Due to the importance of oral case presentation in the pedagogical assessment of medical students and for their future career as medical officers, this study attempted to investigate the rhetorical pattern of oral case presentations of Clinical undergraduates of Year 3 and Year 5 at the International Islamic University Malaysia. Using content analysis, and proposed sampling, 32 case presentations were recorded during ward rounds and analysed. The researcher mapped all recordings against Dell, Lewin and Gigante’s Oral Presentation Expectations Checklist, and found that the subjects did not adhere to the schematic structure identified

Islamic English in Maher Zain’s songs: Is there a need?

A significant rise in the number of English-speaking Muslims around the world calls for more attention on the proper usage of Islamic terms in the English language. Popularized by al-Faruqi, Islamic English refers to the English language modified to enable Muslims to carry Islamic proper names, nouns, meanings and concepts without distortion. This article aims to highlight the need for Islamic English to be used particularly for Muslims. The study employed content analysis method in examining Islamic terms and concepts utilized by Maher Zain in his English Islamic songs. The findings indicate the presence of Arabic words and concepts in his songs mainly due to the absence of equivalent English words, lack of accurate translation and a form of worship, hence the need for Islamic English

The faculty’s perceptions on the importance of English oral proficiency and communication problems faced by ESL medical students.

As part of a professional healthcare team, doctors value communication as a means to unite the team around the common goal of treating patients. As the lingua franca of 21st century Medicine, the mastery of English is an essential component of communication. English is required for communication between peers and colleagues, to present symptoms and come up with differential diagnoses, to plan a course of medical intervention, to refer cases and patients to specialist centres and myriad other uses all requiring extensive use and mastery of English especially in terms of oral skills. Therefore, it is essential that we identify any weaknesses in our medical graduates at an early stage and rectify those weaknesses so as to produce competent and communicative medical graduates in the future. This paper reports on the findings of a survey on the medical lecturers’ perceptions on the importance of English oral skills for success in medical study and future career of their ESL medical students as well as the problems that their students might face pertaining to their English oral ability. The findings of the study can provide insights into developing English language programmes that better meet the needs of these students

ESL medical students’ oral proficiency— do they need help?

English proficiency is no longer a choice but a tool for survival for medical students who wish to practise medicine in the global working environment of today. Of the many skills that they are required to master, oral communication skills are of paramount importance. The pressure on medical students to interact effectively in oral form is immense in addition to the need to be knowledgeable on the content. Inability to converse well in English has important implications for their learning and could lead to clinically sub-par medical graduates in the future. This study investigates the importance of English oral skills for studies and future career as perceived by the clinical students and to assess the extent of problems that they faced when trying to communicate with their peers, subordinates and superiors especially in the formative clinical years. The data were collected via a structured questionnaire administered to 256 medical students who were in their clinical years. The findings of this study can act as a set of guidelines to be considered when developing programmes to enhance the English oral skills of these medical students

Perubahan Lahan Tambak di Kecamatan Biringkanaya Kota Makassar Menggunakan Citra Satelit Resolusi MenengahTahun 2010 dan 2016

Lahan tambak merupakan salah satu jenis dari lahan pertanian. Secara umum, Tambak merupakan kolam yang dibangun di daerah pasang surut dan digunakan untuk memelihara bandeng, udang laut dan hewan air lainnya yang biasa hidup di air payau. Dalam kegiatan alih fungsi lahan sangat erat kaitannya dengan permintaan dan penawaran lahan, dimana penawaran atau persediaan lahan sangat terbatas sedangkan permintaan lahan yang tidak terbatas. Perubahan lahan dapat di lihat dengan pendekatan menggunakan Sistem Informasi Geografis (SIG) untuk menambah informasi yang akan didapat, seperti sistem input data peta yang baik. Pendekatan ini menerapkan teknologi berbasis geospasial. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memetakan dan mengidentifikasi penyebaran lahan tambak dengan menggunakan citra satelit resolusi menengah di kecamatan Biringkanaya kota Makassar pada tahun 2010 dan 2016. Adapun prosedur dalam penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan tahapan pengumpulan data batas administrasi Kecamatan. Citra Satelit Landsat 8 tahun 2016 dan Citra Satelit SPOT 4 tahun 2010. Kemudian Komposit Citra, Koreksi Radiometrik, Koreksi Geometrik, Pengambilan Lokasi Sampel (Training Area) dan Analisis Keakuratan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian maka diperoleh Perubahan lahan di Kecamatan Biringkanaya Kota Makassar pada tahun 2010 hingga 2016 yaitu lahan tambak yang tetap sebagai lahan tambak sebesar 161,8 ha (5%), lahan tambak menjadi lahan pemukiman sebesar 160,37 ha (4%), lahan pemukiman menjadi lahan tambak sebesar 31,4 ha (1%) dan lahan pemukimantetap sebagai lahan pemukiman sebesar 3321,83 ha (90%)
