A radio continuum survey of the southern sky at 1420 MHz. Observations and data reduction
We describe the equipment, observational method and reduction procedure of an
absolutely calibrated radio continuum survey of the South Celestial Hemisphere
at a frequency of 1420 MHz. These observations cover the area 0h < R.A. < 24h
for declinations less than -10 degree. The sensitivity is about 50 mK T_B (full
beam brightness) and the angular resolution (HPBW) is 35.4', which matches the

Synchrotron Polarization at High Galactic Latitude
We present preliminary results from mapping the high-latitude Galactic
polarization with the Effelsberg Telescope at 21 cm. Structures on the
resulting maps are mostly on the scale of several degrees. The results show
detection of polarization over most of the field, at the level of tens of
percent of the synchrotron emission. The evidence of more structure in Stokes Q
and U rather than in suggests the existence of Faraday

Processes, Roles and Their Interactions
Taking an interaction network oriented perspective in informatics raises the
challenge to describe deterministic finite systems which take part in networks
of nondeterministic interactions. The traditional approach to describe
processes as stepwise executable activities which are not based on the
ordinarily nondeterministic interaction shows strong centralization tendencies.
As suggested in this article, viewing processes and their interactions as
complementary can circumvent these centralization tendencies.
The description of both, processes and their interactions is based on the
same building blocks, namely finite input output automata (or transducers).
Processes are viewed as finite systems that take part in multiple, ordinarily
nondeterministic interactions. The interactions between processes are described
as protocols.
The effects of communication between processes as well as the necessary
coordination of different interactions within a processes are both based on the
restriction of the transition relation of product automata. The channel based
outer coupling represents the causal relation between the output and the input
of different systems. The coordination condition based inner coupling
represents the causal relation between the input and output of a single system.
All steps are illustrated with the example of a network of resource
administration processes which is supposed to provide requesting user processes

Controlling overestimation of error covariance in ensemble Kalman filters with sparse observations: A variance limiting Kalman filter
We consider the problem of an ensemble Kalman filter when only partial
observations are available. In particular we consider the situation where the
observational space consists of variables which are directly observable with
known observational error, and of variables of which only their climatic
variance and mean are given. To limit the variance of the latter poorly
resolved variables we derive a variance limiting Kalman filter (VLKF) in a
variational setting. We analyze the variance limiting Kalman filter for a
simple linear toy model and determine its range of optimal performance. We
explore the variance limiting Kalman filter in an ensemble transform setting
for the Lorenz-96 system, and show that incorporating the information of the
variance of some un-observable variables can improve the skill and also
increase the stability of the data assimilation procedure.Comment: 32 pages, 11 figure
Ballastic signature identification systems study
The results are described of an attempt to establish a uniform procedure for documenting (recording) expended bullet signatures as effortlessly as possible and to build a comprehensive library of these signatures in a form that will permit the automated comparison of a new suspect bullet with the prestored library. The ultimate objective is to achieve a standardized format that will permit nationwide interaction between police departments, crime laboratories, and other interested law enforcement agencies
Living Close to Your Neighbors: The Importance of Both Competition and Facilitation in Plant Communities
Recent work has demonstrated that competition and facilitation likely operate jointly in plant communities, but teasing out the relative role of each has proven difficult. Here we address how competition and facilitation vary with seasonal fluctuations in environmental conditions, and how the effects of these fluctuations change with plant ontogeny. We planted three sizes of pine seedlings (Pinus strobus) into an herbaceous diversity experiment and measured pine growth every two weeks for two growing seasons. Both competition and facilitation occurred at different times of year between pines and their neighbors. Facilitation was important for the smallest pines when environmental conditions were severe. This effect decreased as pines got larger. Competition was stronger than facilitation overall and outweighed facilitative effects at annual time scales. Our data suggest that both competition and the counterâdirectional effects of facilitation may be more common and more intense than previously considered
G55.0+0.3: A Highly Evolved Supernova Remnant
Multi-frequency analysis has revealed the presence of a new supernova
remnant, G55.0+0.3, in the Galactic plane. A kinematic distance of 14 kpc has
been measured from HI spectral line data. The faint, clumpy half-shell is
non-thermal and has a physical radius of 70 pc. Using an evolutionary model,
the age of the remnant is estimated to be on the order of one million years,
which exceeds conventional limits by a factor of five. The remnant may be
associated with the nearby pulsar J1932+2020, which has a spin-down age of 1.1
million years. This work implies that the radiative lifetimes of remnants could
