    Fourier Coefficients of Asynchronous Collective Motions in Heavy-ion Collisions

    We present a novel scenario in heavy-ion collisions where different modes of collective motions evolve asynchronously in the created nuclear medium. Such physics mechanisms could each dominate at a distinct evolution stage, or coexist simultaneously without coordinating with each other. If we employ a separate single-harmonic Fourier expansion to describe how each asynchronous collective motion affects particle emission, the particle azimuthal distribution should be the product of all these expansions. Consequently, cross terms between collectivity modes appear, and their contributions to experimental observables could be significant. In particular, we argue that the chiral magnetic effect (CME) and elliptic flow can develop asynchronously, with their convolution affecting the observable that is sensitive to the shear-induced CME. We will use the event-by-event anomalous-viscous fluid dynamics model to illustrate the effects of this scenario. Besides giving new insights into searches for the CME, we also propose a feasible experimental test based on conventional flow harmonics

    Disinfection efficacy of green synthesized gold nanoparticles for medical disinfection applications

    Background: In recent times, biosyntheses of metal nanoparticles were used for several life rescue applications. In this study, Dillenia indica leaf aqueous extract was utilized for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles.Objective: To test anti-microbial properties of biologically fabricated gold nanoparticles.Methods: Gold nanoparticles were efficiently prepared by making use of aqueous leaf extract of Dillenia indica. The excitation of formed AuNPs was confirmed using UV–Vis spectrophotometer. In particular, absorption spectra of AuNPs exhibited a well-defined SPR band centered at around 530 nm.Results: The high-resolution Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) results of the obtained AuNPs confirmed the formation of particles with a size range of 5–50 nm. The ultra-high resolution TEM (UHRTEM) images displayed clear lattice fringes on the particle surfaces. Single crystalline nature of the biosynthesized AuNPs was represented by means of selected-area electron diffraction pattern.Conclusion: The antibacterial activity of AuNPs revealed significant activity towards both gram negative and gram positive bacteria signifying their potential disinfection related applications in medicine and biology.Keywords: Dillenia indica leaves, disinfection, AuNPs

    Resveratrol regulates insulin resistance to improve the glycolytic pathway by activating SIRT2 in PCOS granulosa cells

    ScopeInsulin resistance (IR) has a close relationship with the main clinical manifestations of patients with PCOS; hence, the research and development of new drugs to treat PCOS by improving IR is a desiderate task at present. Resveratrol (RES) possesses a variety of beneficial pharmacological functions, such as antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, regulating glucose, and lipid metabolism. However, whether RES could improve IR and the underlying mechanisms remained unclear in PCOS.Methods and resultsSD rats received a high-fat diet and letrozole for 30 days to establish the PCOS model and then intervened with RES for 30 days. The results demonstrated that RES played a protective role on the IR in PCOS rats, which significantly decreased the levels of blood glucose and serum insulin, up regulated the expression of IGF1R, and down regulated the expression of IGF1. In vitro, KGN cells were treated with insulin, RES, and AGK2, respectively. We found that a high dose of insulin (4ÎĽg/mL) significantly inhibited KGN cell viability, decreased the level of lactic acid, and increased the level of pyruvate, while RES (25ÎĽM) attenuated the growth-inhibitory effect, as well as increased the level of lactic acid and decreased the level of pyruvate after high levels of insulin treatment. Simultaneously, RES up regulated the expression level of the crucial rate-limiting enzymes relating to glycolytic pathways, such as LDHA, HK2, and PKM2. Furthermore, AGK2 remarkably inhibited the expression level of SIRT2, which was similar to the same negative effects processed by insulin. Meanwhile, RES overtly repaired the glycolysis process by reversing the levels of lactic acid and pyruvate, together with up regulating the expression level of LDHA, HK2, and PKM2, after AGK2 treatment.ConclusionRES could effectively improve insulin resistance and restore the glycolysis pathway by regulating SIRT2, which may contribute to attenuating the ovarian damage of PCOS rats and provide a potential treatment for patients with PCOS

    Footprints of the (Nearly) Perfect Liquid

    In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the system has gone through a series of evolution, almost at every stage of its evolution it leaves behind footprints in flow observable. Those footprints contain valuable information of the bulk property of the (nearly) perfect liquid. By examing footprints of the nearly perfect liquid, we address a few important issues, including the ideal hydrodynamic limit, estimation of η/s\eta/s, testing the Number of Constituent Quark scaling at low energy, in small system, at large transverse momentum, and in forward region.     The polygalacturonase gene BcMF2 from Brassica campestris is associated with intine development

    Brassica campestris Male Fertility 2 (BcMF2) is a putative polygalacturonase (PG) gene previously isolated from the flower bud of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis Makino, syn. B. rapa ssp. chinensis). This gene was found to be expressed specifically in tapetum and pollen after the tetrad stage of anther development. Antisense RNA technology was used to study the function of BcMF2 in Chinese cabbage. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that there were deformities in the transgenic mature pollen grains such as abnormal location of germinal furrows. In addition, the homogeneous pectic exintine layer facing the exterior seemed to be overdeveloped and predominantly occupied the intine, thus reversing the normal proportional distribution of the internal endintine layer and the external exintine layer. Since it is a continuation of the intine layer, the pollen tube wall could not grow normally. This resulted in the formation of a balloon-like swelling structure in the pollen tube tip in nearly 80% of the transgenic pollen grains. Premature degradation of tapetum was also found in these transgenic plants, which displayed decreased expression of the BcMF2 gene. BcMF2 might therefore encode a new PG with an important role in pollen wall development, possibly via regulation of pectin's dynamic metabolism

    Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Peripheral Neuropathy in Chinese Patients With Diabetes: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study

    Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most common complication of diabetes, and its progression significantly worsens the patient's quality of life. This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors associated with DPN in a large sample of Beijing individuals with type 1 and 2 diabetes, as well as compared the diagnostic methods for DPN. A total of 2,048 diabetic patients from 13 centers in Beijing were assessed for DPN through questionnaires and examination. Patients were divided into DPN group and suspected DPN/non-DPN group. The demographic, clinical and biological characteristics between the two groups were compared. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify potential variables associated with DPN in diabetic patients. The diagnostic methods for DPN were also compared. Among the 2,048 diabetic patients, 73 cases of type 1 diabetes mellitus, 1,975 cases of type 2 diabetes were included in this study. Among them, 714 (34.86%) were identified with DPN, 537 (26.22%) were suspected of having DPN, and 797 (38.92%) were identified without DPN. Patient's age, duration of diabetes, and diabetic retinopathy were the significant independent risk factor for DPN among patients with type 2 diabetes. The odds ratio (OR) was 1.439 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.282–1.616, P < 0.001), 1.297 (95% CI: 1.151–1.462, P < 0.001), and 0.637 (95% CI: 0.506–0.802, P < 0.001), respectively. Ankle reflex, temperature sensation plus vibration sensation are the best screening test for patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes. The Youden indexes were 62.2 and 69.8%, respectively. The prevalence rates of DPN in the Chinese patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in Beijing were 21.92 and 35.34%, respectively.
