Use and Perceived Value of Class Forums

    Get PDF
Numerous studies have illustrated the ability of online class discussion forums to support college-level student learning and performance. Yet few instructors incorporate forums into their courses. Many believe that students will fail to find value in or even use class forums or they are concerned about increasing their instructional workloads. Herein we address these concerns via a mixed-methods study of our own students\u27 experiences with class forums

Urologic manifestations of inflammatory pseudotumor: Report of 2 cases and review of the literature.

    Get PDF
We report two adult patients with varied urologic symptoms who were found to have inflammatory pseudotumor on histopathology. The first patient had a large, solid, enhancing retroperitoneal mass lesion and presented with increased frequency of urination and recurrent urinary tract infections. The second patient had an obstructing left distal ureteric stricture and presented with painless hematuria. Though preoperative radiological diagnosis of this entity is not feasible, the present article illustrates the imaging findings in this unusual disease entity with review of the relevant literature

Do Bulls and Bears Understand Exchange Rate Dynamics? Evidence from Global Scenario

The motivation of the present study to investigate and understand the correlation of adjusted closing prices of forex and index (EUR/INR, GDP/INR, Nifty50, CNXIT) which is traded at National Stock Exchange, India. The empirical analysis of three years of data with the help of E-views software. After investigation, it can conclude there is a steady correlation ship among the group. CNXIT having a more robust relationship with Forex as compare to Nifty50. It shows a short-run equilibrium relationship variable but, long-run equilibrium among variables, but shows a very strong co-relation among all the research variable (EUR/INR, GDP/INR, Nifty50, CNXIT. Due to above support it determine the unidirectional price detection dynamics. The co-integration test allows high degree of relationships among variables

A Conversational Goal Setting Buddy for Student Learning

    Get PDF
Time management and goal setting skills are essential for student academic success in higher education. Meanwhile, the recent advances of chatbots offer new opportunities to support goal setting in a conversational way. In this preliminary research, we investigate the effects of chatbots as a conversational goal setting tool for student learning. We developed a chatbot called Sammy that invites students to pledge their study goals and reflect on their goal completion. We conducted a 7-day study among 70 undergraduate students. Analysis on pre- and post-study surveys indicated a significant improvement in student perceived time management in learning goals. Analysis on student daily check-in with Sammy showed an upward trend of student satisfaction in goal completion and confidence in future goal setting. In the future, we will conduct a more comprehensive mixed-method analysis, improve the functionalities and usability of Sammy, and conduct longitudinal studies

Diving deep into the milky way using anti-reflection coatings for astronomical CCDs

    Get PDF
We report two anti-reflection (AR) coatings that give better quantum efficiency (QE) than the existing AR coating on the Gaia astrometric field (AF) charged coupled devices (CCDs). Light being the core of optical astronomy is extremely important for such missions, therefore, the QE of the devices that are used to capture it should be substantially high. To reduce the losses due to the reflection of light from the surface of the CCDs, AR coatings can be applied. Currently, the main component of the Gaia satellite, the AF CCDs use hafnium dioxide (HfO2) AR coating. In this paper, the ATLAS module of the SILVACO software has been employed for simulating and studying the AF CCD pixel structure and several AR coatings. Our findings suggest that zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) and tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) will prove to be better AR coatings for broadband astronomical CCDs in the future and will open new avenues to understand the evolution of the milky way

    Simple Pendulum Revisited

We describe a 8085 microprocessor interface developed to make reliable time period measurements. The time period of each oscillation of a simple pendulum was measured using this interface. The variation of the time period with increasing oscillation was studied for the simple harmonic motion (SHM) and for large angle initial displacements (non-SHM). The results underlines the importance of the precautions which the students are asked to take while performing the pendulum experiment.Comment: 17 pages with 10 figure

Estimation of serum lipids in patients with Oral Submucous Fibrosis in India

    Get PDF
Objectives: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is the most prevalent precancerous condition in India. Low levels of lipids serves as a marker and prognostic indicator in the early detection of oral precancerous and cancerous states. In spite of the high prevalence and its potential to undergo malignant transformation, this condition has not widely been investigated with respect to the serum lipid levels. In the present study, an attempt was made to analyze the complete serum lipid profile, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL) choleste - rol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol in OSMF and controls. Material and Methods: The study was conducted in 45 clinically and histopathologically diagnosed cases of OSMF and 45 age and sex matched controls. The complete lipid profile including TC, TG, HDL cholesterol, LDL choles - terol and VLDL cholesterol was analyzed. Results: The serum lipid levels were significantly lower in the patients with OSMF than in the controls. When the values were compared between different disease stages, the maximum reduction of lipids was evident for stage 3 OSMF. From the present results, it is evident that the level of serum lipids decreases with progression of the disea - se. Conclusions: From these findings, it appears that the decrease in the lipid levels may be considered as a useful marker in the early diagnosis of oral premalignant condition like OSMF
