Self-organized metal nanostructures through laser driven thermocapillary convection
When ultrathin metal films are subjected to multiple cycles of rapid melting
and resolidification by a ns pulsed laser, spatially correlated interfacial
nanostructures can result from a competition among several possible thin film
self-organizing processes. Here we investigate self-organization and the
ensuing length scales when Co films (1-8 nm thick) on SiO_{\text{2}} surfaces
are repeatedly and rapidly melted by non-uniform (interference) laser
irradiation. Pattern evolution produces nanowires, which eventually break-up
into nanoparticles exhibiting spatial order in the nearest neighbor spacing,
\lambda_{NN2}.The scaling behavior is consistent with pattern formation by
thermocapillary flow and a Rayleigh-like instability. For h_{0}\leq2 nm, a
hydrodynamic instability of a spinodally unstable film leads to the formation

Teacher Perceptions of Two Multi-Component Interventions: Disability Awareness and Science
This study investigated teachers’ perspectives about two interventions designed to promote kindergarteners’ attitudes toward peers with disabilities. Interviews with teachers were conducted following the 6-week interventions. Teachers shared views on the best and most difficult aspects of the interventions, perceived benefits for teachers and children, and suggestions for improving the interventions. Teachers’ responses were analyzed using content analysis. One salient teacher reported benefit was notable improvement in social skills made by all students. Moreover, students in the experimental condition displayed increased acceptance of peers with disabilities, whereas teachers reported becoming more confident discussing the topic of disability with students. Teachers also reported that although it was difficult to step back and observe children in cooperative learning groups, it was beneficial to see that when children were given opportunities to handle social situations on their own, many were capable of doing so. Implications for practice and recommendations for future research are discussed

In vivo multiscale photoacoustic microscopy of human skin
Scalability is a key feature of photoacoustic microscopy (PAM). Reports have shown that PAM systems can be designed to possess sub-micron resolution at shallow depths or penetrate centimeters deep at the expense of resolution while the number of resolved pixels in the depth direction remains high. This capability to readily tune the imaging parameters while maintaining the same inherent contrast could be extremely useful for a variety of biomedical applications. Human skin, with its layered vascular structure whose dimensions scale with depth, provides an ideal imaging target to illustrate this advantage. Here, we present results from in vivo human skin imaging experiments using two different PAM systems, an approach which enables better characterization of the cutaneous microvasculature throughout the imaging depth. Specifically, we show images from several distinct areas of skin: the palm and the forearm. For each region, the same area was imaged with both an optical-resolution PAM (OR-PAM) and an acoustic-resolution PAM (AR-PAM), and the subsequent images were combined into composite images. The OR-PAM provides less than 5 ÎĽm lateral resolution, capable of imaging the smallest capillary vessels, while the AR-PAM enables imaging at depths of several millimeters. Several structures are identifiable in the ORPAM images which cannot be differentiated in AR-PAM images, namely thin epidermal and stratum corneum layers, undulations in the dermal papillae, and capillary loops. However, the AR-PAM provides images of larger vessels, deeper than the OR-PAM can penetrate. These results demonstrate how PAM's scalability can be utilized to more fully characterize cutaneous vasculature, potentially impacting the assessment of numerous cardiovascular related and cutaneous diseases

The Neurovascular Relation in Oxygen-induced Retinopathy
Purpose: Longitudinal studies in rat models of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) have demonstrated that abnormalities of retinal vasculature and function change hand-in-hand. In the developing retina, vascular and neural structures are under cooperative molecular control. In this study of rats with oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) models of ROP, mRNA expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), semaphorin (Sema), and their neuropilin receptor (NRP) were examined during the course of retinopathy to evaluate their roles in the observed neurovascular congruency. Methods: Oxygen exposures designed to induce retinopathy were delivered to Sprague-Dawley rat pups (n=36) from postnatal day (P) 0 to P14 or from P7 to P14. Room-air-reared controls (n=18) were also studied. Sensitivities of the rod photoreceptors () and the postreceptor cells (Sm) were derived from electroretinographic (ERG) records. Arteriolar tortuosity, , was derived from digital fundus images using Retinal Image multi-Scale Analysis (RISA) image analysis software. mRNA expression of , semaphorin IIIA (Sema3A), and neuropilin-1 (NRP-1) was evaluated by RT–PCR of retinal extracts. Tests were performed at P15–P16, P18–P19, and P25–P26. Relations among ERG, RISA, and PCR parameters were evaluated using linear regression on log transformed data. Results: Sm was low and was high at young ages, then both resolved by P25–P26. and Sema3A mRNA expression were also elevated early and decreased with age. Low Sm was significantly associated with high and Sema3A expression. Low Srod was also significantly associated with high VEGF164. and Sm were both correlated with . NRP-1 expression was little affected by OIR. Conclusions: The postreceptor retina appears to mediate the vascular abnormalities that characterize OIR. Because of the relationships revealed by these data, early treatment that targets the neural retina may mitigate the effects of ROP

Development of mental health first aid guidelines for deliberate non-suicidal self-injury: A Delphi study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is estimated that around 4% of the population engages, or has engaged, in deliberate non-suicidal self-injury. In clinical samples, the figures rise as high as 21%. There is also evidence to suggest that these figures may be increasing. A family member or friend may suspect that a person is injuring themselves, but very few people know how to respond if this is the case. Simple first aid guidelines may help members of the public assist people to seek and receive the professional help they require to overcome self-injury.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This research was conducted using the Delphi methodology, a method of reaching consensus in a panel of experts. Experts recruited to the panels included 26 professionals, 16 people who had engaged in self-injurious behaviour in the past and 3 carers of people who had engaged in self-injurious behaviour in the past. Statements about providing first aid to a person engaged in self-injurious behaviour were sought from the medical and lay literature, but little was found. Panel members were asked to respond to general questions about first aid for NSSI in a variety of domains and statements were extracted from their responses. The guidelines were written using the items most consistently endorsed by the consumer and professional panels.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 79 statements rated by the panels, 18 were accepted. These statements were used to develop the guidelines appended to this paper.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There are a number of actions which are considered to be useful for members of the public when they encounter someone who is engaging in deliberate, non-suicidal self-injury. These guidelines will be useful in revising curricula for mental health first aid and NSSI first aid training programs. They can also be used by members of the public who want immediate information about how to assist a person who is engaging in such behaviour.</p
