    Frequency domain subpixel registration using HOG phase correlation

    We present a novel frequency-domain image registration technique, which employs histograms of oriented gradients providing subpixel estimates. Our method involves image filtering using dense Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), which provides an advanced representation of the images coping with real-world registration problems such as non-overlapping regions and small deformations. The proposed representation retains the orientation information and the corresponding weights in a multi-dimensional representation. Furthermore, due to the overlapping local contrast normalization characteristic of HOG, the proposed Histogram of Oriented Gradients - Phase Correlation (HOG-PC) method improves significantly the estimated motion parameters in small size blocks. Experiments using sequences with and without ground truth including both global and local/multiple motions demonstrate that the proposed method out- performs the state-of-the-art in frequency-domain motion estimation, in the shape of phase correlation, in terms of subpixel accuracy and motion compensation prediction for a range of test material, block sizes and motion scenarios

    Risk Estimation in Robotics and the Impact of Human Behaviour

    Within this chapter the emerging topic of automated risk assessment in a domestic scene is discussed, state of the art techniques are reviewed followed by developed methodologies which focus on safer human and robotic interactions with an environment. By using the risk estimation framework, the notion of a quantitative risk score is presented. Hazards within a scene are evaluated and measured using risk elements which provide a numeric representation of specific types of risk. Emphasis is given to the concept of risk as a result of interaction with an environment, specifically whether human or robotic actions in a scene can effect overall risk. To this end, techniques which simulate human or robotic behaviour with regard to risk in an environment are reviewed. Specifically the ideas of interaction and visibility are addressed defining risk in terms of areas within a scene that are visited most often and which are least visible. As with any behaviour simulation techniques, validation of their accuracy is required and a number of simulation evaluation techniques are reviewed. Finally a conclusion as to the current state of automated risk assessment is given, with a brief look at the future of the research area

    FFT-based estimation of large motions in images: a robust gradient-based approach

    A fast and robust gradient-based motion estimation technique which operates in the frequency domain is presented. The algorithm combines the natural advantages of a good feature selection offered by gradient-based methods with the robustness and speed provided by FFT-based correlation schemes. Experimentation with real images taken from a popular database showed that, unlike any other Fourier-based techniques, the method was able to estimate translations, arbitrary rotations and scale factors in the range 4-6
