    Get PDF

Corneoscleral laceration and ocular burns caused by electronic cigarette explosions

PURPOSE: To report cases of acute globe rupture and bilateral corneal burns from electronic cigarette (EC) explosions. METHODS: Case series. RESULTS: We describe a series of patients with corneal injury caused by EC explosions. Both patients suffered bilateral corneal burns and decreased visual acuity, and one patient sustained a unilateral corneoscleral laceration with prolapsed iris tissue and hyphema. A review of the scientific literature revealed no prior reported cases of ocular injury secondary to EC explosions; however, multiple media and government agency articles describe fires and explosions involving ECs, including at least 4 with ocular injuries. CONCLUSIONS: Given these cases and the number of recent media reports, ECs pose a significant public health risk. Users should be warned regarding the possibility of severe injury, including sight-threatening ocular injuries ranging from corneal burns to full-thickness corneoscleral laceration

The Application of Exercise Prescription Education in Medical Training

    Get PDF
Objective: Physical inactivity is a significant contributor to many acute and chronic medical conditions. While the dangers of physical inactivity are well understood and physicians have a desire to address them, a lack of education in exercise prescription (ERx) may be a barrier to properly prescribing exercise to patients. The aim of this research was to explore the need for ERx education amongst students and physicians in training and determine the effectiveness of ERx didactic. Methods: A one hour curriculum was developed based on the American College of Sports Medicine principles of ERx. Pre- and post-surveys were administered immediately before and after curriculum session to Wayne State School of Medicine medical students and residents to assess perceived ERx education level and confidence levels for prescribing aerobic and anaerobic exercise to patients. Virtual curriculum sessions were held over Zoom. Results: A total of 144 pre-survey and 119 post-survey results were analyzed. Mean perceived ERx education level significantly increased from 4.67/10 + 1.98 to 7.35/10 + 1.56 (P\u3c.001). Mean confidence level discussing PA with patients, ability to answer exercise related questions, confidence level in ability to prescribe aerobic exercise, and ability to prescribe anaerobic exercise significantly increased in all groups and overall (P\u3c.001) Conclusion: A one-hour session to educate medical students and residents on how to write an ERx improved perceived knowledge and confidence in this subject matter. Further study is needed to determine long term knowledge retention and the impact on ERx behavioral practice in a patient care setting

The Conditions of Amplification for Nano Quantum Diodes

    Get PDF
It is well known that nanomaterials are described by quantum laws. In this work quantum treatment for two metal contacts or diodes on a nanoscale was done. A useful expression for the input and output current is found by using the notion of the current density in quantum mechanics. The conditions required by this contact to act as a rectifier and amplifier are discussed. It found that certain restrictions should be imposed on the potential and the wave number for the metal contact to act as an amplifier. This requires the potential barrier to be positive this requires the region of incident current to have work function less than the transmuted one

    Interleukin-2 in Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Has-Been or a Still-Viable Option?

    Get PDF
Modulation of the immune response plays an important role in the natural history of renal cell carcinoma.  Spontaneous regression of metastases has been well documented in a small percentage of patients after they undergo de-bulking nephrectomy without any additional systemic intervention.  The only logical explanation for these observations is “resetting” of the balance between tumor and the host immune system that, having been overwhelmed by the tumor burden, is able to function better after tumor de-bulking.  Attempts to modulate the activity of the immune system “on demand” have included the use of vaccines, cytokines/lymphokines, adoptive cell transfer, monoclonal antibodies and most recently manipulation of immune checkpoint inhibitors.  Here we review the data for infusional interleukin-2 in the management of advanced renal cell carcinoma and its role in current clinical practice

Generation of a Complete Set of Supersymmetric Shape Invariant Potentials from an Euler Equation

    Get PDF
In supersymmetric quantum mechanics, shape invariance is a sufficient condition for solvability. We show that all conventional additive shape invariant superpotentials that are independent of â„Ź\hbar obey two partial differential equations. One of these is equivalent to the one-dimensional Euler equation expressing momentum conservation for inviscid fluid flow, and it is closed by the other. We solve these equations, generate the set of all conventional shape invariant superpotentials, and show that there are no others in this category. We then develop an algorithm for generating all additive shape invariant superpotentials including those that depend on â„Ź\hbar explicitly.Comment: 4 page

An encryption scheme for a secure policy updating

    Get PDF
Abstract: Ciphertext policy attribute based encryption is an encryption technique where the data is encrypted according to an access policy over attributes. Users who have a secret key associated with a set of attributes which satisfy the access policy can decrypt the encrypted data. However, one of the drawbacks of the CP-ABE is that it does not support updating access control policies without decrypting the encrypted data.We present a new variant of the CP-ABE scheme called ciphertext policy attribute based proxy re-encryption (CP-ABPRE). The proposed scheme allows to update the access control policy of the encrypted data without decrypting the ciphertext. The scheme uses a semitrusted entity called proxy to re-encrypt the encrypted data according to a new access control policy such that only users who satisfy the new policy can decrypt the data. The construction of our scheme is based on prime order bilinear groups. We give a formal definition for semantic security and provide a security proof in the generic group model

Project Reach: Implementation of Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Within Integrated Healthcare for Hurricane Harvey Affected Individuals

    Get PDF
Project Reach was established to deliver evidence-based mental healthcare services to children and adults affected by Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. Through Project Reach, an innovative multi-component assessment and treatment service is utilized to identify and treat in integrated healthcare settings both children and adults exhibiting significant behavioral health concerns in Houston. The aim is to provide sustainable, integrated mental health services through primary care and school-based settings to post-Harvey affected individuals whose emotional needs remain unmet. This paper describes the design and implementation of Project Reach as well as special considerations for implementation. The overall goal of Project Reach is to form a platform for expanding integrated services for those affected by Harvey that will maximize behavioral health outcomes while reducing cost and improving access
