    QoS Based Capacity Enhancement for WCDMA Network with Coding Scheme

    The wide-band code division multiple access (WCDMA) based 3G and beyond cellular mobile wireless networks are expected to provide a diverse range of multimedia services to mobile users with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). To serve diverse quality of service requirements of these networks it necessitates new radio resource management strategies for effective utilization of network resources with coding schemes. Call admission control (CAC) is a significant component in wireless networks to guarantee quality of service requirements and also to enhance the network resilience. In this paper capacity enhancement for WCDMA network with convolutional coding scheme is discussed and compared with block code and without coding scheme to achieve a better balance between resource utilization and quality of service provisioning. The model of this network is valid for the real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) services having different data rate. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the network using convolutional code in terms of capacity enhancement and QoS of the voice and video services.Comment: 10 Pages, VLSICS Journa

    Consortium Building For PEM MFC Using Synthetic Media As Substrate

    Microbial production of electricity is an important form of bioenergy since Microbial Fuel cells (MFC) offer the possibility of extracting electric current from a wide range of organic wastes and renewable biomass. Factors affecting the MFC operational effectiveness are the MFC design and the bacterial metabolism and electron transfer. The purpose of this study is to identify species which are responsible for electricity generation so as to build a suitable consortium and to investigate the relative efficiencies between the microbial consortiums. Enrichment by repeated transfer of a bacterial consortium harvested from the anode compartment of a MFC with synthetic media as a substrate increased the output from an initial level of 34 mA to a maximal level of 363 mA. Scanning electron microscope image indicated the enhanced microbial biofilm deposition over the electrode which were not initially detected in the community

    Corporate governance focus on a major issue to analyse whether the Chief Executive Officer of a firm should serve as board chairman is a debatable argument put forward in the changing world. In the wake of economic chaos globally with high-profile collapses of a number of large corporations in the recent years, has forced organisations to alter the composition of their corporate governance. The increase of pressure on corporate boards from enforcement agencies, as well as shareholders, challenges organisations to adopt new strategies and relook into their organisational structure. This article will look at literatures on various arguments put forward on the pros and cons of the CEO duality and its impact on firm effectiveness and performance. An analysis of theories of CG which includes Agency and Stewardship theories will be look into to have a clear picture on whether duality leads to firm effective performances or hinder performance. From the analysis, it can be concluded that there is no right or wrong board structure but generally shareholders and stakeholders are more inclined towards separation of the roles to promote independence and transparency. Although duality or separation may not have any direct linkage to firm performance, separation model promotes a healthier balance to the overall corporate governance of an organisation. A further research will be carried to look at the composition of the board in emerging corporations in gulf countries

    This paper analyzes single server queueing system wherein the arrival units are in batches following compound Poisson process with varying arrival rates for different states. The arrival rates differ for different states like idle state, busy state and vacation period. The server provides service one by one and after completion of a service, the server either takes a vacation of random length with probability p (0 ï‚£ p ï‚£1) or continue to serve the next customer with probability 1-p, if any. Both service time and vacation time follow general distribution. In addition to this one of the customer impatience, balking is also discussed. We have obtained time dependent solution followed by the steady state analysis with some performance measures of our model

    Analysis of Single Server Queueing System With Batch Service Under Multiple Vacations With Loss And Feedback

    Consider a single server queueing system with foxed batch service under multiple vacations with loss and feedback in which the arrival rate ? follows a Poisson process and the service time follows an exponential distribution with parameter ?. Assume that the system initially contain k customers when the server enters the system and starts the service in batch. The concept of feedback is incorporated in this model (i.e) after completion of the service, if this batch of customers dissatisfied then this batch may join the queue with probability q and with probability (1-q) leaves the system. This q is called a feedback probability. After completion of the service if he finds more than k customers in the queue then the first k customers will be taken for service and service will be given as a batch of size k and if he finds less than k customers in the queue then he leaves for a multiple vacation of exponential length ?. The impatient behaviour of customer is also studied in this model (i.e) the arriving customer may join the queue with probability p when the server is busy or in vacation. This probability p is called loss probability. This model is completely solved by constructing the generating function and Rouche’s theorem is applied and we have derived the closed form solutions for probability of number of customers in the queue during the server busy and in vacation. Further we are providing the analytical solution for mean number of customers and variance of the system. Numerical studies have been done for analysis of mean and variance for various values of ?, µ, ?, p, q and k and also various particular cases of this model have been discussed.     MICROBIAL LEACHING OF CHROMIUM FROM SOLIDIFIED WASTE FORMS – A KINETIC STUDY

    In this study, Thiobacillus thiooxidans (T. thiooxidans) was used to study the microbial stability / degradation of cement-based waste forms. The waste forms contained a chromium salt (CrCl3·6H2O), cement and other additives viz., lime and gypsum in two different proportions. The experimental samples of all the simulated waste forms showed evidence of microbial growth as indicated by substantial increase in sulfate. Chromium leached from the waste forms was found to be lowest in cement – lime solidified waste forms (0.061 mg·l-1) and highest in cement gypsum waste forms (0.22 mg·l-1) after 30 days of exposure. These values were lower than the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP), regulatory limit (5 mg·l-1). Model equations based on two shrinking core models (acid dissolution and bulk diffusion model), were used to analyze the kinetics of microbial degradation of cement based waste forms. The bulk diffusion model was observed to fit the data better than the acid dissolution model, as indicated by good correlation coefficients
