Measurements of ion mobility in argon and neon based gas mixtures
As gaseous detectors are operated at high rates of primary ionisation, ions
created in the detector have a considerable impact on the performance of the
detector. The upgraded ALICE Time Projection Chamber (TPC) will operate during
LHC Run with a substantial space charge density of positive ions in the
drift volume. In order to properly simulate such space charges, knowledge of
the ion mobility is necessary.
To this end, a small gaseous detector was constructed and the ion mobility of
various gas mixtures was measured. To validate the corresponding signal
analysis, simulations were performed.
Results are shown for several argon and neon based mixtures with different
fractions. A decrease of was measured for increasing water

Leisure Time Activities as Cognitive Training: Can Cognitive Fitness Improve Well-Being of Older Adults?
Economic reports show that traditional economic variables are becoming insufficient in indicating nation’s progress and that self-reported well-being is emerging as an important indicator of nation’s prosperity and quality of life of its inhabitants. Since average life expectancy is consistently increasing all over the world, practitioners and scholars are increasingly confronted with the question of what can be done to improve the well-being of growing elderly population. An often highlighted characteristic of older adults is cognitive decline, and interventions aimed at improving or maintaining cognitive abilities of elderly are being extensively designed. In this chapter we will review studies indicating a link between cognition and well-being in aging and advocate (long-term) involvement in leisure activities as a form of cognitive training. Apart from its availability to a much wider audience than those participating in cognitive interventions, a key argument in favor of leisure activities is its unambiguous positive association with well-being

Electron - positron cascades in multiple-laser optical traps
We present an analytical and numerical study of multiple-laser QED cascades
induced with linearly polarised laser pulses. We analyse different polarisation
orientations and propose a configuration that maximises the cascade
multiplicity and favours the laser absorption. We generalise the analytical
estimate for the cascade growth rate previously calculated in the field of two
colliding linearly polarised laser pulses and account for multiple laser
interaction. The estimate is verified by a comprehensive numerical study of
four-laser QED cascades across a range of different laser intensities with QED
PIC module of OSIRIS. We show that by using four linearly polarised 30 fs laser
pulses, one can convert more than 50 % of the total energy to gamma-rays
already at laser intensity . In this
configuration, the laser conversion efficiency is higher compared with the case
with two colliding lasers
The Christology of Theodoret of Cyrrhus: The Question of Its Development
The Christological opus of Theodoret of Cyrrhus remains somewhat controversial due to his involvement in the Nestorian and Monophysite controversies as the champion of the Antiochene milieu. Although the recent scholarship is increasingly benevolent in the considerations of his Christology, still certain doubts are present about the constancy of his teaching. In this dissertation, I argue that the Christology of Theodoret of Cyrrhus remains consistent and unchanged throughout his life. The analysis of both his early and mature Christological output, as evidenced in the Expositio rectae fidei and the Eranistes, shows that the main theological concepts and terminology remain unaffected by the many years of fierce theological debates. Theodoret’s Christology is constructed around the key concept of sharp distinction between the uncreated and created orders of existence, to which the divine and human natures of Christ respectively belong. The ontological chasm between these orders effectively prevents the union on the level of οὐσία and φύσις, which designate the common characteristics of entities, but could only takes place at the level of πρόσωπον or ὑπόστασις, which he reserves for individual characteristics.
Theodoret’s Christology is defined in relation to the economy of salvation. The Logos is the subject of the Incarnation, since he is the only personal presence at the moment of conception. The Logos creates and unites to himself the human nature of Christ. The natures are united in the person of Jesus Christ.
The Christological work of Theodoret paved the way to the definition of faith proclaimed at the Council of Chalcedon. It was through his efforts that the Antiochene Christology experienced certain restitution after the blow dealt to it by the Cyrilline party at the Council of Ephesus (431). Therefore, Theodoret of Cyrrhus ought to resume his rightful place in the history of the Christological controversies alongside and in equal glory with Cyril of Alexandria
CROSS SECTIONS FOR SCATTERING OF ELECTRONS ON BF3
We calculate cross sections for elastic scattering and electronic excitation of BF3 molecules by low energy electrons. The R-Matrix code Quantemol-N has been used for calculations. The cross sections indicate the presence of a shape resonance of symmetry B-1 (A(2)'' in D-3h) at around 4.5 eV
Classical Radiation Reaction in Particle-In-Cell Simulations
Under the presence of ultra high intensity lasers or other intense
electromagnetic fields the motion of particles in the ultrarelativistic regime
can be severely affected by radiation reaction. The standard particle-in-cell
(PIC) algorithms do not include radiation reaction effects. Even though this is
a well known mechanism, there is not yet a definite algorithm nor a standard
technique to include radiation reaction in PIC codes. We have compared several
models for the calculation of the radiation reaction force, with the goal of
implementing an algorithm for classical radiation reaction in the Osiris
framework, a state-of-the-art PIC code. The results of the different models are
compared with standard analytical results, and the relevance/advantages of each
model are discussed. Numerical issues relevant to PIC codes such as resolution
requirements, application of radiation reaction to macro particles and
computational cost are also addressed. The Landau and Lifshitz reduced model is

Influence of the Main Filter on QRS-amplitude and Duration in Human Electrocardiogram.
Accurate measurement of electrocardiograms (ECG) is critical for effective diagnosis of patient’s cardiac functions. Detailed examination
of filters’ effects on ECG accuracy, reproducibility and robustness covering a wide range of available commercial products can provide
valuable information on the relationship between quality and effectiveness of filters, and assessments of patients’ cardiac functions. In this
study, ECG device with 12 leads and built-in filters used for ECG measurements was assessed on human volunteers. Results showed that
with respect to measuring QRS wave duration and R-amplitude variation, there was a 4 % inaccuracy when the main filter was ON and OFF,
and R-amplitude variation was most pronounced in the V4 lead. Accordingly, variability of R-amplitude and length of QRS wave can be
reduced by the use of appropriate lead, and filter activation during the ECG assessment
