CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN ENGLISH FOOTBALL: HISTORY AND PRESENT

    Get PDF
The purpose of this descriptive research is to present what kind of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities English football clubs are implementing. The paper was designed by approaching the examples of the twenty clubs playing in the 2010-2011 season of the Premier League. A key finding is that football clubs are not only interested in the sporting outcome on the field, but they are also aware of their social status. An implication of this research would be to encourage academics to research more upon the use of CSR in professional sports, as there is a lack of literature regarding this topic. Diminishing the lack was the reason why sport has been chosen as an example, while the reason for selecting English clubs as case studies is backed up by the fact that these organizations have some of the most developed CSR programs in European sport. Limitations of the paper are that it does not offer financial implications of running CSR programs, nor does it trace very deep the implications of the programs on individuals. The originality of the research is provided by the combination between CSR and football, resulting in a topic that few academics have been concerned with researching.community, English football, Football CSR, football management, Premier League, sport business.

The article has the purpose to present the three roles a coach plays at a rugby team: leader, manager and trainer. In his leader role, the coach has to influence the player to follow him on the way of obtaining a common goal, which is, mainly, sporting success. In the analysis of the coach’s leader role, the focus is set on his social relationships with the rugby players and the other human ressources in the rugby club, whereby the presentation of the managerial role focuses on how the coach may use the ressources in the club in order to develop a solid organization, with a powerful administrative basis. Last but not least, the article presents the differences between the training tasks and the managerial and leadership ones. For a better understanding, the principles of governance in rugby – which includes all leadership, management and training - are also presented. According to the governance principles, the coach has to use his leadership, managerial and training roles in order to influence two social groups - the players’ group and the stakeholders’ group.professional sport, rugby coaching, rugby leadership, rugby management, sports management.

Predicting Destinations by Nearest Neighbor Search on Training Vessel Routes

The DEBS Grand Challenge 2018 is set in the context of maritime route prediction. Vessel routes are modeled as streams of Automatic Identification System (AIS) data points selected from real-world tracking data. The challenge requires to correctly estimate the destination ports and arrival times of vessel trips, as early as possible. Our proposed solution partitions the training vessel routes by reported destination port and uses a nearest neighbor search to find the training routes that are closer to the query AIS point. Particular improvements have been included as well, such as a way to avoid changing the predicted ports frequently within one query route and automating the parameters tuning by the use of a genetic algorithm. This leads to significant improvements on the final score

Being an individual sport, tennis often deals with a specific category of sponsoring: the endorsement. Tennis players and business organizations seek each other in order to sign partnerships from which both parties hope to win. Endorsements are among the most profitable income sources for professional athletes. By acting as ambassadors for their sponsors and by cedeing them the image usage rights, tennis players earn a lot. But, through the image association with the athlete, the sponsor also wins, by adding value to his image capital. This papers researches the particularities of tennis endorsements using the case of Roger Federer, one of the best tennis players in history and one of the best business partners in the world of sports for sponsoring companies. Thanks to his succes, Federer reached a level where not less than ten partners sponsor him yearly. The most interesting of these partnerships are presented in this paper

Synthesis and Luminescence Modulation of Pyrazine-Based Gold(III) Pincer Complexes

The first examples of pyrazine-based gold(III) pincer complexes have been synthesized; their intense photoemissions can be modified by interactions with the non-coordinating pyrazine-N atom. Luminescence modulation is possible without the need for altering the ligand framework. Emissions shift from red (77 K) to blue (298 K) due to thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF

From the Totalitarian Language to the Informative Discourse. A Romanian Media Discourse Analysis During the '90s

This study aims at emphasizing the institutional transformations that occurred in the public environment following the events in December 1989 in Romania, focusing on the dismantling of mechanisms that marked the transition from the national-communist propaganda discourse to the informative discourse, which laid the foundation of the public sphere in post-totalitarian Romania. The hypothesis we start from is that Romanian media was slow in abandoning the communist press model, which explains the manichaeist discourse of nowadays media, the involvement of politics in media business and, last but not least, the extremely poor market - the poorest in Eastern Europe, as showed by the latest studies. The analysis has two components: the context analysis (historical, political, ideological) and the media discourse analysis (cf. P. Charaudeau, R. Fowler, John Hartley), in line with the view of certain authors (C. Sparks) with respect to the transitions in Eastern Europe and the role media played in these processes. Also, we permanently referred to the theories of the public sphere explained by J. Habermas. The discourse procedures of the totalitarian language were emphasized by investigating a corpus formed of the main publications of the printed press before and after 1989
