The Danish National Lymphoma Registry:Coverage and Data Quality

BACKGROUND:The Danish National Lymphoma Register (LYFO) prospectively includes information on all lymphoma patients newly diagnosed at hematology departments in Denmark. The validity of the clinical information in the LYFO has never been systematically assessed. AIM:To test the coverage and data quality of the LYFO. METHODS:The coverage was tested by merging data of the LYFO with the Danish Cancer Register and the Danish National Patient Register, respectively. The validity of the LYFO was assessed by crosschecking with information from medical records in subgroups of patients. A random sample of 3% (N = 364) was made from all patients in the LYFO. In addition, four subtypes of lymphomas were validated: CNS lymphomas, diffuse large B-cell lymphomas, peripheral T-cell lymphomas, and Hodgkin lymphomas. A total of 1,706 patients from the period 2000-2012 were included. The positive predictive values (PPVs) and completeness of selected variables were calculated for each subgroup and for the entire cohort of patients. RESULTS:The comparison of data from the LYFO with the Danish Cancer Register and the Danish National Patient Register revealed a high coverage. In addition, the data quality was good with high PPVs (87% to 100%), and high completeness (92% to 100%). CONCLUSION:The LYFO is a unique, nationwide clinical database characterized by high validity, good coverage and prospective data entry. It represents a valuable resource for future lymphoma research

Development of an indirect quantitation method to assess ichthyotoxic b-type prymnesins from prymnesium parvum

Harmful algal blooms of Prymnesium parvum have recurrently been associated with the killing of fish. The causative ichthyotoxic agents of this haptophyte are believed to be prymnesins, a group of supersized ladder-frame polyether compounds currently divided into three types. Here, the development of a quantitative method to assess the molar sum of prymnesins in water samples and in algal biomass is reported. The method is based on the derivatization of the primary amine group and subsequent fluorescence detection using external calibrants. The presence of prymnesins in the underivatized sample should be confirmed by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. The method is currently only partly applicable to water samples due to the low amounts that are present. The growth and cellular toxin content of two B-type producing strains were monitored in batch cultures eventually limited by an elevated pH. The cellular toxin contents varied by a factor of ~2.5 throughout the growth cycle, with the highest amounts found in the exponential growth phase and the lowest in the stationary growth/death phases. The strain K-0081 contained ~5 times more toxin than K-0374. Further investigations showed that the majority of prymnesins were associated with the biomass (89% ± 7%). This study provides the basis for further investigations into the toxicity and production of prymnesins

Dessutom har vi sett hur korsningsaspekterna deltar i upplevelsen av förĂ€ldrarnas kön och engagemang, och hur rĂ„dgivarnas kön och Ă„lder pĂ„verkar deras erfarenhet av sig sjĂ€lva som yrkesverksammaThe aim of this study is to examine school counselors’ view of their own and the parents' gender when a child is in contact with the counselor. We want to investigate the counselors' view of father's participation and whether the parents' gender affects the interaction between the counselor and the parent. We also want to investigate whether counselors experience that external factors, such as class, ethnicity and age are important when they communicate with parents of a child that is in contact with them. The study contains 6 semi structured interviews with counselors working in schools in different areas. We have found that several of the respondents have experienced mothers as all in all more involved than fathers, and that divorced fathers are more involved than fathers married to the mother of their child. Furthermore, we have seen how intersectional aspects take part in the experience of parents’ gender and involvement, and how the counselors’ gender and age affect their experience of themselves as professionals

To age is a major change for both those who stay at home and for those who choose to move to a nursing home. What the experiences are and what it means has interested us during our education and therefore we decided to take a deeper look into this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to examine the experience older people have of moving to a nursing home and having lived there for a short time. We chose to use a qualitative approach and conducted six interviews with people who had recently moved to a nursing home. The result showed that the change could be divided into physical, psychological and social experiences. In the physical experience were feelings related to the physical dependence of the social care staff as well as the bodily change for the elderly. The psychological experience showed both security/insecurity of staying at home or moving, different losses, and to feel at home. And finally, the social experience showed a big change in the personal network and also that relatives are important during the process of moving and the time afterwards
