Symbolic computation and construction of new exact traveling wave solutions to Fitzhugh-Nagumo and Klein-Gordon equations

With the aid of the symbolic computation system Mathematica, many exact solutions for the Fitzhugh-Nagumo equation and the Klein-Gordon equation with a quadratic nonlinearity are constructed by an auxiliary equation method, the so-called (G'/G)-expansion method, where the new and more general forms of solutions are also obtained. Periodic and solitary traveling wave solutions capable of moving in both directions are observed

    Essays in empirical asset pricing

This dissertation consists of three articles. In the first article, I provide a literature survey on the cross-section and time-series of expected returns. I review some of the most significant empirical anomalies in the literature. The second article utilizes an international context and revisits the findings which argue that the positive relation between book-to-market ratio and future equity returns is driven by historical changes in firm size in the US. After confirming these results in the US setting, I find that they do not hold in regions outside the US. In the international sample, book-to-market ratio has a significantly positive relation with future equity returns even after changes in firm size are controlled for in regression analyses. This positive relation is again visible when the orthogonal component of book-to-market ratio is used as a sorting variable in portfolio analyses. The third article examines the predictive power of average skewness, defined as the average of monthly skewness values across stocks, in an international setting. First, after confirming the validity of the US results for the sample period between 1990 and 2016, I find that the intertemporal relation between average skewness and future market returns becomes either insignificant or marginally significant when the sample period is extended. Second, when I repeat the analysis in 22 developed non-US markets, I find that average skewness has no robust predictive power. The inability of average skewness to forecast market returns does not depend on the method used to calculate average skewness or the regression specificatio

An Application for the Determination of the Acoustical Properties of Small Volume Popular Music Venues

Researches on the acoustical properties of popular music venues (bars, clubs etc.) are rather limited in the related literature. However, taking the number of listeners into account, these venues are more crowded than concert halls where classical music is being played. Therefore, the acoustical properties of these venues, such as bars-clubs, are quite important in respect to transmit the musical performance to the listeners properly. This study is based on the presentations of the acoustical properties of selected venues and the comparisons of the data acquired from the sound systems with the measured acoustical data. Thus, it is aimed to analyze the relationships between the acoustical designs and sound systems in such venues

Analytical solution of population balance equation involving aggregation and breakage in terms of auxiliary equation method

This paper presents an effective analytical simulation to solve population balance equation (PBE), involving particulate aggregation and breakage, by making use of appropriate solution(s) of associated complementary equation via auxiliary equation method (AEM). Travelling wave solutions of the complementary equation of a nonlinear PBE with appropriately chosen parameters is taken to be analogous to the description of the dynamic behaviour of the particulate processes. For an initial proof-of-concept, a general case when the number of particles varies with respect to time is chosen. Three cases, i.e. (1) balanced aggregation and breakage, (2) when aggregation can dominate and (3) breakage can dominate, are selected and solved for their corresponding analytical solutions. The results are then compared with the available analytical solution, based on Laplace transform obtained from literature. In this communication, it is shown that the solution approach proposed via AEM is flexible and therefore more efficient than the analytical approach used in the literature. © Indian Academy of Sciences

Künt Karın Travmasına Bağlı Total Pancreas Kırılması: Nadir Bir Vaka Sunumu

A rare case of pancreatic fracture due to blunt trauma was presented. The patient was 70 year old male who had a motor vehicle collision and was suspected a pan-creatic trauma due his examinations with ultrasound and computerized tomogra-phy. The diagnosis of splenic injury and pancreas body total fracture in the point where the portal vein crosses the pancreatic body was made with the help of magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. He was taken to emergency sur-gery where a splenectomy and a distal pancreatectomy were performed. We rep-resented this infrequent case of pancreatic fracture and its complications after blunt abdominal trauma and discuss the diagnostic and management practices

The effect of bosentan on plasma ischemia-modified albumin levels in acute mesenteric ischemia

Objective: Our aim in this study was to examine the effects of bosentan, an orally active antagonist of endothelin A and B receptors, on plasma ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in mesenteric ischemia induced rats. Material and Method: In this randomized, controlled trial 36 mature female wistor rats were divided into three groups. Group 1 (n=12) was the control group which only laparotomy was performed. Group 2 (n=12) was the ischemia group and group 3 (n=12) was the bosentan pretreated (100 mg/kg-1 day, 1 gavage/day for two days before surgery) ischemia group. In the ischemia groups (GR 2 and GR 3) following laparotomy the superior mesenteric artery was clamped using a bulldog clamp during laparotomy. Blood samples were taken at 30 minutes from all groups and IMA levels were studied. Results: Plasma IMA levels in the ischemia group (GR 2) was significantly higher compared to those of the control (p<0.001) and bosentan pretreated group (GR 3) (p=0.002). Serum IMA levels were higher in GR 3 than control group but there were no statistical significance (p=0.659). Conclusion: These preliminary results suggest that bosentan might have a protective effect in mesenteric ischemic conditions

Vassals, servants and traitors: image of serbs in popular Turkish historiography

This study is established around the pre-1990 popular historiography in the Turkish Republic with a specific focus on depictions of Serbia and Serbs in the Ottoman Empire. By analyzing the events and characters from both early (i.e. the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries) and late Ottoman history, the aim is to understand how the established image(s) of ''Serbia'' and ''Serbs'' functions within popular Turkish historiography, a discipline which addresses a considerable portion of the society. This work, in order to achieve a comprehensive historiography survey, consists of the evaluations of the narratives of the authors with diversified political backgrounds. By doing so the thesis strives to understand the similarities and divergences among the authors and thus encourage a comparative discussion of historiography. For the comparison Western and Turkish academical works on Ottoman history, and for the theoretical framework studies regarding Turkish historiography, theories of nationalism were used. As a result, this study offers a broad, representative and yet critical reading of the Turkish historiography on the common histories of the Ottoman Empire and Serbia as well as examples and indications of anachronisms, distortions and instrumentalization of the history
