    Calibration and Validation of A Shared space Model: A Case Study

    Shared space is an innovative streetscape design that seeks minimum separation between vehicle traffic and pedestrians. Urban design is moving toward space sharing as a means of increasing the community texture of street surroundings. Its unique features aim to balance priorities and allow cars and pedestrians to coexist harmoniously without the need to dictate behavior. There is, however, a need for a simulation tool to model future shared space schemes and to help judge whether they might represent suitable alternatives to traditional street layouts. This paper builds on the authors’ previously published work in which a shared space microscopic mixed traffic model based on the social force model (SFM) was presented, calibrated, and evaluated with data from the shared space link typology of New Road in Brighton, United Kingdom. Here, the goal is to explore the transferability of the authors’ model to a similar shared space typology and investigate the effect of flow and ratio of traffic modes. Data recorded from the shared space scheme of Exhibition Road, London, were collected and analyzed. The flow and speed of cars and segregation between pedestrians and cars are greater on Exhibition Road than on New Road. The rule-based SFM for shared space modeling is calibrated and validated with the real data. On the basis of the results, it can be concluded that shared space schemes are context dependent and that factors such as the infrastructural design of the environment and the flow and speed of pedestrians and vehicles affect the willingness to share space

    A multi-objective GA-based optimisation for holistic Manufacturing, transportation and Assembly of precast construction

    Resource scheduling of construction proposals allows project managers to assess resource requirements, provide costs and analyse potential delays. The Manufacturing, transportation and Assembly (MtA) sectors of precast construction projects are strongly linked, but considered separately during the scheduling phase. However, it is important to evaluate the cost and time impacts of consequential decisions from manufacturing up to assembly. In this paper, a multi-objective Genetic Algorithm-based (GA-based) searching technique is proposed to solve unified MtA resource scheduling problems (which are equivalent to extended Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problems). To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first time that a GA-based optimisation approach is applied to a holistic MtA problem with the aim of minimising time and cost while maximising safety. The model is evaluated and compared to other exact and non-exact models using instances from the literature and scenarios inspired from real precast constructions

    Mathematical Models for Estimating the Risk of vCJD Transmission

    We present two different simple models for vCJD transmission by blood transfusion. Both models indicate that transfusions alone are unlikely to cause more than a few infections, unless the number of primary cases increases. To improve our models, future work should pursue data collection, empirical estimation of the model parameters, and examination of the underlying assumptions of our frameworks. Further improvements could also include examining susceptibility to vCJD infection by age group and iatrogenic infections introduced through surgical instruments. Regarding the latter, it may be worthwhile to conduct experiments to quantify the transmission of prions from an infected surgical instrument after repeated sterilization procedures

    Resource offload consolidation based on deep-reinforcement learning approach in cyber-physical systems.

    In cyber-physical systems, it is advantageous to leverage cloud with edge resources to distribute the workload for processing and computing user data at the point of generation. Services offered by cloud are not flexible enough against variations in the size of underlying data, which leads to increased latency, violation of deadline and higher cost. On the other hand, resolving above-mentioned issues with edge devices with limited resources is also challenging. In this work, a novel reinforcement learning algorithm, Capacity-Cost Ratio-Reinforcement Learning (CCR-RL), is proposed which considers both resource utilization and cost for the target cyber-physical systems. In CCR-RL, the task offloading decision is made considering data arrival rate, edge device computation power, and underlying transmission capacity. Then, a deep learning model is created to allocate resources based on the underlying communication and computation rate. Moreover, new algorithms are proposed to regulate the allocation of communication and computation resources for the workload among edge devices and edge servers. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a minimal latency and a reduced processing cost compared to the state-of-the-art schemes

    Co-optimized bidding strategy of an integrated wind-thermal-photovoltaic system in deregulated electricity market under uncertainties

    Clean Energy sources, such as wind and solar, have become an inseparable part of today's power grids. However, the intermittent nature of these sources has become the greatest challenge for their owners, which makes the bidding in the restructured electricity market more challenging. Hence, the main goal of this paper is to propose a novel multi-objective bidding strategy framework for a wind-thermal-photovoltaic system in the deregulated electricity market for the first time. Contrary to the existing bidding models, in the proposed model, two objective functions are taken into account that the first one copes with profit maximization while the second objective function concerns with emission minimization of thermal units. The proposed multi-objective optimization problem is solved using the weighted sum approach. The uncertainties associated with electricity market prices and the output power of renewable energy sources are characterized by a set of scenarios. Ultimately, in order to select the best-compromised solution among the obtained Pareto optimal solutions, two diverse approaches are applied. The proposed bidding strategy problem is being formulated and examined in various modes of joint and disjoint operation of dispatchable and non-dispatchable energy sources. Simulation results illustrate that not only the integrated participation of these resources increases the producer's expected profit, but also decreases the amount of the produced pollution by the thermal units.© 2019 Elsevier.
