    Reciprocal interactions between tumor and endothelial cells: Effects of selective vasopressin V2 receptor peptide agonists

    Recent experimental evidence suggested that the synthetic peptide desmopressin (DDAVP) interferes tumor angiogenesis by inducing the formation of angiostatin. It is also known that DDAVP stimulates the endothelial release of von Willebrand factor, a key element in resistance to metastasis. Vasopressin V2 receptor agonists such as DDAVP seem to evoke dual angiostatic and antimetastatic effects, breaking cooperative interactions of tumor and endothelial cells during tumor progression.Fil: Garona, Juan.     Modern languages in the primary school in Spain and Scotland

    This article reports the outcomes of study visits to Spain in June 1998 and June 1999 to consider early language learning. The Basque Country was chosen because of its linguistic diversity in that there could be lessons to be learned for parts of Scotland where a language other than English is also the mother tongue. It also has autonomy in Education and would therefore differ from the situation in what was formerly known as el territorio MEC, namely, those parts of Spain which came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education in Madrid. The situation in the former territorio MEC would form the second part of the study visit in 1998 when schools and other establishments in the Spanish capital would be visited and in 1999 when establishments in Asturias would be visited. During the visits there was the opportunity to meet both prirnary and secondary teachers, headteachers and some of those responsible for early language learning in Bilbao and Madrid and Asturias. We were able to observe classes in Bilbao, Larrabetzu San Sebastian, Irun, Gijon and Greater Madrid

    Gaussian Approximations of Small Noise Diffusions in Kullback-Leibler Divergence

    We study Gaussian approximations to the distribution of a diffusion. The approximations are easy to compute: they are defined by two simple ordinary differential equations for the mean and the covariance. Time correlations can also be computed via solution of a linear stochastic differential equation. We show, using the Kullback-Leibler divergence, that the approximations are accurate in the small noise regime. An analogous discrete time setting is also studied. The results provide both theoretical support for the use of Gaussian processes in the approximation of diffusions, and methodological guidance in the construction of Gaussian approximations in applications

    Gaussian entanglement induced by an extended thermal environment

    We study stationary entanglement among three harmonic oscillators which are dipole coupled to a one-dimensional or a three-dimensional bosonic environment. The analysis of the open-system dynamics is performed with generalized quantum Langevin equations which we solve exactly in Fourier representation. The focus lies on Gaussian bipartite and tripartite entanglement induced by the highly non-Markovian interaction mediated by the environment. This environment-induced interaction represents an effective many-parties interaction with a spatial long-range feature: a main finding is that the presence of a passive oscillator is detrimental for the stationary two-mode entanglement. Furthermore, our results strongly indicate that the environment-induced entanglement mechanism corresponds to uncontrolled feedback which is predominantly coherent at low temperatures and for moderate oscillator-environment coupling as compared to the oscillator frequency.Comment: 15 page, 6 figure

    A methodology for population projections: an application to Spain

    This paper looks at projections for the Spanish population by sex and age for the period of 2005 to 2050. These were carried out using forecasts for birth and mortality rates, and migration. These rates are calculated using two main sources of information. First, a multivariate time series model was applied for the series of variables from the 1970 to 2001 period. Second a model was estimated for life expectancy and for a synthetic fertility index. Both sources of information were combined to obtain the forecasts for the rates. Immigration rates are predicted by assuming three possible scenarios based on the maximum proportion that immigrants will represent in the Spanish population. With these variables a structure of ages and sex for the Spanish population is estimated using a cohort component model
