CBT-based smoking cessation apps. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was, first, to explore participants' perceptions of 2 mHealth apps, a CBT-based app, Quit Genius, and a non-CBT-based app, NHS Smokefree, over a variety of themes. Second, the study aimed to investigate the perceptions and health behavior of users of each app with respect to smoking cessation. METHODS: A qualitative short-term longitudinal study was conducted, using a sample of 29 smokers allocated to one of the 2 apps, Quit Genius or Smokefree. Each user underwent 2 one-to-one semistructured interviews, 1 week apart. Thematic analysis was carried out, and important themes were identified. Descriptive statistics regarding participants' perceptions and health behavior in relation to smoking cessation are also provided. RESULTS: The thematic analysis resulted in five higher themes and several subthemes. Participants were generally more positive about Quit Genius's features, as well as about its design and information engagement and quality. Quit Genius users reported increased motivation to quit smoking, as well as greater willingness to continue using their allocated app after 1 week. Moreover, these participants demonstrated preliminary changes in their smoking behavior, although this was in the context of our limited sample, not yet allowing for the finding to be generalizable. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings underscore the use of CBT in the context of mHealth apps as a feasible and potentially effective smoking cessation tool. mHealth apps must be well developed, preferably with an underlying behavioral change mechanism, to promote positive health behavior change. Digital CBT has the potential to become a powerful tool in overcoming current health care challenges. The present results should be replicated in a wider sample using the apps for a longer period so as to allow for generalizability. Further research is also needed to focus on the effect of greater personalization on behavioral change and on understanding the psychological barriers to the adoption of new mHealth solutions
