    Packmule

    People face demands of hauling equipment and belongings with them every day, whether it be for work or leisure. This design report discusses and details a product that would allow people to overcome the struggles of this. The Packmule is an autonomous following robot that has the capability of carrying a load up to 30 pounds. The design involves two independently controlled motors operating two drive wheels so that the Packmule will be flexible in the directions it can move. There are also two more steering wheels for support of the base and the load inside. The way in which the Packmule follows the user consists of a wireless transmitter that will be worn on the user’s belt. This transmitter will emit an ultrasound signal that will be received by five ultrasonic position sensor receivers mounted on the Packmule. The signals will be filtered and amplified in order to communicate with microcontroller. The strength or amplitude from each received signal will be compared in order to determine the location of the user. Since the Packmule is autonomous, it will need to be able to detect objects in its path. Several infrared sensors will be mounted to the front of the Packmule for this reason. It will track the distance an object is away from the Packmule by measuring the amount of light . Algorithms programmed into the Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller will take the data from the IR sensors and the ultrasonic position sensor receivers and calculate a path to safely and efficiently follow the user

    Sample Considerations For Short-Circuited Filled Transmission Line Measurements

    Microwave materials characterization can be performed using a number of well-established measurement approaches. One such approach, the short-circuited rectangular waveguide (SC-RWG) filled transmission line approach, is known to have sample placement restrictions related to measurement reliability. This work focuses on this approach as a viable solution for microwave materials characterization of liquid materials and addresses the measurement restrictions within the context of sample length and dielectric properties. It is shown via simulation and measurement that samples of length greater than g/6 (where g is the wavelength in the RWG) do not have the reported measurement restrictions, nor do materials with high dielectric permittivity and/or loss factor (of any length)

    Probing Trends in Enantioinduction via Substrate Design: Palladium-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Allylic Alkylation of α-Enaminones

    Herein, we report the palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative asymmetric allylic alkylation of α-enaminones. In addition to serving as valuable synthetic building blocks, we exploit the α-enaminone scaffold and its derivatives as probes to highlight structural and electronic factors that govern enantioselectivity in this asymmetric alkylation reaction. Utilizing the (S)-t-BuPHOX ligand in a variety of nonpolar solvents, the alkylated products are obtained in up to 99% yield and 99% enantiomeric excess

    Single-qubit lasing in the strong-coupling regime

    Motivated by recent ``circuit QED'' experiments we study the lasing transition and spectral properties of single-qubit lasers. In the strong coupling, low-temperature regime quantum fluctuations dominate over thermal noise and strongly influence the linewidth of the laser. When the qubit and the resonator are detuned, amplitude and phase fluctuations of the radiation field are coupled, and the phase diffusion model, commonly used to describe conventional lasers, fails. We predict pronounced effects near the lasing transition, with an enhanced linewidth and non-exponential decay of the correlation functions. We cover a wide range of parameters by using two complementary approaches, one based on the Liouville equation in a Fock state basis, covering arbitrarily strong coupling but limited to low photon numbers, the other based on the coherent-state representation, covering large photon numbers but restricted to weak or intermediate coupling.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
