    Seroprevalence of leptospiral Antibodies in Humans and Domestic Animals in Iran

    Background: Leptospirosis is an important re-emerging zoonotic disease in tropical and subtropical areas and acute febrile infection and a conveyable bacterial disease of animals and humans caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Methods: Five hundred and ninety seven serum samples (159 cattle, 142 sheep, 147 goats and 149 humans) were collected from center, southeast and northeast of Iran. MAT was performed mainly as described by Turner with some modification in Leptospira Research Laboratory. Results: Antibodies were detected at least against one serovar of Leptospira interrogans in 97 sera (17.24%) among 597 samples at a dilution 1:100 or greater.     Renal ammonium excretion after an acute acid load: Blunted response in uric acid stone formers but not in patients with type 2 diabetes

    Idiopathic uric acid nephrolithiasis is characterized by elevated urinary net acid excretion and insufficient buffering by ammonium, resulting in excessively acidic urine and titration of the relatively soluble urate anion to insoluble uric acid. Patients with type 2 diabetes have similar changes in urinary pH, net acid excretion, and ammonium in 24-h urine collections at baseline, even after controlling for dietary factors, and are at increased risk for uric acid nephrolithiasis. However, not all patients with type 2 diabetes develop kidney stones, suggesting that uric acid stone formers may have additional urinary defects, perhaps not apparent at baseline. We performed a metabolic study of 14 patients with idiopathic uric acid nephrolithiasis, 13 patients with type 2 diabetes, and 8 healthy control subjects of similar body mass index. After equilibration on a fixed diet for 5 days, subjects were given a single oral acid load (50 meq ammonium chloride), and urine was collected hourly for 4 h. Uric acid stone formers had a lower ammonium excretory response to acute acid loading compared with diabetic and nondiabetic nonstone formers, suggesting that an ammonium excretory defect unique to uric acid stone formers was unmasked by the acid challenge. The Zucker diabetic fatty rat also did not show impaired urinary ammonium excretion in response to acute acid challenge. A blunted renal ammonium excretory response to dietary acid loads may contribute to the pathogenesis of idiopathic uric acid nephrolithiasis. © 2013 the American Physiological Society

    <p>Following an application from Nutrilinks Sarl submitted for authorisation of a health claim pursuant to Article 13(5) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 via the Competent Authority of Belgium, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) was asked to provide a scientific opinion on a health claim related to “Femilub®” and maintenance of vaginal moisture. The food that is the subject of the health claim, “Femilub®”, which is a combination of macadamia oil, borage oil, perilla oil, d‑α‑tocopherol and biotin, is sufficiently characterised. The claimed effect, maintenance of vaginal moisture, is a beneficial physiological effect. No human intervention studies were provided from which conclusions could be drawn for the scientific substantiation of the claim. A cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of “Femilub®” and maintenance of vaginal moisture.</p&gt

    Study of morphological charachteristic and distribution of Indomysis annandalei and Rhopalophthalmus sp. (Crustacea: Mysida) for the first time from Iranian costal of Persian Gulf

    Mysida includes small planktonic Crustaceans that are cosmopolitan, this tiny animals could be found in variety of marine habitats and depts. In this investigation mysida populations were sampled and studied from Iranian costal waters of Persian Gulf (estuary of Arvand and Bahmanshir rivers) in monthly basis from March to October 2011. Sampling process was conducted using plankton net 300 µm mesh size and oblique tows were made from near the bottom to the surface in 7 stations. Finally two species identify and morphological charachteristic of Indomysis annandalei and Rhopalophthalmus sp. was drew with Camera Lucida. Species abundance was measured in different months and stations. Maximum value of the average abundance of species was shown in June (2.85 1 N per M^3)

    Study of taxonomy and ecology of Planktonic Copepods of Poecilostomatida in Bahrakan waters (Northwestern Persian Gulf)

    The present investigation is based on separation and identification of Planktonic Poecilostomatoida in Bahrakan waters during July, August, October of 2010 and December, February, April of 2011. In this study The order of Poecilostomatida was represented by 3 species, Corycaeus andrewsi and Sapphirina nigromaculata andSaphirella- like copepodid. Abundance of each species was measured in sampling months. The highest density of Poecilostomatoid copepods were recorded in August and October 2010. C. andrewsiwith relative frequency of 73% was dominant species during the studying period among Poecilostomatoida and maximum abundance of it were observed in October 2010. Saphirella- like copepodid was observed in all sampling months. Maximum abundance of this species was in August and October 2010 and this report is the first report of this species in the Persian Gulf. There was Positive significant correlation coefficient between density of C. andrewsi and water salinity (P<0.05) but there was no significant correlation between the rest species and water parameters
