Status of reaction theory for studying rare isotopes

Reactions are an important tool to study nuclear structure and for extracting reactions relevant for astrophysics. In this paper we focus on deuteron induced reactions which can provide information on neutron shell evolution as well as neutron capture cross sections. We review recent work on the systematic comparison of the continuum discretized coupled channel method, the adiabatic wave approximation and the Faddeev momentum-space approach. We also explore other aspects of the reaction mechanism and discuss in detail difficulties encountered in the calculations.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, proceeding for HITES 201

BackgroundReducing dietary sodium has potential to benefit patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Little research is available defining dietary sodium knowledge gaps in patients with pre-dialysis CKD. We designed a brief screening tool to rapidly identify patient knowledge gaps related to dietary sodium for patients with CKD not yet on dialysis.MethodsA Short Sodium Knowledge Survey (SSKS) was developed and administered to patients with pre-dialysis CKD. We also asked patients if they received counseling on dietary sodium reduction and about recommended intake limits. We performed logistic regression to examine the association between sodium knowledge and patient characteristics. Characteristics of patients who answered all SSKS questions correctly were compared to those who did not.ResultsOne-hundred fifty-five patients were surveyed. The mean (SD) age was 56.6 (15.1) years, 84 (54%) were men, and 119 (77%) were white. Sixty-seven patients (43.2%) correctly identified their daily intake sodium limit. Fifty-eight (37.4%) were unable to answer all survey questions correctly. In analysis adjusted for age, sex, race, education, health literacy, CKD stage, self-reported hypertension and attendance in a kidney education class, women and patients of non-white race had lower odds of correctly answering survey questions (0.36 [0.16,0.81]; p = 0.01 women versus men and 0.33 [0.14,0.76]; p = 0.01 non-white versus white, respectively).ConclusionsOur survey provides a mechanism to quickly identify dietary sodium knowledge gaps in patients with CKD. Women and patients of non-white race may have knowledge barriers impeding adherence to sodium reduction advice

    Asthma costs and social impact

    Get PDF
In recent decades, both asthma prevalence and incidence have been increasing worldwide, not only due to the genetic background, but mainly because of the effect of a wide number of environmental and lifestyle risk factors. In many countries noncommunicable diseases, like asthma, are not yet considered a healthcare priority. This review will analyze and discuss disparities in asthma management in several countries and regions, such as access to healthcare human resources and medications, due to limited financial capacity to develop strategies to control and prevent this chronic disease. This review tries to explore the social and economic burden of asthma impact on society. Although asthma is generally accepted as a costly illness, the total costs to society (direct, indirect and intangible asthma costs) are difficult to estimate, mainly due to different disease definitions and characterizations but also to the use of different methodologies to assess the asthma socio-economic impact in different societies. The asthma costs are very variables from country to country, however we can estimate that a mean cost per patient per year, including all asthmatics (intermittent, mild, moderate and severe asthma) in Europe is USD1,900,whichseemslowerthanUSA,estimatedmeanUSD 1,900, which seems lower than USA, estimated mean USD 3,100.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF

Injury to the Superior Gluteal Artery during Intramedullary Fixation of a Proximal Femoral Fracture - A Case Report

Proximal femoral fractures represent a health problem of global proportions. Iatrogenic vascular lesion in the treatment of these fractures is an unusual potentially lethal complication, reported in only 0.2% of trochanteric fractures treated with intramedullary implants. Superior gluteal artery injury is extremely rare, with only two cases reported in literature.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Prevalence of asthma and its association with rhinitis in the elderly

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Asthma and rhinitis are frequent respiratory diseases in children and adults. Despite the increase in the aging population, there are few epidemiologic data on both diseases in the elderly. So far, no population-based study has analyzed the association between asthma and rhinitis symptoms and severity in this age group. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma in the population aged ≥65 years in mainland Portugal and to evaluate its association with the presence and classification of rhinitis according to ARIA recommendations, in this age group. METHODS: A cross-sectional, nationwide, population-based survey of individuals aged ≥65 years, living in mainland Portugal was performed. RESULTS: Data were obtained from 3678 respondents. The prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma was 10.9% (95% confidence interval (95%CI) 9.9-11.9). The frequency of asthma diagnosis increased with the number of nasal symptoms (p < 0.001). A strong association between asthma and rhinitis was found (odds ratio (OR) 13.86 (95%CI 10.66-18.02)). The strength of this association increased with the persistence and severity of rhinitis, being particularly high in elderly subjects with moderate-severe persistent rhinitis (OR 39.9 (95%CI 27.5-58.0)). CONCLUSIONS: Asthma is common in the elderly and strongly associated with rhinitis. The OR for asthma is especially high in persistent and severe ARIA classification rhinitis types. This study strengthens the need for an integrated assessment of asthma together with rhinitis in the elderl

Apathy in multiple sclerosis: gender matters

Apathy has been recognized as a frequent symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS) but uncertainty remains about its prevalence and clinical correlates. Therefore, the objective of this work was to assess the prevalence of apathy in patients with MS and to identify clinical and demographic correlates. A case-control study with 30 patients and 30 healthy controls matched for age, gender and education was performed. Apathy diagnosis was established using Robert et al.'s criteria. Additionally, apathy was assessed using the 10-item short version of the clinical-rated Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES-C-10). The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) were used to evaluate depression, fatigue and cognitive impairment, respectively. Apathy prevalence in MS patients was 43.3%. Patients with MS had higher AES-C-10 scores than controls (13.9 vs. 12.0, p=0.015). Patients with apathy presented a higher proportion of males (53.8% vs. 11.8%, p=0.02), lower educational level (53.8% vs. 11.8% of patients with up to 9years of education), higher scores on cognitive dimension of MFIS (18.0 vs. 8.0, p=0.048) and BDI (13.0 vs. 7.0, p=0.035) and worse performance on MoCA (24.0 vs. 26.0, p=0.028). Gender was the only independent predictor of apathy, with men presenting a higher risk compared to women (OR: 9.62; 95%CI: 1.02-90.61; p=0.048). In conclusion, apathy is a common neuropsychiatric disorder in MS and it is probably underdiagnosed. Male patients seem to have an increased risk of apathy, and this finding may be related to the generally more unfavorable course of MS in men.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Mesotelioma Maligno Primário do Peritoneu Associado a Carcinoma de Células Renais. Revisão Concisa

    Get PDF

BACKGROUND: Nationwide epidemiologic data on rhinitis in the elderly do not exist. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of rhinitis in the population aged 65 years or above in mainland Portugal and to characterize and classify rhinitis in this age group. METHODS: Cross-sectional, nationwide, population-based survey of citizens aged 65 years or above, living in mainland Portugal. Current rhinitis (CR) was defined as the presence of at least two symptoms: 'repeated sneezing and itchy nose', 'blocked nose for more than one whole hour', or 'runny nose when not having a cold or flu', either usually or in the last 12 months. Rhinitis severity was assessed using a visual analogue scale; rhinitis was classified according to ARIA. RESULTS: Data were obtained from 3678 responders (92.5% response rate). The prevalence of CR was 29.8% (95% confidence interval (CI): 28.4%-31.3%): 49.1% had mild intermittent, 7.0% mild persistent, 27.5% moderate-severe intermittent, and 16.4% moderate-severe persistent rhinitis. Only 38.6% of patients with CR had been physician diagnosed and 38.7% were under treatment for this disease in the previous year. Allergic conjunctivitis symptoms were referred by 68.6% of subjects with CR (rhinoconjunctivitis population prevalence, 20.5% (95% CI: 19.2%-21.8%)). CONCLUSIONS: Rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis are common but underdiagnosed and undertreated diseases in the geriatric population. This was the first nationwide epidemiological survey classifying rhinitis according to ARIA guidelines in this age group. More than 40% of old-age patients presented moderate-severe disease
