Periodontal disease is inflammatory disease that characterized by oxidative stress and inversely associated with antioxidants. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) occurs with variable severity in 3%-5% of all pregnancy may be associated with oxidative stress and impairment of antioxidant defense. In previous cross –sectional or case control studies, clinical periodontal disease has been associated with GDM .This study was carried out to assess the association between the periodontal disease and (GDM). 80 pregnant women were participated in this study, 40 of them were diagnosed with GDM. Full mouth periodontal examination with some serum biochemical that associated with antioxidant status: uric acid, bilirubin, and total protein parameters were performed for all participants. The results of the study showed a significant decrease in serum uric acid and bilirubin in periodontitis groupsas compared with non-periodontitis groups in both pregnant women with and without GD, while serum total protein decreasednon-significantly in periodontitis groups than in non-periodontitis. The results of this study support the hypothesis of the association of periodontal disease with GDM. Keywords: Periodontitis, Gestational diabetes mellitus, serum antioxidants

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignancy of the liver. It is responsible for a large proportion of cancer deaths worldwide. Diagnosis of HCC often requires more sophisticated modalities and represents a challenge for physician.  Methods: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of AFP, YKL40 and GP73 in patients' serum with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in high-risk population in an attempt to justify the new, sensitive, specific and rapid measure for the diagnosis and detection of HCC. Serum YKL40, GP73 and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) were compared in a total of 60 human subjects in this study, including 20 healthy adults, and 40 patients with HCC, The main outcome measures were the specificity and sensitivity of YKL40 and GP73 in patients at risk for the development of HCC.Results: Using 4.4 relative units as a cut-off value, the sensitivity and specificity of serum GP73 for HCC were 85% and 90% compared with 77% and 60% for YKL40 using 21.06 ng/ml as a cut-off value. On the same context, the sensitivity and specificity of serum AFP at 8.5ng/ml cut-off were 82% and 95%. While that for the AFP and GP73 combined detection was up to 92% and 96%, justifying that the combined detection could prevent the false negative diagnosis by any marker alone and significantly improve the detection rate of HCC.Conclusions: The current evidence indicates that serum GP73 has HCC diagnostic efficacy inferior to that of AFP and YKL40 and the clinical implementation of serum GP73 measurement as a standard test for HCC is recommended alone or in combination with AFP.

Background: Creatinine clearance is safest method to measure glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in pregnancy. The objectives was to study a case-control study conducted in Omdurman Maternity Hospital aimed to assess GFR, using creatinine clearance and magnitude of changes of serum creatinine in pre-eclampsia.Methods: Pre-eclamptic were 70, normal pregnant 96 and non-pregnant 63. Investigations were done at St Hellier's hospital London. Serum and urine creatinine were measured using Jaffé reaction and spectrophotometer. 24-hour urine output was measured and creatinine clearance calculated to find GFR. GFR was calculated in ml/min/mm2 using John Hopkins’ method. Results: The mean serum creatinine in pre-eclamptic (68.6µmol/L) was less than non-pregnant (75.5µmol/L) (P=0.001) but was higher than normal pregnant (62.4µmol/L) (P=0.003). Mean GFR pre-eclamptic (68.6ml/min.1.73m2) was less than non-pregnant (87.0ml/min/1.73m2) (P=0.0001) and normal pregnant (89.0ml/min/1.73ml/min/1.73m2) (P =0.0001).Conclusions: GFR decreased at term in normal pregnancy and even more in pre-eclampsia. Serum creatinine levels increased and did not correlate with GFR changes in pre-eclampsia

Small molecules that can target human cancers have been highly sought to increase the anticancer efficacy, the present work describes the design and synthesis of novel series of five quinuclidinone derivatives (2a-2e). Their anticancer activities were investigated against breast cancer cells MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells harboring mutant p53 and normal breast counterpart MCF-12a. Derivative 2e reduced proliferation of MCF-7 and MCD-12a while it has no effect on MDA-MB-231. Derivative 2e induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells which is further confirmed by TUNEL assay and it reduced the percentage of cell in G2/M phase as confirmed by increased expression of cyclin B and reduced expression of cyclinD1. Derivative 2e reduced expression levels of Mdm2, Akt and ERK1/2 by and increased expression level of p53. Moreover, the apoptosis induction by 2e was also inhibited by PFT-α as evidenced by non-significant induction of apoptosis after treatment of MCF-7 cells with both derivative 2e and PFT-α. In addition, docking study reveals that derivative 2e has a binding pattern close to the pattern observed in the structure of the lead fragment 5,6-dimethoxy-2-methylbenzothiazole bound to T-p53C-Y220C. The above findings demonstrate that derivative 2e induces apoptosis in MCF-7 cells via targeting p53 which merits further development

Background: Pre-eclampsia is a serious disorder of pregnancy with unknown ethological factors that may occur at any stage of second or third trimester of pregnancy. The objectives of the present study were to assess changes in complete blood counts including platelets, liver enzymes and serum uric acid in pre-eclamptic cases compared to second-half normal pregnant and non-pregnant Sudanese women and their correlations to other biomarkers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, case-control study performed from December 2008 to December 2010; in Omdurman Maternity Hospital, in concomitance with other studies in pre-eclampsia. The sample size included three groups, 72 up pre-eclamptic cases in their recent pregnancies, 96 normal pregnant in their second half of pregnancy and 63 non- pregnant (control) women; a total of 231 subjects. Questionnaire Interviews and clinical examination were done for all participants. Laboratory investigations were done including complete blood picture, liver enzymes and uric acid.  Results: The mean Hb concentration of the pre-eclamptic (11.3g/dl±1.7) was statistically significantly lower than that of the non-pregnant (12.1g/dl±0.2) (P=0.01) but not from that of the normal pregnant (11.4g/dl±0.1) (P=0.882) .There was no statistical significant difference in the mean WBC count between the pre-eclamptic (7.4x103/mm3±0.3) and non-pregnant (7.3x103/mm3±0.3) (P=0.797) and between the pre-eclamptic and normal pregnant (7.7x103/mm3±0.2) (P=0.270). There was a considerable statistical significant decrease in the mean platelets count of the pre-eclamptic (236.4/mm3±8.3) compared to the non-pregnant group (322.0/mm3±10.4) (P=0.0001) s well as to the normal pregnant (275.0/mm3±8.9) (P = 0.003). In the pre-eclamptic cases, serum ALT correlated significantly with TWCC (r=0.26, P=0.03) and serum AST (r=0.65, P=0.000). In the pre-eclamptic cases, serum AST correlated significantly with Hb (r=0.26, P=0.03), serum ALT and serum uric acid (r=0.36, P=0.01).Conclusions: There was a considerable statistical significant decrease in mean platelets count of the pre-eclamptic compared to the non-pregnant group and to the normal pregnant may be explained by hemodilution; whereas further decrease was due to pre-eclampsia. ALT and AST are strong prognostic indicators of pre-eclampsia

New Algorithm for Drawings of 3-Planar Graphs

Graphs arise in a natural way in many applications, together with the need to be drawn. Except for very small instances, drawing a graph by hand becomes a very complex task, which must be performed by automatic tools. The field of graph drawing is concerned with finding algorithms to draw graph in an aesthetically pleasant way, based upon a certain number of aesthetic criteria that define what a good drawing, (synonyms: diagrams, pictures, layouts), of a graph should be. This problem can be found in many such as in the computer networks, data networks, class inter-relationship diagrams in object oriented databases and object oriented programs, visual programming interfaces, database design systems, software engineering…etc. Given a plane graph G, we wish to find a drawing of G in the plane such that the vertices of G are represented as grid points, and the edges are represented as straight-line segments between their endpoints without any edge-intersection. Such drawings are called planar straight-line drawings of G. An additional objective is to minimize the area of the rectangular grid in which G is drawn. In this paper we introduce a new algorithms that finds an embedding of 3-planar graph. Keywords: 3- Planar Graph; Graph Drawing; drawing on grid

Shear Performance of GFRP Reinforced Concrete Beams with Seawater and Chopped Fiber

This paper reports an experimental study on the behavior and shear strength of concrete beams reinforced with longitudinal GFRP bars mixed with sea water. In order to evaluate how much concrete contributes to shear resistance, seven beams were tested in bending. Similar in size and concrete strength, the beams were longitudinally reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer bars; however, they did not even have shear reinforcement. The beams, which measured 3,100 mm in length, 400 mm in depth, and 200 mm in width, were conducted and tested up to failure. The test variables were longitudinal reinforcement ratios (1.0, 1.4, and 2.0%), chopped fiber content (0, 0.5, 2, and 3 kg/m3), and mixing water type (freshwater and seawater). The test findings showed that increasing the reinforcement ratio increased the neutral-axis depth and allowed the formation of more closely spaced fractures while decreasing the loss of flexural stiffness after cracking. By increasing the area of concrete in compression, this in turn enhances the contribution of aggregate interlock as well as the contribution of uncracked concrete. Furthermore, increasing the reinforcement ratio improves the dowel action, which reduces the tensile stresses that are created in the concrete around it. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-2023-09-04-05 Full Text: PD

Liposomal drug delivery systems and anticancer drugs

    Get PDF
Cancer is a life-threatening disease contributing to ~3.4 million deaths worldwide. There are various causes of cancer, such as smoking, being overweight or obese, intake of processed meat, radiation, family history, stress, environmental factors, and chance. The first-line treatment of cancer is the surgical removal of solid tumours, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The systemic administration of the free drug is considered to be the main clinical failure of chemotherapy in cancer treatment, as limited drug concentration reaches the tumour site. Most of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) used in chemotherapy are highly cytotoxic to both cancer and normal cells. Accordingly, targeting the tumour vasculatures is essential for tumour treatment. In this context, encapsulation of anti-cancer drugs within the liposomal system offers secure platforms for the targeted delivery of anti-cancer drugs for the treatment of cancer. This, in turn, can be helpful for reducing the cytotoxic side effects of anti-cancer drugs on normal cells. This short-review focuses on the use of liposomes in anti-cancer drug delivery

Effect of viral load on hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B patients: assessed by fibroscan

    Get PDF
Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a severe worldwide health problem and a primary cause of chronic hepatitis, hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular cancer. In Egypt, the prevalence of HBsAg is of intermediate endemicity (2–8%). It has been known that the viral load and degree of hepatic fibrosis are considered independent factors that predict clinical outcomes after persistent HBV infection. However, the exact relationship between viral load and hepatic fibrosis is not well studied. Objectives: Our objective was to investigate the clinical effects of viral load on the severity of hepatic fibrosis. Patients and methods: Sixty patients with evident chronic HBV infection were enrolled. Using transient elastography, the patients were divided into two groups. Group 1: low fibrosis stage F1–2, and Group 2: high or significant fibrosis stage (F3–F4). Both groups were statistically compared for HBV-DNA viremia (PCR), clinical, and laboratory tests. Results: Serum bilirubin (p = 0.048), international normalised ratio (p 0.0001), and albumin (p = 0.01) were significantly increased in patients with higher grades of liver fibrosis on top of CHB. In addition, the viral load was found to be considerably greater in individuals who had higher grades of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis (P = 0.03). Conclusions: During follow-up, an obvious increase in the viraemia level may indicate significant hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic HBV infection. Our results could influence the decision about liver biopsy or treatment at that point
