Schistosome Dermatitis at Basswood Lake, Minnesota

During the summer of 1965 cases of schistosome dermatitis were reported at the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Wilderness Field, Station on Basswood Lake, Minnesota. Collection and isolation of gastropods from the lake revealed an extremely high incidence of Trichobilharzia ocellata infections in Lymnaea stagnalis. A flock of semi-domestic mallard ducks first introduced al the lake in 1963 are believed to be the principal definitive hosts contributing to the epidemiology of the parasite in the area

Poinsett Silty Clay Loam: Its Genetic Factors

The Poinsett soils of eastern South Dakota present a problem in soil classification and mapping because of local profile textural variations. Although these soils have a silty matrix which in some profiles appears to be loess, profiles only a few feet away contain admixtures of gravel, cobble, and stone. Moreover, their substrate are mottled and often stratified by color and texture. The silty materials from which the Poinsett soils are developed are more friable and appear to be more permeable than glacial till, but the admixtures of gravel, cobble, and stone make them less desirable than loess as a soil forming material. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mode of origin of the parent materials of the Poinsett soils and to compare the Poinsett soils with the Moody soils which are developed from loess, and the Vienna soils which are developed from glacial till. A comparison of field observations and laboratory analyses of profiles of Moody, Vienna, and Poinsett soils show that the parent materials of the Poinsett appear to be neither loess nor glacial till. The stratified substrata, admixture of gravel and stone, and included bodies of till indicate that the Poinsett parent materials were deposited primarily by melt waters of stagnated glacial ice. This is borne out by the abrupt textural changes in the Poinsett substrata which is characteristic of materials that have been sorted and deposited by water

Konstruktion eines Testinstruments zur Erhebung des Professionswissens von Lehramtsstudierenden im Fach Sozialwissenschaften (SoWis-L)

In diesem Beitrag wird die Konstruktion und Validierung eines Testinstruments zur Erhebung des Professionswissens von angehenden Lehrkräften im Fach Sozialwissenschaften (SoWi) vorgestellt. Der SoWis-L ("Sozialwissenschaftliches Wissen - Lehrkräfte") stellt für das Lehramtsstudienfach SoWi das erste standardisierte Testinstrument zur ökonomischen Erhebung von Professionswissen unter Berücksichtigung des Integrationsfachcharakters dar. Anhand einer Stichprobe von N = 374 Lehramtsstudierenden der Universität Duisburg-Essen (UDE) wurde das 46-Item-Instrument bezüglich seiner Testgüte untersucht. IRT-Analysen ergaben zufriedenstellende Reliabilitäts- und Itemfitwerte für alle Wissensbereiche mit Ausnahme des soziologischen Fachwissens. Strukturanalysen sprechen für eine dreidimensionale Modellierung mit einer fachdidaktischen Wissensdimension und zwei fachwissenschaftlichen Dimensionen (politisches und wirtschaftliches Wissen). Die Kriteriumsvalidität des Instruments ist mit signifikanten Gruppenunterschieden zwischen Bachelor- und Masterstudierenden, zwischen gymnasialen und nicht-gymnasialen Lehrämtern sowie einer signifikanten Korrelation mit Abiturnoten indiziert.This article presents a standardized test measuring the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and content knowledge (CK) of social science teacher students. The SoWis-L ("Sozialwissenschaftliches Wissen - Lehrkräfte," Engl.: Professional Knowledge of Social Science Teachers) covers declarative and conceptual knowledge from three knowledge domains. The 46-item instrument was developed and validated based on a sample of N = 374 social science teacher students. We examined research questions concerning psychometric test criteria, especially reliability and criterion validity. IRT analyses showed good item fit and adequate reliability for all knowledge areas except sociological content knowledge. A structural equation model resulted in a good fit of the model with three correlated latent factors, i. e., PCK and two facets of CK (political and economic CK). A comparison of the test results in teacher students aiming at a grammar school vs. a nongrammar school teaching degree and those enrolled in master vs. bachelor studies as well as significant correlations with grades in final school exams ("Abitur") indicate the criterion validity of the SoWis-L

Women’s football and media : an analysis of development in the reporting of the German women’s football on example of VfL Wolfsburg

Die Bachelorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung der Berichterstattung im deutschen Frauenfußball am Beispiel des VfL Wolfsburg. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Online-Berichterstattung. Berücksichtigt werden dabei die Spielzeiten 2011/2012 und 2013/2014. Im Laufe der Arbeit werden zusätzliche Unterfragen beantwortet, um mögliche Zusammenhänge zu erschließen. Allen voran, ob ein Zusammenhang zwischen sportlichem Erfolg und einer positiven Entwicklung der Berichterstattung nachgewiesen werden kann. Auch die Darstellungsformen der Artikel werden analysiert. So lässt sich am Ende der Arbeit eine zusammenfassende Beurteilung erstellen, inwieweit sich die Berichterstattung über den deutschen Frauenfußball in den letzten Jahren positiv entwickelt hat
