Heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants over titanium dioxide: A review of fundamentals, progress and problems

Even though heterogeneous photocatalysis appeared in many forms, photodegradation of organic pollutants has recently been the most widely investigated. By far, titania has played a much larger role in this scenario compared to other semiconductor photocatalysts due to its cost effectiveness, inert nature and photostability. Extensive literature analysis has shown many possibilities of improving the efficiency of photodecomposition over titania by combining the photoprocess with either physical or chemical operations. The resulting combined processes revealed a flexible line of action for wastewater treatment technologies. The choice of treatment method usually depends upon the composition of the wastewater. However, a lot more is needed from engineering design and modelling for successful application of the laboratory scale techniques to large-scale operation. Identification of unnatural variation in manufacturing of hard disc drive component

Hard disc drive (HDD) is known as a main device in a computer. In order to produce a high quality HDD, the source of unnatural variation need to be identified and controlled during manufacturing operation. In this research, simulation and modeling approach was utilized for analyzing the statistical process control (SPC) chart patterns of unnatural variation associated to its root cause error. Initially, the computer aided design (CAD) software was used to model a HDD component and to analyze the source of unnatural variation in manufacturing operation. Then, the artificial data streams for SPC were generated mathematically using MATLAB programming. The process started with normal (in-control) condition and can be followed by sudden shifts when there is a disruption of unnatural variation such as loading error, offsetting in cutting tool, and inconsistency in pneumatic pressure. The design parameters of artificial data streams can be manipulated in terms of window size (WS, length of data streams), magnitude of shifts (Sigma, size of unnatural variation), initial point of shifts (IS), and cross correlation (p) for bivariate data. The results indicated that the generation of artificial data streams can be adapted effectively to various condition of unnatural variation. Generally, this research has provided useful methodology for a quality practitioner in identifying the source of unnatural variation based on the SPC chart patterns

Adsorption of aqueous Cd(II) and Pb(II) on activated carbon nanopores prepared by chemical activation of doum palm shell

Non-uniformly sized activated carbons were derived from doum palm shell, a new precursor, by carbonization in air and activation using KOH, NaOH and ZnCl2. The activated carbon fibres were characterised by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, particle size analysis and evaluated for Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal. The 40-50 nm size, less graphitic, mesoporous NaOH activated carbon yielded high adsorption efficiency, pointing largely to the influence surface area. The performance of the KOH based activated carbon was arguably explained for the first time in terms of crystallinity. The efficiencies of the mesoporous ZnCl2-formulated activated carbon diminished due to the presence of larger particles. Batch adsorption of divalent metals revealed dependence on adsorbent dose, agitation time, pH and adsorbate concentrations with high adsorption efficiencies at optimum operating parameters. The equilibrium profiles fitted Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, and kinetics favoured pseudo-second order model. Family Business Succession Planning: Unleashing The Key Factors Of Business Performance

Family business studies are becoming more pervasive in Malaysia, and several studies have focused on factors that shape family-owned business performance levels. Succession planning issues, and specifically the succession issues and experiences of second or third generation family business owners (2GO/3GO), have not yet been explored at length. This study aims to revisit various factors that shape family firm performance by examining succession issues and transition experiences encountered by successors. Data were drawn from self-administered surveys completed by 55 2GOs and 3GOs. Descriptive, correlation and regression analyses were conducted to interpret our findings. The findings show that management styles, relationships between family members, values and beliefs and successor training significantly influence family business performance levels. The relationship between antecedents and business performance is found to be partly mediated by succession issues and fully mediated by sucession experience. Both theoretical and practical implications and avenues for future research are discussed

Value relevance of aggregated vs disaggregated book value and earnings : evidence from Malaysian high-tech firms / Mohd Halim Kadri, Muhd Kamil Ibrahim and Rozainun Abdul Aziz.

This study is aimed at investigating the value relevance of aggregated and disaggregated book value and earnings of high-tech firms listed on Bursa Malaysia for the period from 2003-2008. Using the Ohlson (1995) basic and modified equity valuation models, this study investigated whether disaggregated book value and earnings could explain the variation in market value better than aggregated book value and earnings. The results of the basic model show that the explanatory powers of both book value and earnings are fluctuating with book value is in a decreasing trend whereas earnings is in an increasing trend. The results of the modified models show that disaggregated book value and earnings could explain the variation in market value better than aggregated book value and earnings

Modul Pengajaran Quranic Penaakulan Matematik berasaskan kaedah inkuiri

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk membangunkan Modul Pengajaran Quranic Penaakulan Matematik berasaskan kaedah inkuiri. Pengajaran secara inkuiri ini menerapkan pernyataan dari ayat Al-Quran dan unsur sejarah matematik Islam. Kajian ini juga turut dibina untuk mengkaji kesesuaian Modul Pengajaran Quranic Penaakulan Matematik terhadap pembelajaran dan pengajaran. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, seramai lapan orang guru matematik sekolah menengah di daerah Johor dan pensyarah pendidikan matematik fakulti pendidikan Universiti Teknologi Malaysia dipilih sebagai responden kajian. Alat kajian yang digunakan untuk mengukur tahap kesesuaian modul dinamakan Borang Penilaian Modul Pengajaran Quranic Penaakulan Matematik. Ia mengandungi 40 item berbentuk skala Likert dan lima soalan penilaian umum. Analisis statistik deskriptif telah digunakan dalam menganalisis data iaitu nilai min dan peratusan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan sebahagian besar guru memberikan pandangan positif bahawa modul dapat meningkatkan nilai keislaman dan pengetahuan sejarah Islam dalam diri pelajar. Secara keseluruhannya, tahap kesesuaian Modul Pengajaran Quranic Penaakulan Matematik adalah tinggi. Dapatan kajian juga mendapati modul ini dapat membantu mengatasi kesukaran pelajar dalam memahami konsep Hujah di dalam topik Penaakulan Matematik. Walau bagaimanapun, terdapat beberapa cadangan kajian lanjutan turut dikemukakan untuk tujuan penambahbaikan

Pembangunan MyGSP: sumber atas talian bahan pengajaran matematik berbantukan perisian geometer's sketchpad (GSP)

MyGSP dibangunkan berikutan timbulnya kekangan-kekangan yang dihadapi oleh guru untuk mengintegrasikan perisian Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) dalam pengajaran matematik di dalam bilik darjah. Berpandukan Model Reka Bentuk Air Terjun, pembangunan MyGSP dimulakan dengan menganalisis keperluan pengguna melalui tinjauan literatur serta tinjauan ringkas. Daripada analisis tersebut, tiga kekangan utama dikenalpasti iaitu kekurangan masa untuk merancang pengajaran berbantukan GSP, kurangnya kursus berkaitan pengintegrasian GSP dalam pengajaran dan kurangnya sumber rujukan pengajaran matematik berbantukan perisian GSP. Justeru dengan mengambilkira peralatan komputer yang sedia ada di sekolah, pengkaji telah membangunkan MyGSP untuk mengatasi kekangan-kekangan tersebut. Dalam fasa reka bentuk, pengkaji telah membangunkan bahan-bahan pengajaran berbantukan perisian GSP untuk topik-topik matematik sekolah menengah daripada tingkatan satu hingga tingkatan lima. Strategi-strategi pengajaran yang dapat menjana kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi (KBAT) pelajar diaplikasikan ke dalam bahan pengajaran. Selain itu, video tutorial penggunaan GSP dalam bahan pengajaran turut dibangunkan. Dalam fasa pelaksanaan dan pengujian unit, seramai 30 orang pelajar tahun akhir Sarjana Muda Pendidikan Matematik telah terlibat dalam memberi pandangan mereka terhadap bahan-bahan yang telah dibangunkan. Dalam fasa integrasi, modul-modul yang terlibat iaitu Modul Bahan Pengajaran, Modul Muat Turun, Modul Forum dan Modul Video Tutorial telah digabungkan ke dalam suatu sistem yang dikenali sebagai MyGSP. Sistem MyGSP ini juga akan dikemaskini dan ditambahbaik dari semasa ke semasa dalam fasa penyelenggaraan. MyGSP ini diharapkan dapat memenuhi keperluan guru untuk mengintegrasikan perisian GSP ke dalam pengajaran mereka

The impacts of tourism development on community well-being in Langkawi: the case of Kampung Padang Puteh, Mukim Kedawang

Tourism has assisted the development of environmental, economic, social and cultural aspects of island communities. While there are some previous studies on the impacts of tourism development across Langkawi, it is necessary to consider the impacts of tourism development on individual island communities. Kampung Padang Puteh, Mukim Kedawang, Langkawi is located on the route between the island's main tourism attraction areas, Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah (which are highly affected by tourism activities). This purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of tourism development with regard to benefits and challenges based on the local community perspective. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used in this study through a questionnaire to 49 household representatives, and individual interviews that were conducted with 16 selected key informants in Kampung Padang Puteh. Analysis of mean, Spearman's rho correlation and qualitative approaches were used to interpret the data. The main findings concern community well-being and the benefits and challenges of tourism development impacts for the local community. It was found that the local community have improved their socioeconomic level through employment opportunities, additional income and language skills.
