NASA RECON: Course development, administration, and evaluation. A research and development proposal

    Get PDF
This proposal addresses the development, administration, and evaluation of a set of transportable, college-level courses to educate science and engineering students in the effective use of automated scientific and technical information storage and retrieval systems, and, in particular, in the use of the NASA RECON system. Chapter 1 presents a brief introduction. Chapter 2 identifies general and specific objectives, i.e., needs analysis, course development, course administration, and course evaluation. Chapter 3 proposes the methodology to be used in successfully accomplishing these objectives. Chapter 4 highlights expected results and product deliverables, and Chapter 5 presents the project evaluation plan to be followed. Chapter 6 is a brief overview of the institutional resources available at the proposing institutions, i.e., at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and at Southern University to support the project. Chapter 7 proposes a budget, time schedule, and management plan. Chapter 8 is a summary of the foregoing

Transportable, university-level educational programs in interactive information storage and retrieval systems

Pursuant to the specifications of a research contract entered into in December, 1983 with NASA, the Computer Science Departments of the University of Southwestern Louisiana and Southern University will be working jointly to address a variety of research and educational issues relating to the use, by non-computer professionals, of some of the largest and most sophiticated interactive information storage and retrieval systems available. Over the projected 6 to 8 year life of the project, in addition to NASA/RECON, the following systems will be examined: Lockheed DIALOG, DOE/RECON, DOD/DTIC, EPA/CSIN, and LLNL/TIS

Dispositions and Dis/ability in Teacher Education: Teacher Educator Perspectives

This qualitative study explores the connection of dis/ability and dispositions in teacher education. Although dispositions have been part of contemporary teacher education discourse for over thirty years, their continued ambiguity is a source of debate and contestation (e.g., Diez, 2007; Katz & Rath, 1985; Osguthorpe, 2013; Warren, 2018). Existing literature examining dispositions and dis/ability focuses on the dispositions and attitudes teachers have and/or need to teach students with disabilities (e.g., Campbell et. al., 2003; Castello & Boyle, 2013; De Boer et. al., 2011; Killoran et. al., 2014; McCray & McHatton, 2011; Mueller & Hindin, 2011; Taylor & Ringlaben, 2012; Woodcock, 2013; Woolfson & Brady, 2009). This study focuses on how teacher educators employ dispositions in their interactions with disabled teacher candidates. This study used a Comparative Case Study (CCS) framework for the research design that included eight semi-structured interviews with teacher education faculty, document analysis of dispositions artifacts, and autoethnography (Bartlett & Vavrus, 2017). It traces the layers of influence that dispositions assessments have in teacher education. Findings from this study suggest that dis/ability is not considered as an aspect of diversity in teacher education. Teacher educators have varied views on the definition, use, and purpose of dispositions in their programs; however, dispositions illuminate the qualities of the normative teacher, which then is employed to determine who should become a teacher. When teacher candidates’ body-minds do not fit the norm as imagined by their instructors, dispositions are operationalized to cast doubt upon these teacher candidates’ abilities

    Risk Assessment of Mohawk Tannery

    Get PDF
The risk assessment process involves identifying and characterizing hazards, determining dose-response relationships, and assessing possible exposures to toxins in order to inform risk management. The goal of this project was to complete the steps of a risk assessment and develop a perspective on risk management. Data collected from publicly available databases, scholarly articles, and targeted sources were used to perform a risk assessment for Mohawk Tannery. Social, economic, political, and/or legal perspectives were considered when determining the best risk management approaches

    Get PDF
Since the recent growth of country schools and the attention given then today, it is now time to investigate the problems of the rural school conditions and see what improvements can be made on a whole. She purposes of this study are m follows : 1. To acquaint tho readers as far as possible with the status of Negro elementary schools in the western section of Harris County, Texas. 2. To acquaint teacher trainers with rural situation and broaden their views and methods of approach to the problems, 3. To improve the efficiency of the teachers and give tli© state better returns for the money it disburses. Method of Gathering Data This study dealing with Negro School in the western section of Harris County is the result of the author\u27s observation. The author is a teacher in the McGee Chapel School in the western section of Harris County and has lived there for the past few years. To secure data on Negro elementary schools in western Harris County she visited the schools to make observations. she also casually questioned the teachers employed. Extent of Study This study is a story of six negro elementary schools in the western section of Harris County. The schools observed in the county were: Hockley, Fairbanks, Lily White, Rogers, Alief, and McGee Chapel. The first five listed above are one-teacher schools, the latter being a three-teacher schools. Hockley Elementary school. Hockley Elementary school has two rooms and an enrollment of sixty-three children, Fairbanks, one room, twenty-four children; Lily-white, one room, twenty-four children; rogers, one room, twenty- one children; alief, one room, thirty-four children; and McGee chapel, two rooms, seventy-seven children. One teacher at McGee chapel teaches his classes in the church

A NEW MEASURE OF ROTATABILITY OF RESPONSE SURFACE DESIGNS

This paper proposes a new measure of rotatability of a response surface design. It is based on a comparison between the design moments of a given design and the design moments of a rotatable design closest to the given design in the least squares sense. This measure is easier to calculate than KhurÄľs measure. An alternative easier non-geometrical way of deriving Khuri's measure is also presented. Both measures are calculated to illustrate some designs considered by Khuri.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72828/1/j.1467-842X.1996.tb00366.x.pd

The R and D activities addressing the development, administration, and evaluation of a set of transportable, college-level courses to educate science and engineering students in the effective use of automated scientific and technical information storage and retrieval systems, and, in particular, in the use of the NASA RECON system, are discussed. The long-range scope and objectives of these contracted activities are overviewed and the progress which has been made toward these objectives during FY 1983-1984 is highlighted. In addition, the results of a survey of 237 colleges and universities addressing course needs are presented
