    Fluid flow and heat transfer in microchannel devices for cooling applications: experimental and numerical approaches

    Microchannel heat sinks are pointed to have a great potential in cooling systems. This paper presents a systematic study to develop a microchannel heat sink to be used in PV panels cooling. A systematic experimental approach is used to optimize the heat sink geometry. Then the potential advantage of using flow boiling conditions is explored in both numerical and experimental approaches. The results show that a heat exchanger with thin walls and wide channels can dissipate a greater amount of heat. Comparing the results obtained for one and two-phase flow conditions, one must conclude that although in the boiling tests the heat transfer coefficient was higher, the cooling method with single-phase flow using water dissipated a greater amount of heat, which was mainly due to flow instabilities. In this context, the numerical work clearly evidences that boiling can be an advantage in microchannel heat sinks, as long as the flow is controlled. The work also shows that the considered numerical simulation tool is sensitive enough to quantify the heat transfer enhancement due to boiling within the examined microchannel paths

    Effectiveness of the bucco-lingual technique within a school-based supervised toothbrushing program on preventing caries: a randomized controlled trial

    Abstract Background Supervised toothbrushing programs using fluoride dentifrice have reduced caries increment. However there is no information about the effectiveness of the professional cross-brushing technique within a community intervention. The aim was to assess if the bucco-lingual technique can increase the effectiveness of a school-based supervised toothbrushing program on preventing caries. Methods A randomized double-blinded controlled community intervention trial to be analyzed at an individual level was conducted in a Brazilian low-income fluoridated area. Six preschools were randomly assigned to the test and control groups and 284 five-year-old children presenting at least one permanent molar with emerged/sound occlusal surface participated. In control group, oral health education and dental plaque dying followed by toothbrushing with fluoride dentifrice supervised directly by a dental assistant, was developed four times per year. At the remaining school days the children brushed their teeth under indirect supervising of the teachers. In test group, children also underwent a professional cross-brushing on surfaces of first permanent molar rendered by a specially trained dental assistant five times per year. Enamel and dentin caries were recorded on buccal, occlusal and lingual surfaces of permanent molars during 18-month follow-up. Exposure time of surfaces was calculated and incidence density ratio was estimated using Poisson regression model. Results Difference of 21.6 lesions per 1,000 children between control and test groups was observed. Among boys whose caries risk was higher compared to girls, incidence density was 50% lower in test group (p = 0.016). Conclusion Modified program was effective among the boys. It is licit to project a relevant effect in a larger period suggesting in a broader population substantial reduction of dental care needs. Trial registration ISRCTN18548869

    Effective width equations accounting for element interaction for cold-formed stainless steel square and rectangular hollow sections

    Rectangular hollow sections featuring high height-to-width (aspect) ratios have shown to offer improved ultimate capacity due to the effects of the interaction between the elements within the cross-section which are particularly significant for slender cross-sections (class 4) undergoing local buckling. The European design rules dealing with stainless steel, EN 1993- 1-4 [1], utilises the concept of cross-section classification and the effective width method for the design of slender cross-sections susceptible to local buckling neglecting such interaction effects, hence resulting in conservative predictions. This paper examines the benefits of element interaction effects on cold-formed ferritic stainless steel compressed sections on the basis of carefully validated finite element models. Following parametric studies, the applicability of various alternative design approaches accounting for element interaction to ferritic stainless steel is assessed and effective width curves, as well as a Class 3 limiting slenderness equation, are derived herein as an explicit function of the aspect ratio. Comparisons with the loads achieved in the FE models have shown that the proposed effective width equations allowing for the benefits of element interaction improve capacity predictions making design more cost-effective.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovació

    Late Onset Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders (LONMOSD) from a Nationwide Portuguese Study: Anti-AQP4 Positive, Anti-MOG Positive and Seronegative Subgroups

    Introduction: Several neuroimmunological disorders have distinct phenotypes according to the age of onset, as in multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis. It is also described that late onset NMOSD (LONMOSD) has a different phenotype. Objective: To describe the clinical/demographic characteristics of the LONMOSD and distinguish them from those with early onset (EONMOSD). Methods: From a nationwide Portuguese NMOSD study we analyzed the clinical/demographic characteristics of the LONMOSD. Results: From the 180 Portuguese patients 45 had disease onset after 50 years old, 80% were female. 23 had anti-AQP4 antibodies (51.1%), 13 anti-MOG antibodies (28.9%) and 9 were double seronegative (20.0%). The most common presenting phenotypes in LONMOSD were transverse myelitis (53.3%) and optic neuritis (26.7%), without difference from EONMOSD (p = 0.074). The mean EDSS for LONMOSD was 6.0 (SD=2.8), after a mean follow-up time of 4.58 (SD=4.47) years, which was significantly greater than the mean EDSS of EONMOSD (3.25, SD=1.80)(p = 0.022). Anti-AQP4 antibodies positive LONMOSD patients had increased disability compared to anti-MOG antibodies positive LONMOSD (p = 0.022). The survival analysis showed a reduced time to use a cane for LONMOSD, irrespective of serostatus (p<0.001). Conclusions: LONMOSD has increased disability and faster progression, despite no differences in the presenting clinical phenotype were seen in our cohort.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
