The quality of different types of child care at 10 and 18 months. A comparison between types and factors related to quality.
The quality of care offered in four different types of non-parental child care to 307 infants at 10 months old and 331 infants at 18 months old was compared and factors associated with higher quality were identified. Observed quality was lowest in nurseries at each age point, except that at 18 months they offered more learning activities. There were few differences in the observed quality of care by child-minders, grandparents and nannies, although grandparents had somewhat lower safety and health scores and offered children fewer activities. Cost was largely unrelated to quality of care except in child-minding, where higher cost was associated with higher quality. Observed ratios of children to adults had a significant impact on quality of nursery care; the more infants or toddlers each adult had to care for, the lower the quality of the care she gave them. Mothers' overall satisfaction with their child's care was positively associated with its quality for home-based care but not for nursery settings
I will not go, I cannot go: cultural and social limitations of disaster preparedness in Asia, Africa, and Oceania
While much work has been invested in addressing the economic and technical basis of disaster preparedness, less effort has been directed towards understanding the cultural and social obstacles to and opportunities for disaster risk reduction. This paper presents local insights from five different national settings into the cultural and social contexts of disaster preparedness. In most cases, an early warning system was in place, but it failed to alert people to diverse environmental shocks. The research findings show that despite geographical and typological differences in these locations, the limitations of the systems were fairly similar. In Kenya, people received warnings, but from contradictory systems, whereas in the Philippines and on the island of Saipan, people did not understand the messages or take them seriously. In Bangladesh and Nepal, however, a deeper cultural and religious reasoning serves to explain disasters, and how to prevent them or find safety when they strike
Modelling the impact of toxic and disturbance stress on white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) populations
Several studies have related breeding success and survival of sea eagles to toxic or non-toxic stress separately. In the present investigation, we analysed single and combined impacts of both toxic and disturbance stress on populations of white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), using an analytical single-species model. Chemical and eco(toxico)logical data reported from laboratory and field studies were used to parameterise and validate the model. The model was applied to assess the impact of âPCB, DDE and disturbance stress on the white-tailed eagle population in The Netherlands. Disturbance stress was incorporated through a 1.6% reduction in survival and a 10â50% reduction in reproduction. âPCB contamination from 1950 up to 1987 was found to be too high to allow the return of white-tailed eagle as a breeding species in that period. âPCB and population trends simulated for 2006â2050 suggest that future population growth is still reduced. Disturbance stress resulted in a reduced population development. The combination of both toxic and disturbance stress varied from a slower population development to a catastrophical reduction in population size, where the main cause was attributed to the reduction in reproduction of 50%. Application of the model was restricted by the current lack of quantitative doseâresponse relationships between non-toxic stress and survival and reproduction. Nevertheless, the model provides a first step towards integrating and quantifying the impacts of multiple stressors on white-tailed eagle populations

There is a description of the structured process by which guidelines that aim to increase the likelihood of a higher score are created. Proposals are made relating to (a) the live updating of individual guideline recommendations and (b) tackling challenges related to the improvement of guidelines
Quantification of In Situ Denitrification Rates in Groundwater Below an Arable and a Grassland System
peer-reviewedUnderstanding denitrification rates in groundwater ecosystems can help predict where agricultural reactive nitrogen (N) contributes to environmental degradation. In situ groundwater denitrification rates were determined in subsoil, at the bedrock-interface and in bedrock at two sites, grassland and arable, using an in situ âpush-pullâ method with 15N labelled nitrate (NO3--N). Measured groundwater denitrification rates ranged from 1.3 to 469.5 ”g N kg-1d-1. Exceptionally high denitrification rates observed at the bedrock-interface at grassland site (470±152”g N kg-1d-1; SE, standard error) suggest that deep groundwater can serve as substantial hotspots for NO3--N removal. However, denitrification rates at the other locations were low and may not substantially reduce NO3--N delivery to surface waters. Denitrification rates were negatively correlated with ambient dissolved oxygen (DO), redox potential (Eh), ks and NO3- (all p-values p<0.01) and positively correlated with SO42- (p<0.05). Higher mean N2O/(N2O+N2) ratios at arable (0.28) site than the grassland (0.10) revealed that arable site has higher potential to indirect N2O emissions.
