Role of Physicians in Addressing Food Insecurity in Vermont Seniors

    Get PDF
Introduction: This study investigated Vermont physicians’ awareness of - and engagement in – addressing food insecurity experienced by their elderly patients. This information is needed to better understand the role physicians play in solving this problem and to know how education and access to services could ensure that the needs of elders are met in a culturally sensitive manner. Many elders must choose between paying bills, buying medication or buying food. Some elders are unaware that they qualify for food assistance, or would feel stigmatized using it. Nationally, 56% of physicians reported that they were not knowledgeable about food insecurity. Food insecurity can be screened for by using Hunger Free Vermont’s Two Question Screen. Screening, followed by a multidisciplinary team approach with contributions from dietitians, geriatricians, social workers and psychologists may be the most effective way of assessing at-risk patients.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1214/thumbnail.jp

Historicising intervention: Strategy and synchronicity in British intervention 1815-50

Copyright @ 2013 British International Studies Association. This article identifies three key themes in British intervention for purposes of liberal reordering in the period 1815–50, namely the ‘opening-up’ of new market spaces (discussed in relation to Uruguay/the Argentine Confederation in the 1840s), a cosmopolitan humanitarianism evident in the campaign for the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade that ran throughout this period, and the political-ideological contest between constitutionalist and absolutist forces and represented here by intervention in the Iberian Peninsula in the late 1820s to1830s. In developing a strategic perspective upon military/naval intervention the analysis shows its utility to have been subordinate to more fundamental sociopolitical, cultural, and institutional determinants. With regard to understanding the outcomes of specific intervention the analysis shows the importance of systematically evaluating developments in the domestic political environments of both intervening and target state as well as the military campaign itself and the need for sufficient general alignment or synchronisation in the timeline of developments in each of these three domains. This model helps to explain that whilst liberal interventions are not necessarily bound to fail, they frequently prove more difficult, complex, and protracted than the interveners expect

    The Doormaker

Abstract Twelve-year-old Agnes Atwater and her brother Dean are sent north to spend the summer with their grandmother, a woman neither of them have ever met. They discover an enormous house nestled in a wilderness full of enchantment, mystery and a secret so enormous, it will change their world forever. When the Atwater children and their new friend Peat discover that a necklace is actually the missing part of a key that allows the user to open doorways between their world and others, they are thrust into an adult world of danger and intrigue. On one side is their grandmother, part of an organization responsible for mapping and guarding the doorways between worlds. On the other side is Cabil, a mysterious foe, who will stop at nothing to find the “doormaker” named in an ancient legend. As the children follow the destruction left in Cabil’s wake—oozing black puddles, toxic landscapes—they must navigate the line between good and evil. In Peat, Agnes finds someone she can trust with a secret—her ability to peek into other people’s memories. After a confrontation with a traitor in their midst, and a series of adventures that lead the children into another world, Agnes discovers that she has known the secret of the doormaker all along

Efficacy and Safety of Single and Double Doses of Ivermectin versus 7-Day High Dose Albendazole for Chronic Strongyloidiasis

Strongyloidiasis, caused by an intestinal helminth Strongyloides stercoralis, is common throughout the tropics. We conducted a prospective, clinical study to compare the efficacy and safety of a 7-day course of oral albendazole with a single dose of oral ivermectin, or double doses, given 2 weeks apart, of ivermectin in Thai patients who developed this infection. Patients were regularly followed-up after initiation of treatment, until one year after treatment. Ninety patients were studied (30, 31 and 29 patients in albendazole, single dose, and double doses ivermectin group, respectively). The average duration of follow-up were 19 (range 2–76) weeks in albendazole group, 39 ( range 2–74) weeks in single dose ivermectin group, and 26 ( range 2–74) weeks in double doses ivermectin group. Parasitological cure rate were 63.3%, 96.8% and 93.1% in albendazole, single dose oral ivermectin, and double doses of oral ivermectin respectively. No serious adverse event associated with treatment was found in any of the groups. Therefore this study confirms that both a single, and a double dose of oral ivermectin taken two weeks apart, is more effective than a 7-day course of high dose albendazole for patients with chronic infection due to S. stercoralis
