Externalised vs. Internalised Consumption of Luxury Goods: Propositions and Implications for Luxury Retail Marketing
This study conceptualises the dichotomy of luxury goods consumption ('externalised luxury' vs. 'internalised luxury') in terms of six dimensions: on the one hand ostentation, materialism and superfluousness (which refer to luxury as a social statement) and, on the other hand individual lifestyle, emotions/hedonism and culture (which refer to luxury as individual style). Through this literary framework, it presents a series of propositions that might be tested in future research, one for each dimension, about retail strategies and operations for fashion luxury brands. Implications for retail managers of luxury companies are discussed for each proposition, considering the main aspects of retailing strategies and tools (e.g. assortment, sales force, in-store experience and atmospherics) together with possible theoretical developments. © 2012 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
The Digital Elevation Model Intercomparison eXperiment DEMIX, a community-based approach at global DEM benchmarking
This paper presents an initiative recently launched under the auspices of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) aiming at providing harmonised terminology and methods, as well as practical guidelines and results allowing the intercomparison of continental or global Digital Elevation Models (DEM). As the work is still ongoing the main purpose of this article is not the dissemination of the outcome but rather to inform the wider community about the initiative, communicate the chosen approach to raise awareness, and attract possible further participants. Nevertheless, some preliminary results are included and an outlook on planned next steps is provided
Efficacia delle raccomandazioni online relative ai servizi: il ruolo del tipo di linguaggio del mittente e della conoscenza previa del destinatario
Nell’era della comunicazione globale, caratterizzata dal ruolo centrale del passaparola come strumento di marketing ad alta efficacia persuasiva le raccomandazioni (referral) online assumono particolare rilevanza come fonti d’informazione pre-acquisto, soprattutto nell’ambito dei servizi, per i quali la scelta da parte del consumatore è particolarmente complessa, essendo caratterizzata da alto livello d’incertezza e rischio. Per la loro natura intangibile, infatti, i servizi sono valutabili dal consumatore solo dopo l’acquisto e nel momento del loro reale utilizzo . La presente ricerca investiga come la struttura linguistica delle raccomandazioni online, sotto forma di video, relative ad un servizio, influenza l’efficacia persuasiva delle stesse. Più specificatamente, lo studio si focalizza su una dimensione chiave del linguaggio – cioè il suo livello di astrattezza/concretezza – dimostrando che le raccomandazioni online relative ad un servizio sono più persuasive quando il linguaggio utilizzato dal mittente è astratto, invece che concreto, e quando il destinatario è caratterizzato da una alta conoscenza previa (prior knowledge) sul servizio oggetto della stessa raccomandazione. Inoltre, lo studio fa luce sul meccanismo sottostante tale effetto, dimostrando il ruolo di mediazione del processo di elaborazione delle immagini mentali (mental imagery processing). Lo studio offre rilevanti contributi di tipo teorico e pratico, con particolari implicazioni manageriali per i digital marketing manager delle aziende che operano nel settore dei servizi. aiWOM: Artificial Intelligence Word-of-Mouth. Conceptualizing Consumer-to-AI Communication
The advent of innovative technologies with installed artificial intelligence (AI) has raised the need to understand evolutive consumers’ behaviours. The dyadic communicative experience between consumers and technological artifacts with programmed social humanoid features shed the light on the emergence of an adaptative form of word-of-mouth (WOM) and that we label as “AI word-of-mouth” (aiWOM). We argue that there is a need for defining and investigating aiWOM as an emerging phenomenon which derive but diverge from WOM. Our conceptualization suggests that the communication interaction between consumers and AI technologies produce new consumers’ behaviors and psychological reactions
Covid-19 and covid-like patients: A brief analysis and findings of two deceased cases
BACKGROUND: The predominant pattern of lung lesions in patients affected by coronavirus disease (COVID-19) disease is diffuse alveolar damage with massive thromboembolism similar as described in patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronaviruses. Hyaline membrane formation and pneumocyte atypical hyperplasia were frequent. Importantly, the formation of platelet– fibrin thrombi in small vessels was seen consistent with coagulopathy, which appeared to be a common feature in patients who died of COVID-19. However, many were the cases found with similar COVID-19 symptomatology though negative results from nasal-pharyngeal swab performed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). This latter typology of patients, otherwise named COVID-like, showed analogous clinical signs with similar arterial blood gas, cell blood count and laboratory parameters, and same computed tomography (CT)-scan ground-glass opacities. Symptoms such as cough, fever, and difficulty breathing were highly similar as well. Both forms, COVID-19 and COVID-like, are primarily respiratory with multi-organ involvement and both revealed comparable incubation periods often with a rapid onset and unexpected decay. CASE REPORT: In this brief paper, we described two cases regarding two deceased males, one confirmed COVID-19 (RT-PCR but not CT scan) and the second a COVID-like (negative for RT-PCR but positive to CT scan with ground-glass opacity) whom condition, disease patterns, and analysis were highly similar. CONCLUSION: Improved investigation is mandatory, in which RT-PCR and CT scan procedures are completed by data from more detailed laboratory analysis, ABG analysis, BALF, and a deeper clinical assessment

The recovery of European freshwater biodiversity has come to a halt
Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity
