Governing network evolution in the quest for identity

    Get PDF
This paper provides a managerial account of network governance by exploring how initially non-powerful agents, driven by the quest for distinctive identity, shape the governance of their networks over time. The research design is that of a longitudinal comparative case study of the trajectories of three renowned, Oscar-winning Spanish filmmakers. It scrutinizes data coming from original interviews, as well as from multiple secondary data sources, in order to illustrate the propositions advanced. The paper's contribution is sought: 1) in proposing a micro-level framework for systematic thinking about network governance evolution, distinguishing four dimensions (co-governance, structure, strategy, and pace) and their respective sub-categories; 2) in advancing three peculiar identity profiles with different implications for the evolution of network governance (i.e., a maverick, an integrated professional, and a broker); 3) in bringing together two bodies of literature that have not conversed frequently (i.e., network governance and identity) in a largely overlooked cultural and historical context, that of Spain after the transition to democracy in 1975.Network governance; Management

The Complexity of Corruption: Nature and Ethical Suggestions

    Get PDF
Corruption is a well-established research topic which increasingly attracts interest, as attested by a growing body of literature. Nevertheless, disagreements persist not only about how to curve it, but even about its definition, causes and consequences. Such a lack of consensus reflects the complexity of the problem, a feature which is often cited but rarely analyzed. This paper aims to fill that gap. In particular, we first address the nature of corruption’s complexity by offering and analyzing an inventory of “generators of complexity” compiled from the available literature. Secondly, our paper draws from the key conclusions of that analysis to shed some light on the complex role played by corporations on corruption. Finally, we suggest that ethical aspects have to be considered in order to clarify many complex dilemmas around corruption and illuminate the corporate role in both domestic and foreign business activity.

Cellulosic materials as natural fillers in starch-containing matrix-based films: a review

    Get PDF
In this work, the different cellulosic materials, namely cellulose and lignin are analyzed. In addition, the starch-containing matrices (isolated starch and flour) reinforced with cellulosic materials to be used in packaging applications are described. Many efforts have been exerted to develop biopackaging based on renewable polymers, since these could reduce the environmental impact caused by petrochemical resources. Special attention has had the starch as macromolecule for forming biodegradable packaging. For these reasons, shall also be subject of this review the effect of each type of cellulosic material on the starch-containing matrix-based thermoplastic materials. In this manner, this review contains a description of films based on starch-containing matrices and biocomposites, and then has a review of cellulosic material-based fillers. In the same way, this review contains an analysis of the works carried out on starch-containing matrices reinforced with cellulose and lignin. Finally, the manufacturing processes of starch/cellulose composites are provided as well as the conclusions and the outlook for future works.Fil: Gutiérrez Carmona, Tomy José. Estimation of the control parameter from symbolic sequences: Unimodal maps with variable critical point

    Get PDF
The work described in this paper can be interpreted as an application of the order patterns of symbolic dynamics when dealing with unimodal maps. Specifically, it is shown how Gray codes can be used to estimate the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the order patterns of parametric unimodal maps. Furthermore, these PDFs depend on the value of the parameter, what eventually provides a handle to estimate the parameter value from symbolic sequences (in form of Gray codes), even when the critical point depends on the parameter.Comment: 10 pages, 14 figure

The management of schools’ websites in Cantabria, Spain

    Get PDF
School websites are not only sources of information and documentation, but also means of communication that are increasingly being accessed by members of society, especially by the different educational communities, thanks to the democratisation of Internet access. This paper deals with a qualitative research project in which information and communication technology coordinators of infant and primary publicly funded private schools (concertados) and state schools in urban, rural and semi-urban/rural areas within the Region of Cantabria (Spain) were interviewed in order to understand how school websites are managed. The findings show a range of views and practices in the schools’ management of their websites, some positive developments in their uses and functions, and numerous opportunities for improvement. School websites are essential communication tools, which need to be continuously improved/updated by their managers, with the support of the education authorities
