MONOCYTE ABUNDANCE AND WHITE BLOOD CELL EXPRESSION OF PROLACTIN AND NF-KB PATHWAY GENES IN BEEF STEERS ARE ALTERED BY GRAZING TOXIC ENDOPHYTE-INFECTED TALL FESCUE AND LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDE CHALLENGE

Experiment 1 tested the hypothesis that ad libitum consumption of a 1:1 blend (MIX) of sodium selenite (ISe) and SELPLEX vs solely ISe as selenium (Se) supplements (27 ppm) in a vitamin-mineral mix (V-M) by steers subjected to summer-long grazing of toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue (TE) would ameliorate the negative effects of TE by positively affecting the expression pattern of prolactin (PRL) and NF-kB pathway genes by circulating leukocytes (WBC). Experiment 2 tested the hypothesis that the MIX form of supplemental Se also would ameliorate the negative effects of in vitro blood lipopolysaccharide challenge (LPS) on WBC gene expression. The MIX form of Se increased whole blood Se, serum PRL, and red blood cell concentrations; decreased monocyte abundance; but did not affect WBC gene expression in either pathway or experiment. However, Experiment 1 revealed that TE consumption altered expression of 5 PRL pathway genes, and 7 NF-kB genes, suggesting a reduced adaptive immune response in cattle consuming TE. Experiment 2 found that LPS challenge differentially affected expression of WBC PRL receptor (PRLR) isoforms, and altered expression of 4 PRL, and 4 NF-kB pathway genes, indicating an increased inflammatory response in cattle consuming TE with exposure to LPS

Preliminary study of a possible automatic landing system

    Get PDF
Navigation and control laws for a possible automatic landing system have been investigated. The system makes use of data from an inertial table and either an airborne or ground radar to generate signals that guide the airplane to a landing. All landing maneuvers take place within a zone that extends 6000 m out from the touchdown point, 4000 m on each side of the runway center line, and 540 m high. The results show that the system can adequately control the airplane on steep, curved decelerating approaches to a landing that takes place with small errors from the desired landing point and desired airplane attitude. The system studied would interface well with the scanning beam microwave landing system (MLS). The use of this system with the MLS makes it possible to incorporate an independent landing monitor

13 - Politicking Homelessness in Atlanta: How does Atlanta Responds to its Homeless Population?

    Get PDF
The ethnography performed intended to provide a balanced and integrated perspective of how Atlanta\u27s governmental entities, non-profit organizations, and activist collectives engage and counteract its visibly poor or homeless population. Through primary data collection via semi-structured interviews and participant observation, the study conducted provides a concise and comprehensive presentation of the dominant institutions, interpretation on the cause of homelessness, and it’s solutions to visible poverty. It was vital to contextualize the research given Atlanta\u27s unique history of public housing (de)construction, while granting the individuals dealing with homelessness autonomy in the discussion. To conclude this ethnography explored and expounded on the variation in opinion, as well as the complexities of bureaucracy associated with power dynamics within homeless activism. The impact and longevity of efforts made to resolve homelessness was largely determined by the political relationships among institutions, at the center facilitating both relationships and impact was the flow of money. It was apparent the importance of money and political relationships that largely facilitated the impact and longevity of the efforts performed. Regardless of the voices and views of the institutions, this study implies that granting space to the most marginalized is necessary in order to center their struggles and allow them to self-determine their futures as citizens, and humans on the fringe of poverty. Conducting further research is required to obtain a holistic perspective on not only the detriments of homelessness but most importantly the solutions. This study will be expanded during the Spring 2019 semester to center the perspective of homeless individuals with the aim of gaining further insight into the approaches of the institutions involved
