Probing the QCD Critical Point with Higher Moments of Net-proton Multiplicity Distributions
Higher moments of event-by-event net-proton multiplicity distributions are
applied to search for the QCD critical point in the heavy ion collisions. It
has been demonstrated that higher moments as well as moment products are
sensitive to the correlation length and directly connected to the thermodynamic
susceptibilities computed in the Lattice QCD and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG)
model. In this paper, we will present measurements for kurtosis (),
skewness () and variance () of net-proton multiplicity
distributions at the mid-rapidity () and GeV/ for
Au+Au collisions at =19.6, 39, 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV, Cu+Cu
collisions at =22.4, 62.4 and 200 GeV, d+Au collisions at
=200 GeV and p+p collisions at =62.4 and 200 GeV.
The moment products and of net-proton
distributions, which are related to volume independent baryon number
susceptibility ratio, are compared to the Lattice QCD and HRG model
calculations. The and of net-proton
distributions are consistent with Lattice QCD and HRG model calculations at
high energy, which support the thermalization of the colliding system.
Deviations of and for the Au+Au collisions at

Simple model of bouncing ball dynamics: displacement of the table assumed as quadratic function of time
Nonlinear dynamics of a bouncing ball moving in gravitational field and
colliding with a moving limiter is considered. Displacement of the limiter is a
quadratic function of time. Several dynamical modes, such as fixed points, 2 -
cycles and chaotic bands are studied analytically and numerically. It is shown
that chaotic bands appear due to homoclinic structures created from unstable 2
- cycles in a corner-type bifurcation.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
The dynamics of bistable liquid crystal wells
A planar bistable liquid crystal device, reported in Tsakonas et al. [27], is modelled within the Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals. This planar device consists of an array of square micron-sized wells. We obtain six different classes of equilibrium profiles and these profiles are classified as diagonal or rotated solutions. In the strong anchoring case, we propose a Dirichlet boundary condition that mimics the experimentally imposed tangent boundary conditions. In the weak anchoring case, we present a suitable surface energy and study the multiplicity of solutions as a function of the anchoring strength. We find that diagonal solutions exist for all values of the anchoring strength W ≥ 0 while rotated solutions only exist for W ≥ Wc > 0, where Wc is a critical anchoring strength that has been computed numerically. We propose a dynamic model for the switching mechanisms based on only dielectric effects. For sufficiently strong external electric fields, we numerically demonstrate diagonal to rotated and rotated to diagonal switching by allowing for variable anchoring strength across the domain boundary
Gluino Coannihilation Revisited
Some variants of the MSSM feature a strip in parameter space where the
lightest neutralino is identified as the lightest supersymmetric particle
(LSP), the gluino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and is
nearly degenerate with the LSP, and the relic cold dark matter density is
brought into the range allowed by astrophysics and cosmology by coannihilation
with the gluino NLSP. We calculate the relic density along this gluino
coannihilation strip in the MSSM, including the effects of gluino-gluino bound
states and initial-state Sommerfeld enhancement, and taking into account the
decoupling of the gluino and LSP densities that occurs for large values of the
squark mass. We find that bound-state effects can increase the maximum LSP mass
for which the relic cold dark matter density lies within the range favoured by
astrophysics and cosmology by as much as ~ 50% if the squark to gluino mass
ratio is 1.1, and that the LSP may weigh up to ~ 8 TeV for a wide range of the
squark to gluino mass ratio \lesssim 100.Comment: 36 pages, 9 figures, matches version to appear in JHE

Green's functions for dislocations in bonded strips and related crack problems
Green's functions are derived for the plane elastostatics problem of a dislocation in a bimaterial strip. Using these fundamental solutions as kernels, various problems involving cracks in a bimaterial strip are analyzed using singular integral equations. For each problem considered, stress intensity factors are calculated for several combinations of the parameters which describe loading, geometry and material mismatch
Authorization and access control of application data in Workflow systems
Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) are used to support the modeling and coordinated execution of business processes within an organization or across organizational boundaries. Although some research efforts have addressed requirements for authorization and access control for workflow systems, little attention has been paid to the requirements as they apply to application data accessed or managed by WfMSs. In this paper, we discuss key access control requirements for application data in workflow applications using examples from the healthcare domain, introduce a classification of application data used in workflow systems by analyzing their sources, and then propose a comprehensive data authorization and access control mechanism for WfMSs. This involves four aspects: role, task, process instance-based user group, and data content. For implementation, a predicate-based access control method is used. We believe that the proposed model is applicable to workflow applications and WfMSs with diverse access control requirements

With the development of the smart grid concept, power distribution networks are becoming increasingly relevant. In this paper, we model power distribution systems as spatial networks. Topological and spatial properties of 14 European power distribution networks are analyzed, together with the relationship between geographical constraints and performance optimization, taking into account economic and vulnerability issues. Supported by empirical reliability data, our results suggest that power distribution networks are influenced by spatial constraints which clearly affect their overall performance.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
