Evaluating Explorations and Demonstrations for Planning in Criminal Justice

Excerpt from the full-text article: This paper has emphasized the importance of evaluative research as an integral component for both explorations and demonstrations, particularly for its contribution to planning in criminal justice. In so doing, an attempt has been made to differentiate the purposes and, consequently, the appropriate research strategies for evaluating these projects. The research of explorations aimed to facilitate the process of conceptualizing and operationalizing innovative services into testable demonstrations. To increase the validity and generalizability of individual demonstration projects, replications in different places under varying conditions are needed. According to Wholey, however, many small studies have been carried out around the country which lack uniformity of design and objectives. Thus, results have been rarely comparable or responsive to the questions facing policy makers (Wholey, 1971: 15). To remedy this situation there would be some merit in following Rivlin\u27s suggestion that funding organizations take the leadership in organizing, funding and evaluating systematic experiments with various ways of implementing programs (Rivlin, 1971: 15). Demonstration projects could then be planned in response to established priorities in the overall process of program development and/or policy-making while allowing for some random innovation

The Demonstration Project as a Research & Change Strategy

The demonstration project is becoming a major instrument for social planning. In sponsoring demonstration projects the overall goal is for small scale pilot programs which include some form of research to contribute to program change and policy-making (14, 16, 19, 21). It is generally expected that the lessons learned from demonstrations, through the rigours of scientific research, will somehow result in large scale adoption and major shifts in aims, styles and resources, and effectiveness of social service programs. Models or prototypes for future operational programs are tested to determine their effectiveness in meeting states objectives. For this reason, they are undertaken in natural settings which presumably resemble the non-experimental conditions in which such programs might be later introduced. This paper will attempt to elaborate the incompatibility between the two primary goals of a demonstration project - evaluating the program and using it as an instrument of change. It will show the manner in which the aim of using the demonstration project as a rational planning instrument is undermined when research and change strategies are pursued simultaneously rather than sequentially. By examining a nationally prominent demonstration - the St. Paul Family Centered Project - we can isolate relevant issues and illustrate how this incompatibility is manifested. Although there is limited generalizability from case studies writings by Marris and Rein (10) as well as Moynihan (11) support the findings of this analysis. The advantage of a detailed examination of a case study is that it provides an empirical and vivid illustration of a phenomenon which appears widespread. Moreover, it yields questions for large-scale research. Therefore, this paper is not meant to describe the history of the Family Centered Project. Rather, this Project provides the empirical data for grappling with the major issues - i.e., the demonstration project as a research and change strategy

Web-Based Integrated Information System Monitoring Data Reports on the Implementation of the DKI Jakarta COVID-19 Vaccination

    Get PDF
CoronaVirus or COVID-19 is a disease that spreads so quickly that it causes people who are infected to get sick and even die. The cause of the rapid spread of this virus is because of the way it is transmitted from one person infected with this virus to others in the vicinity through the air. Given these conditions, the researchers analyzed the design of information technology systems, especially the online system for registration of COVID-19 vaccinations, such as registration of the day of implementation, date of implementation, selection of locations and types of vaccines, and vaccination capacitation, especially in the DKI Jakarta area. People who come to the location of the COVID-19 vaccination, such as health centers, hospitals and other locations that have been determined. This information technology has been developed and has been implemented to help the community, especially the DKI Jakarta area, as a means of registering online for the implementation of vaccinations that are available and listed in a web-based information system. In this study, the first thing to do is to analyze the design of the information system using the Prototype method, which aims to make the system design that is built results in the development of appropriate software, and can help and facilitate the community in carrying out vaccinations, so that the DKI Jakarta government can monitor the implementation before and after vaccination, as well as managing data on people who have or have not received the COVID-19 vaccination as a reference in making decisions and policies of the DKI Jakarta Government. Exploring the Role of Internships in Personal and Professional Development

    Get PDF
Internships serve as an instrumental tool in many sport management students’ trajectory to becoming impactful employees and leaders in the sport industry. The purpose of this sequential mixed-methods study was to cultivate a better understanding of the development that occurs for students as they progress through an internship program, whether it be personal or professional. Internship outcomes related to personal and professional development alike occurred (e.g., personal maturing and growth, networking, and strategic reflection & change of mindset) and had an array of impacts on the outcomes of the study. Notably, contributing to the Experiential Learning Theory, the data outlined that no programmatic structures are in place to strategically build and/or assess students’ personal development; rather, personal development seemed to occur organically for certain participants in this study. Similarly, participants highlighted that soft skills were discussed as important by participants, but not necessarily explicitly addressed in their internship experience. The distinctive context and nature of COVID-19, embedded throughout these findings, provides a unique lens into the necessity of the abstract conceptualization and active experimentation phases of the Experiential Learning Cycle. The findings herein have important practical and theoretical implications for both sport management educators and internship supervisors in sport

Intersection of Art and Criminal Law: The Ethics of True Crime

    Get PDF
True crime reporting has long captivated audiences. By reporting details of an actual crime in a sensationalized way, the genre is often described as “infotainment” – the blending of information and entertainment. The modern genre was likely inaugurated by Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, and gripping accounts of murders and serial killers continue to populate bookshelves. True crime also spills over to primetime television in shows like the Nancy Grace show, with reporting on the Casey Anthony and Amanda Knox cases. But in addition to journalistic and sensational impact, true crime reporting also overlaps with legal investigation of crimes in complicated ways.
