Immunodepletion in xenotransplantation
Xenograft transplantation is perhaps the most immunologically difficult problem in transplantation today. An overwhelming hyperacute rejection reaction (HAR) occurs within minutes of organ implantation. Preformed antibodies are thought to initiate this process. We used a pig-to-dog renal xenograft transplant model and investigated methods of decreasing the severity of hyperacute rejection. Female pigs weighing 15-20 kg were used as donors. Recipients were mongrel dogs weighing 15-25 kg. Experimental dogs were all given a number of treatments of IgG depletion using an antibody removal system (Dupont-Excorim). This machine immunoadsorbs plasma against a column containing immobilized staphylococcal protein A, which is known to bind the IgG Fc receptor. An 84% reduction in the IgG levels and a 71% reduction in IgM levels was achieved. Postoperative assessment was made of urine output, time to onset of HAR, and histopathological examination of the rejected kidneys. Although cross-matches between donor lymphocytes and recipient sera remained strongly positive in the treated dogs, there was a two- to fourfold reduction in the titers. The time to onset of HAR was prolonged in the experimental group, and the urine output was increased slightly. The histopathologic changes in the experimental group generally showed signs of HAR, but of less intensity than in the nonimmunodepleted control group. © 1990 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted
On Spacetimes with Constant Scalar Invariants
We study Lorentzian spacetimes for which all scalar invariants constructed
from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives are constant (
spacetimes). We obtain a number of general results in arbitrary dimensions. We
study and construct warped product spacetimes and higher-dimensional
Kundt spacetimes. We show how these spacetimes can be constructed from
locally homogeneous spaces and spacetimes. The results suggest a number
of conjectures. In particular, it is plausible that for spacetimes that
are not locally homogeneous the Weyl type is , , or , with any
boost weight zero components being constant. We then consider the
four-dimensional spacetimes in more detail. We show that there are severe
constraints on these spacetimes, and we argue that it is plausible that they
are either locally homogeneous or that the spacetime necessarily belongs to the
Kundt class of spacetimes, all of which are constructed. The

Systematics of the magnetic-Prandtl-number dependence of homogeneous, isotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
We present the results of our detailed pseudospectral direct numerical
simulation (DNS) studies, with up to collocation points, of
incompressible, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in three dimensions,
without a mean magnetic field. Our study concentrates on the dependence of
various statistical properties of both decaying and statistically steady MHD
turbulence on the magnetic Prandtl number over a large range,
namely, . We obtain data for a wide variety of
statistical measures such as probability distribution functions (PDFs) of
moduli of the vorticity and current density, the energy dissipation rates, and
velocity and magnetic-field increments, energy and other spectra, velocity and
magnetic-field structure functions, which we use to characterise intermittency,
isosurfaces of quantities such as the moduli of the vorticity and current, and
joint PDFs such as those of fluid and magnetic dissipation rates. Our
systematic study uncovers interesting results that have not been noted
hitherto. In particular, we find a crossover from larger intermittency in the
magnetic field than in the velocity field, at large , to smaller
intermittency in the magnetic field than in the velocity field, at low . Furthermore, a comparison of our results for decaying MHD turbulence
and its forced, statistically steady analogue suggests that we have strong
universality in the sense that, for a fixed value of , multiscaling
exponent ratios agree, at least within our errorbars, for both decaying and
statistically steady homogeneous, isotropic MHD turbulence.Comment: 49 pages,33 figure
Progress towards an accurate determination of the Boltzmann constant by Doppler spectroscopy
In this paper, we present significant progress performed on an experiment
dedicated to the determination of the Boltzmann constant, k, by accurately
measuring the Doppler absorption profile of a line in a gas of ammonia at
thermal equilibrium. This optical method based on the first principles of
statistical mechanics is an alternative to the acoustical method which has led
to the unique determination of k published by the CODATA with a relative
accuracy of 1.7 ppm. We report on the first measurement of the Boltzmann
constant by laser spectroscopy with a statistical uncertainty below 10 ppm,
more specifically 6.4 ppm. This progress results from improvements in the
detection method and in the statistical treatment of the data. In addition, we
have recorded the hyperfine structure of the probed saQ(6,3) rovibrational line
of ammonia by saturation spectroscopy and thus determine very precisely the
induced 4.36 (2) ppm broadening of the absorption linewidth. We also show that,
in our well chosen experimental conditions, saturation effects have a
negligible impact on the linewidth. Finally, we draw the route to future

Life History Traits of Sperm Whales Physeter macrocephalus Linnaeus, 1758 Stranded along Italian Coasts (Cetartiodactyla: Physeteridae)
We investigated the relationship between age and body length, and age at sexual maturity of Physeter macrocephalus individuals stranded along the Italian coast. Our molecular analysis shows that all our samples belong to the C.001.002 haplotype, shared between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations. We show that males attain sexual maturity at 10 years, similar to those from other marine areas. However, considering the same body length class, Mediterranean males are older than Atlantic ones. Our finding of a Mediterranean pregnant female of only 6.5 m in length and an assessed age of 24–26 years is particularly noteworthy, considering that females reach sexual maturity at about 9 years and 9 m of total length in other regions. Comparing our results with the literature data, we highlight the positive correlation between lifespan, adult body length and weight of males from the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean. Regardless of whether the relatively small size of Mediterranean specimens is a consequence of an inbreeding depression or an adaptation to less favorable trophic conditions, we recommend to closely monitor this population from a conservation perspective. In fact, its low genetic diversity likely corresponds to a relatively limited ability to respond to environmental changes compared with other populations
Superconductivity beyond the Pauli limit in high-pressure CeSb2
We report the discovery of superconductivity at a pressure-induced magnetic
quantum critical point in the Kondo-lattice system CeSb2, sustained up to
magnetic fields that exceed the conventional Pauli limit eight-fold. Like
CeRh2As2, CeSb2 is locally non-centrosymmetric around the Ce-site, but the
evolution of critical fields and normal state properties as CeSb2 is tuned
through the quantum critical point motivates a fundamentally different
